‘failed missives to the almighty’

Texas Governor Rick Perry prays during “The Response,” an event billed as a call to prayer for a nation in crisis, at Reliant stadium in Houston August 6

BurntOrangeReport: The biggest gathering in Houston yesterday should tell America all it needs to know about Rick Perry. I’m not talking about the estimated 30,000 individuals who visited Reliant Stadium yesterday for The Response, a event endorsed by religious extremists and known hate-mongers.

I’m talking about the 100,000 Texans who waited in line for free school supplies, immunizations, fresh produce, and school uniforms….

While our three-term governor was busy self-promoting to evangelical Christians in preparation to announce his bid for President, the actual people he governs were attempting to mitigate the damage he’s done to regular working Texas families just trying to get by. While Perry’s faithful lined up to break their fast with hot dogs and nachos, his constituents stood in the 90+ degree heat for bags of fruit and vegetables.

… Where are the gasping media reports of over 100,000 Texans waiting in the hot sun for school supplies and food? Where are the statistics about how Texas has some of the highest rates nationally of poverty and food insecurity in all of the breathless coverage of Rick Perry’s ‘Texas Miracle’? Where was the caravan of reporters from news outlets across America, interviewing the victims, rather than the worshipers, of the Perry administration? I suppose it’s nice that The Response had an almost four-fold increase in turnout for a day of prayer over the expected 8,000, but it’s horrifying that a charitable event for families of Texas schoolchildren should also see such a tremendous increase in turnout.

After all, needy families are about as common in Texas as failed missives to the Almighty are at Reliant Stadium.

Am I crazy and naive to wish that those 30,000 in attendance at Reliant had spent their time yesterday actually clothing the poor, feeding the hungry, or visiting the sick, rather than just praying for the free market to fix it for them?

Because while Rick Perry was ministering to the flock at the football stadium, it sure looks like a whole lot more of the “least of these brothers and sisters” were waiting in line for school supplies yesterday, not waiting in line to sway and pray…..

this is absolutely disgusting. I don’t know what kind of God this ass thinks he serves, but it’s obviously not the kind, good, benevolent one.

I too absolutely do not recognize the God these people claim to worship…

A God that in their opinion endorses wickedness, hate, bigotry, selfishness, divisiveness, greed, evil…

I do not know that God…

Hell, I hope Perry runs in the primary and wins it. I don’t know what’s taking him so long to enter, I guess maybe until after the Ames stray poll. If he’s not in by mid August, he’s not running and all of this was nothing more to stroke his ego. Basically by this time next week we should know one way or the other as Ames is next Saturday and Perry could use it’s result as a jump off point assuming nobody runs away with it (and nobody should as Pawlenty is really pushing for a win, but Bachmann is the more traditional Ames type. Romney will still get his votes in the poll even if he’s not making any effort there. Perry could make the case that he’s the combination of all – he could unite the party bases around him like no others can. He can get the evangelicals, the teabaggers, the corporatists etc.

He’d be an absolute gift to President Obama and the Dems in 2012 and even be a gift for Dems in 2016 as Perry being the GOP nominee in 2012 would hurt Jeb Bush in 2016.

Rove is desperately trying to convince Perry not to run because he’s doom for the party. He’d shrink the map for the GOP, he’s less competitive across the board, but will not play well in the northeast, midwest or Nevada.

Perfect gift is right. The video visuals of his 30,000 praying at Reliant Stadium while 90,000 plus stood in the hot sun waiting for food and school supplies as a result of his policies is a perfect DNC ad!

Which is why I wish LOD and the rest would wait until after Perry announces and starts campaigning and raking in the money. If Perry doesn’t run I think Romney is a lock to be the candidate and he polls much stronger and puts states in play that simply aren’t with any other candidate. Perry gets in now and it’s basically a seven month sprint to the GOP nomination.

As a sane Texan and a college student who has suffered heavily under this ass-hats draconian cuts to education; I hope he rots in hell.

bless you UT. I’m so sorry for you and can only commiserate. In terms of the latter part of your statement, he will. Even if I didn’t believe in the guy upstairs, I certainly believe in Karma and that bitch is bad.

I stand with you utaustin. the man is a pig and a fraud. Take government money, and then bitch about money coming from the federal government. It is hard for me to believe he will be anything but a loser.

What an abuse of religion. And why can’t the attendees see this truth, that they’re being used and abused? Why are they so blind? This fiasco is so disturbing to me, everything about it is disgusting, this purposeful inter-mingling of politics and religion and the truth and reality and facts that were ignored in the process. Perry led those faithful astray, contributed to their ignorance, held them back.

If Perry gets in, he’ll play for keeps. There will be no hedging for a potential VP slot because Texas Governor is seen as a better gig than VP to a guy with his ego.

I bet he chickens out though. Because he doesn’t want to risk losing.

Here is a great and honest report of this event, all the shame and hypocrisy, from the El Paso Times:

First of all, he looks constipated, not in deep thoughts, and I’m very distracted by his tie.

Shame on the media for not reporting about the 100,000 Texans who were waiting in line. Not a surprise though.

I really really like Frank Shaeffer, I learned a lot about the ”religious” right from reading his articles. Scary stuff!

If someone is an expert, it’s him! They are so dangerous.

It seems like it was created in 2008..and renewed again 2010…
I question the timing of why it’s been circulating in Tweeterland today…That’s how I got of hold of it..or I wouldn’t have never known existed….That tells me in how the propaganda machine is working…and spreading.

is it wrong that every time I look at this fool I laugh? The fact that even GW thinks this tool is an idiot just makes him all the more ridiculous to me. However, the disgusting things he’s done to the people of Texas is no laughing matter. This guy is seriously sick.

What a waste of time to say you are gathered in prayer when you must first repent of your sins and turn away from your evil desires, thoughts, and actions. That was the appearance of a prayer service, many are deceived. Our heavenly Father is a loving God who hears and answer prayers of the righteous. Those people who were providing food for the less fortunate and giving school supplies were doing the work of a loving God. It bothers me that politicians are always looking for the Christian support when their personal lives are void of Godly principles.

Gov. Perry needs to listen to Rev. Al’s comments on his program tonight. Perry does not respect the God that I read about in scripture. If that is the God he is referring to in this fake meeting. This is not a God who would cut billions from the education of children and college students. This is not a God who would allow the ugly comments about another brother or sister to go unrepented of. If you have something against another person, you go to that person and ask for forgiveness of that wrong and then also ask God to forgive you. You dod not allow children to suffer when you have been given the blessings of being in a powerful position to help them out of it. I see no compassion in one inch of this man’s smallest finger. I feel deeply about people uses God to support their power playing game with peoples lives. Where is the patience, the compassion, the being your brother’s and sister’s keeper. I just can’t square these peoples actions with the very words of the Lord that they feel that they have the best seat in the meeting to. They will have a great seat in hell accoring to the Bible that most Christians read. “Depart from me, I never knew you.”, said the Lord. Right? Shame on these hypocrites.
