First Lady visits Decatur House

First Lady Michelle Obama is surrounded by schoolchildren from Willow Springs Elementary School in Fairfax, Va., after they performed part of a play at the Decatur House, a National Trust for Historic Preservation Site and home to the David M. Rubenstein National Center for White House History, in Washington, May 22. The events were part of an announcement of a major philanthropic effort to preserve the Decatur House

Washington Post: Michelle Obama visited the slave quarters at Decatur House — a red-brick structure that sits in the shadow of the White House — that once housed the black men and women who served 19th century politicians, military and business leaders who lived in the property. The first lady, who is the nation’s only first lady to have descended from people held in slavery, made the stop as part of an announcement that the historic Decatur House, which is located 150 yards from the White House, would receive a $1 million grant from American Express to preserve the house and accompanying slave quarters.

The First Lady:

“….. For nearly 200 years, as our country has grown and evolved, the Decatur House has grown and evolved right along with it.  This house has hosted parties and social events with some of our nation’s foremost leaders. It’s been a residence for secretaries of state, and at one time, it served as headquarters for the Army Subsistence Department of the Civil War.

But from the back of the house, from a structure far less lavish, comes even more history — the kinds of stories that too often get lost, the kinds of stories that are a part of so many of our families’ histories, including my own.  I’m talking about the slaves here at Decatur House who spent their lives within shouting distance of one of the most powerful buildings on the planet — a bastion of freedom and justice for all.

Yet, within this very place, about 20 men and women spent their days serving those who came and went from this house and their nights jammed together on the second floor of the slave quarters, all the while holding onto a quiet hope, a quiet prayer that they, too, and perhaps their children, would someday be free.  These stories of toil, and sweat, and quiet, unrelenting dignity — these stories are as vital to our national memory as any other.  And so it is our responsibility as a nation to ensure that these stories are told.”

LH, poor Bernanke, he’s talking to people who don’t know what smart is and couldn’t tell economic policy from a bologna sandwich. Honestly, it’s like asking a chicken coop full of hens to get smarter. Good luck with that, Ben.

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Eric Holder says four American citizens have been killed in drone strikes since 2009.

The attorney general said that in conducting U.S. counterterrorism operations against al-Qaida and its associated forces, the government has targeted and killed one American citizen, Anwar al-Awlaki.

In a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, Holder says the U.S. is also aware of three other American citizens who have been killed in such counterterrorism operations over the same time period.

    Today’s Presidential daily tracking/
Gallup is + 6 approval rating
    Rasmussen is -7

That’s 13 point difference. Both right leaning polls.

    Any questions?

Two of the same polls which had Mitt Romney tied or ahead in last year election. That is all I need to know.

Hey Meta. When I read your post in SF, it was to late. I caught up on all of the threads when I returned home and I saw your invite. I sure hate that I missed it. It would have been nice to see you. Maybe the next time. We drove up to see my daughter who was attending her high school reunion. I love how FLOTUS repeats wearing her clothing. She has worn this dress several times.

Good Early Evening….I am so excited to watch the Gershwin thingy tonight…..What more could a woman want than PBO, MO, JT, CK……..I don’t have time to go back and read so, in a nutshell, tell me your thoughts about this woman who took the 5th today…..Not being able to really be in it like I did when the other man testified, I just have to say……something just doesn’t smell right to me……Isn’t this woman a Bush appointee or is she civil servant career?……..Isn’t she the one who spilled the beans in the first place?…..Is there any way that this could be some scheme dreamed up to discredit PBO’s administration and ultimately get to ACA?…..just asking…………and finally before I change into my mumu and bedroom shoes and relax to some good music, I just have to say, I’m surprised that Oklahoma politicians are even letting PBO go to OK….

    Repaid. 9 YEARS EARLY!

    http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_23300602/tesla-motors-fully-repays-465-million-federal-loan

PALO ALTO — In a huge boost for the Obama Administration and clean-energy firms, electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors (TSLA) announced Wednesday that it has paid back its $465 million government loan in full and nine years early.
The Department of Energy oversees $34 billion in taxpayer-funded loans for clean energy and other projects, but Tesla is the only United States car company in the vast portfolio of 33 projects to pay back its loan so far. The loan program faced fierce partisan fire in the wake of the high-profile 2011 bankruptcy of Fremont solar manufacturer Solyndra, and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney called Tesla a “loser” in a presidential debate last fall.

“Tesla employs more than 3,000 American workers and is living proof of the power of American innovation,” U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said in a statement. “This is another important contribution to what the Obama Administration has done to preserve and promote America’s auto industry. This announcement is also good news for the future of America’s growing electric vehicle industry. While the market has taken longer than predicted to get going, sales of electric vehicles in the U.S. tripled last year and are continuing to increase rapidly in 2013. Tesla and other manufacturers are in a strong position for this growing global market.”

I saw one of these cars at Trader Joe’s last night! Beautiful!!!

Legislating is an imperfect art, but it is the art of the possible. Instead of screaming and moaning about how those who are fighting for us and with us “caved,” we need to fight those that forced the stripping of immigration equality from immigration reform. Lashing out at Sens. Leahy, Schumer, Feinstein and Durbin may make some of the reactionaries feel good, but it will not help advance the cause of equality even one single step. Demanding rigidity from your allies instead of targeting the real enemies of our cause is the surest way to lose effectiveness…

My Life 😉 Favorite Billy Joel’s song. I had all his albums at one time. I went to see him. Something went wrong. I stopped that day liking Billy Joel for they made me walk back 6-7 blocks to put away my Camera. I have Never bought any more albums or CDs.

My Life……I still love this song.
