‘Post-Roe underground’ helps women in abortion ban states access abortion pills

The use of abortion pills has grown as a percentage of abortions in the United States since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, particularly in states that have enacted extreme restrictions on abortion access. Increasingly those pills are being obtained outside of the medical system, including through a network that delivers supplies over the border from Mexico. Paulo Ramos reports.

No One Is Above the Law, Except, Apparently, Donald Trump

….”Almost any other defendant would have to face the consequences of coming to court empty-handed. It was in a criminal case, yes, but Kalief Browder — arrested at 16 for an alleged robbery — spent three years at Rikers, without trial, because his family could not afford a $3,000 bond. Not Trump. On Monday, the day the money was due, a New York appeals court said that it would accept a far smaller bond of $175 million, a significant and unexpected victory for the former president. He has 10 days to pay.

Consequences for Trump? Ah! Well. Nevertheless.”

Cheney urges court to hold Jan. 6 trial before election: ‘He knows how damaging that will be

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said it was critical that former President Trump’s federal election interference case goes to trial before voters select their next president in November as she called on the Supreme Court to recognize Trump’s appeal as a delay tactic.

“It cannot be the case that a president of the United States can attempt to overturn an election and seize power and that our justice system is incapable of holding a trial, of holding him to account, before the next election,” Cheney said at a Wednesday event at Drake University in Iowa. “That cannot be the case.”

Massive defeat for anti-trans & anti-LGBTQ+ riders in spending bill

      More than 40 were defeated

By Erin Reed | On Thursday, Congress unveiled the much-anticipated spending bill to avert a government shutdown. The bill, which includes funding for major government departments such as Health and Human Services and Education, featured fierce negotiations over conservative “policy riders.”

These policy riders included bans on coverage for gender-affirming care, DEI bans, sports bans, and more. Despite some indications that Democrats might compromise due to the sheer number of conservative policy riders, it appears those fears did not come to fruition. Democrats held firm in negotiations, and the most impactful anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ riders were nowhere to be found.

One policy rider proposed for the Food and Drug Administration would have defunded any hospital that “distributes, sells, or otherwise uses drugs that disrupt the onset of puberty or sexual development for those under 18,” a measure targeting not only transgender youth but also those experiencing precocious puberty.

How Justice Thomas’s ‘Nearly Adopted Daughter’ Became His Law Clerk

Justice Clarence Thomas gave Crystal Clanton a home and a job after she left a conservative youth organization in controversy. Then the justice picked her for one of the most coveted positions in the legal world.

The email went out to members of Justice Clarence Thomas’s law clerk network late last month celebrating his newest addition to an exclusive club. The justice’s selection needed no introduction.

“Crystal Clanton’s clerkship for OT ’24 was announced by Scalia Law today!” wrote an assistant to Virginia Thomas, the justice’s wife, who is known as Ginni. The email referred to the 2024 October term of the court, and the tone was jubilant: “Please take a look at these posts of congratulations and support. Consider reposting, replying or adding your own!”

The Thomases and Ms. Clanton, a 29-year-old conservative organizer turned lawyer, have built such a close relationship that the couple informally refer to her as their “nearly adopted daughter.” Ms. Clanton, who was previously accused of sending racist text messages, including one that read “I HATE BLACK PEOPLE,” has lived in the Thomas home, assisted Ms. Thomas in her political consulting business and joined her in a “girls trip” to New York.

In 2019, at the Thomases’ urging, Ms. Clanton enrolled at Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University in Virginia, where Justice Thomas has taught. She received a full merit scholarship, according to another judge who later hired her.

Statement from President Joe Biden on the Wrongful Detention of Evan Gershkovich

Today we mark a painful anniversary: one year of American journalist Evan Gershkovich’s wrongful detention in Russia.

Journalism is not a crime, and Evan went to Russia to do his job as a reporter —risking his safety to shine the light of truth on Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine. Shortly after his wholly unjust and illegal detention, he drafted a letter to his family from prison, writing: “I am not losing hope.”

As I have told Evan’s parents, I will never give up hope either. We will continue working every day to secure his release. We will continue to denounce and impose costs for Russia’s appalling attempts to use Americans as bargaining chips. And we will continue to stand strong against all those who seek to attack the press or target journalists—the pillars of free society.

To Evan, to Paul Whelan, and to all Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad: We are with you. And we will never stop working to bring you home.

The Supreme Court Is Shaming Itself

No good legal reason exists to delay Donald Trump’s January 6 trial any further.

“Donald Trump is determined to avoid accountability before the general election, and, so far, the U.S. Supreme Court is helping him.Trump has no legal ground whatsoever to delay a ruling in his plea for presidential immunity. The reason Trump has nevertheless sought to slow down the immunity appeals process is obvious: to postpone the trial date, hopefully pushing it into a time when, as president, he would control the Department of Justice and thus could quash the prosecution altogether. The Supreme Court has shamed itself by being a party to this, when the sole issue before the Court is presidential immunity. By contrast, Special Counsel Jack Smith has both law and policy on his side in seeking a prompt determination on immunity and a speedy trial soon thereafter. Yet the Court has ignored all that.”

    Lily Gladstone goes home

The award-winning Siksikaitsitapii and Nimíipuu actress celebrated by the Blackfoot Confederacy during Lily Gladstone Day on the Blackfeet Reservation, honored by being given a stand-up headdress

    by Kolby Kickingwoman

BROWNING, Mont. — “It really is a full circle moment, it feels amazing,” said Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone.

The pride of the Blackfoot Confederacy, Gladstone, who is Siksikaitsitapii and Nimíipuu, returned home to the Blackfeet Reservation March 26 for a day of celebration in her name.
The Blackfoot Confederacy consists of the Kainai-Blood Tribe, Siksika, Peigan-Piikani and Aamskapi Pikuni, and the territory stretches from half of Saskatchewan and Alberta to the northern part of Montana.
More than a thousand people from around the country and even from Canada showed up to the newly remodeled All Event Center in Browning, Montana, to celebrate and see Piiṫǎak̇ii (Eagle Woman), be honored and receive a stand-up headdress.
The day was filled with honor songs, speeches, lilis, and warhoops for the actress and her historic Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award wins, as well as being the first Native American to be nominated for an Academy Award for best actress for her role as Mollie Burkhart in “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
There was a palpable buzz in the air as tribal leaders, North American Indian Days powwow royalty, school board members, students, community members, and more joined Gladstone for a grand entry to kick off the event.
Blackfeet tribal business council member Everett Armstrong welcomed Gladstone home, thanking her for her representation of the tribe and for being an inspiration to Native youth.
“Thank you for showcasing our precious gift of our language on the world stage, in front of millions and millions people across the world. Thank you for everything that you’re doing, for following your dreams,” Armstrong said. “Because of you, rez kids on every reservation in the United States and Canada, are now inspired. They’re inspired to chase their dreams, inspired that dreams come true. They’re inspired that everything and anything is possible.”

      Headdresses are earned:
The headdress transfer was done by elder Charlene Plume Prairie Chicken, Kainai-Blood Tribe, a member of the Women’s Stand-Up Headdress Society who also made the headdress for Gladstone.“Lily, it’s such an honor for me to make your headdress and also to transfer it to you,”
Plume said. “Due to you being from the Blackfoot Confederacy, it’s such an honor.”Noting the significance and honor of receiving a headdress, Siksika Chief Ouray Crowfoot said headdresses are not just given away but are earned. The Women’s Stand-Up Headdress Society has been around for centuries, said Theda New Breast, Blackfeet, who is a member of the society. The society is a group of Blackfoot women who have been transferred the rights to wear and own headdresses. She added Plume Prairie Chicken is the only Blackfoot woman who makes stand-up headdresses because it’s supposed to be a woman that makes it for women.

In a Step Forward for Asian American Studies, Amherst Adds a Major

Karen Lee spent a recent Friday afternoon hanging around, on pins and needles, outside of the red-carpeted assembly room in Amherst College’s stately Converse Hall. When Lee heard the cheer go up behind the double doors, she knew the major had passed.

    History of the White House

    Easter Egg Roll

The original site of the Easter Monday Egg Roll was the grounds of the United States Capitol. By the mid 1870s, the egg rolling activities on the West Terraces had gained notoriety as the children turned the Capitol grounds into their Easter Monday playground. The first egg rolls, largely family affairs, seem to have been held during the administration of President Andrew Johnson. Youngsters of the President’s family dyed eggs on Sunday for the Monday rolling, which the First Lady would watch from the South Portico. A family member has attested to hearing the stories of such activity from Andrew Johnson Patterson, the President’s grandson, who lived at the White House while his mother served as White House hostess on behalf of her invalid mother, First Lady Eliza Johnson. Although small groups of egg rollers were reported on the White House grounds under the presidency of General Ulysses S. Grant, the majority of egg rolling activity and all day picnics took place at the Capitol. The workers and tourists watched in fascination as the children rolled both their hard boiled eggs and themselves down the lush green hills.

California fast-food workers are now making $20 an hour. Other businesses might have to catch up

…Starting Monday, fast-food workers in California at chains with more than 60 national locations earn $20 an hour, higher than the state’s broader minimum wage of $16 per hour. The new pay floor stems from a state law passed in September, which also establishes a nine-person council that will determine future wage hikes and suggest other guidelines for labor conditions for the industry. There are more than half a million fast-food workers in the state, Gov. Gavin Newsom said when signing the bill into law.

Florida Court Allows 6-Week Abortion Ban, but Voters Will Get to Weigh In

The Florida Supreme Court found that the State Constitution’s privacy protections do not extend to abortion. But it also allowed a ballot question on whether to expand abortion access.

…But in a separate decision released at the same time, the justices allowed Florida voters to decide this fall whether to expand abortion access. The court ruled 4 to 3 that a proposed constitutional amendment that would guarantee the right to abortion “before viability,” usually around 24 weeks, could go on the November ballot.

Chef José Andrés – early this morning.

      But now…

“Unforgivable”: José Andrés’ NGO says 7 aid workers killed in Gaza strike

Seven aid workers from chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip on Monday, the NGO said in a statement.

The big picture: Andrés’ organization has been leading the efforts to get food to Gaza by sea, and has delivered tons of supplies to the enclave via a ship from Cyprus over the past few weeks.

World Central Kitchen said it was pausing its operations in the area after the attack, and the Israeli military said it has “been reviewing the incident at the highest levels.”

Andrés’ group said the seven killed were from Australia, Poland, the U.K. and Palestine. One was a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron confirmed in a post on X Tuesday that three British citizens were among those killed, calling their deaths “completely unacceptable.”

Dear José and World Central Kitchen family,

        the shock is palpable,

        such a catastrophe.

imho you cannot ‘thread the needle’ with this kind of leader
who can rationalize the killing of thousands and all of the horror.
And with no end in sight.
He has extracted his several tons of flesh
and now Netanyahu must use finally his words = just words.
Aid workers do what they do on trust.
          Trust is everything, everything,
and the time for denial is long over.
          Stop the pretense!
Stop the bombing – two wrongs don’t make a right.

After nearly six months of war, hostages’ families join with anti-government rallies

‘We will not meet here again,’ says father of abductee at Tel Aviv’s Hostages’ Square rally; tens of thousands at protests across Israel; over a dozen arrested in clashes with police

Tens of thousands of people turned out for mass protests across Israel on Saturday night, and the weekly demonstrations in Tel Aviv by the hostages’ families took a dramatic turn after speakers called on attendees to “take to the streets” and join the anti-government protesters in the heart of the city, announcing an apparent discontinuation of the separate gathering.

Eli Albag, father of Hamas-held hostage Liri Albag, said there would be no more separate protests at Hostages Square in front of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

“This is the last Shabbat that we will be here,” he said. “We won’t meet here anymore, we will be in the streets… this is the moment where we turn off the lights.”

    José Andrés: Let People Eat

In the worst conditions you can imagine — after hurricanes, earthquakes, bombs and gunfire — the best of humanity shows up. Not once or twice but always.

The seven people killed on a World Central Kitchen mission in Gaza on Monday were the best of humanity. They are not faceless or nameless. They are not generic aid workers or collateral damage in war.

Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, John Chapman, Jacob Flickinger, Zomi Frankcom, James Henderson, James Kirby and Damian Sobol risked everything for the most fundamentally human activity: to share our food with others.

These are people I Moreserved alongside in Ukraine, Turkey, Morocco, the Bahamas, Indonesia, Mexico, Gaza and Israel. They were far more than heroes.

Their work was based on the simple belief that food is a universal human right. It is not conditional on being good or bad, rich or poor, left or right. We do not ask what religion you belong to. We just ask how many meals you need.

From Day 1, we have fed Israelis as well as Palestinians. Across Israel, we have served more than 1.75 million hot meals. We have fed families displaced by Hezbollah rockets in the north. We have fed grieving families from the south. We delivered meals to the hospitals where hostages were reunited with their families. We have called consistently, repeatedly and passionately for the release of all the hostages.
