UT I hope you were able to sign it. Thanks for the compliment. My ‘proactive spirit’ is is awakened every time I look at my son. This world can be so mean to people who look different or act different. I need my spirit to work a little harder on the days that I may not feel like it. But he deserves it, so I do it.
My husband and I were talking about this possibility just last night. I hope this gets momentum. We both would want to spend out last days in our own home and would like to see everyone enjoy this comfort.

Joan. Thanks. You hit the nail on the head. It takes WAY less money to support a person in their home than it does to “put them in an institution” especially, the way it is currently funded. I believe this is very important. As someone who cared for her Mother at home, our In Home Care Doctor reassurred me that they could treat 300 patients via in home services for every one person that was treated similarily in the hospital. Not everyone is able to do this, but I know in my own familiy’s case it worked out optimally. I always felt I had the support and expertise available to me at all times to give my Mother the best possible care….although she died the day that Hospice was initiated she never suffered, and was always surrounded by loving attention……we knew she felt cared for in the best possible ways.
I also have a handicapped niece that benefits, as we do as well, from services that allow her to be cared for at home and through supportive networks and programs. We must value people over profits……if we are to be truly a civilized society, and if as human beings we are to optimize our greatest human potential..to love and be loved.
I’m waiting to confirm the account I set up, but you can count on my signature to this petition. I’ll also pass it on.

Alright Chica and all of you who live in TODville!!!.
I am not a crier. Really, I’m not. There just seems to be a bit of dust in the air. My contacts have been acting up lately. And I inherited long eyelashes from my father. Plus, I’m seasoning some chicken for tomorrow and I decided to cut an onion for some extra flavor. So, I am not crying. Really, I’m not.
Thank each and every one of you who signs and passes it on to family and friends. I am humbled that you, who I have never met in person, would care about my son and I, and those of us with family members and friends who were born with or acquired disabilities.
We fight everyday, and sometimes we forget that there really are people out there who care. So thank you, thank you and thank you. From the bottom of my heart.
Always know that there are people out there who care. This is why we are democrats, we care about community. We care about one another. I will pass this on again. I have friends who would benefit from this too.

I don’t have twitter (must get my Goddaughter to show me how!!) but I have emailed all my family and friends in the US.
Isonprize, people like you are true heroes looking after those with disabilities, bless you and your precious son. My parents cared for my aged grandmother who lived with us when I was a kid and I still believe she lived years longer because of their love and care. They are older now and need more help which I try to give them. My husband is disabled and I try to follow the example my parent’s showed me and look after him at home. It IS tough at times emotionally, physically and financially BUT it is so worth it when you can see the person you love more than life it’s self gain benefit from the care they receive at home. Riches, career status and material possessions just pale into insignificance when someone you love needs care.
Thank you isonprize and everyone else who cares, you are angels and are an inspiration. God bless you all. Love you all.
What I meant to add was that it is imperative to have the funding there through medicaid (or as with the UK the NHS/disability benefits) to enable carers to carry out their work and to have the relevant support to do so.

I’ve always known Professor Melissa Harris-Perry was quite amazing and knowledgeable on a broad range of historical, governmental, and political facts but watching her give a lecture and Q&A session on C-SPAN ONE about Race Relations and American Politics is just splendid. It’s captivating and broadens the mind. She’s on C-SPAN one right now and I’d recommend this lecture series conducted at Chautauqua, New York to everyone. It’s quite fascinating. History laid bare for all to witness.

20% of Americans have a disability. That’s 1 in 5 people who need some kind of help (sometimes a lot, sometimes just a little) . We are supposed to care for folks who may not be able to care for themselves.

So Netanyahu comes to the white house earlier this year and proceeds to disrespect President Obama, then goes to the congress and blast President Obama once again and receives thunderous applause. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago in New York, and Netanyahu wants to be President Obama’s Bundini Brown. Unfortunately for Netanyahu he learned a lesson that President Obama has taught to many. President Obama gave Netanyahu just enough rope to hang himself, Netanyahu thought that he could simply satisfy the hard liners and his problems would suddenly disappear. He misjudged the real meaning of the Arab Spring, which was the youth; the youth in Israel want to live in peace. They also recognize that the Palestinians should have their own land.
Netanyahu can’t get to the negotiation table quick enough these days; this is evident by wanting to negotiate without pre-conditions, which he has in the past disagreed with. Maybe Netanyahu had his come to Jesus moment when he looked out his window and saw an ocean of Israeli youth wanting to live as good neighbors alongside Palestine. Or maybe President Obama helped Netanyahu see the writing on the wall, only Netanyahu knows for sure.

We are doing much of this already in the State of Oregon. We have a waiver to use Medicaid funding for home based care instead of nursing care for Medicaid eligible disabled and elderly. So there are model programs in existence that are working and saving money.
Bill R. That’s great!! We are trying to get models like those nationally!! I hope you signed the petition. There are still states that send folks with special needs into expensive institutions when the same amount of money could support many, many more people in their own communities.
