On Memorial Day, We Remember ‘Some Gave All’

For this Memorial Day, President Joe Biden released a proclamation on Friday that said:
“Since our Nation’s founding, members of our Armed Forces have been willing to lay down their lives — not for a person or a place but for an idea unlike any other in human history: the idea of the United States of America…Generations of America’s beloved daughters and sons have dared all, risked all, and given all for this idea. Today, as they lie in eternal peace, we continue to live by the light of liberty they kept burning bright.”

Next Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Indian Citizenship Act,
often referred to as the Snyder Act. I have been reflecting on how many Native Americans served and died in the U.S. Armed Forces even before they were made citizens. Native Americans making their contributions and sacrifices in the U.S. Armed Forces date back to the Revolutionary War.

During World War I, more than 12,500 Native Americans served in the U.S. Armed Forces. These Natives fought for freedom when they weren’t yet citizens of the country.
True to their reputation as warriors, almost two-thirds of the Native Americans served in the infantry. They won widespread praise for their bravery, achievement and sacrifice. Nearly 5% of these warriors died—the ultimate sacrifice—compared to 1% of American infantry soldiers overall.

On Memorial Day weekend, I often think of Spc. Lori Piestewa, a Hopi tribal citizen,
and a warrior in her own right. Piestewa was the first Native American woman to die in combat while serving in the U.S. military and also the first woman in the entire U.S. military killed in the Iraq War.
Deployed from Fort Bliss in Texas, she had only been in Iraq for five weeks. Piestwea was only 23 years old when she gave her life for this country and her community. She left behind two young children.
For several years, Terry Piestewa, Lori’s father and a Vietnam veteran, wore a baseball cap that read: “All give some, some gave all.”
In the first years after Lori’s death, tribal communities across Indian Country celebrated her life and death. At first, her family found the memorials in her honor difficult. As time passed, the family found the memorials and tributes to Lori beneficial.
“Now that it’s been going on a while, it’s been helping us to heal,” her father said. “And it helps our grandchildren to know their mother, because when you’re that young, you don’t know your parents when they leave. Through what is happening to us, our grandchildren are getting to know their mother quite well. They know that there are a lot of people out there still thinking about their mother.”

U.S. Lawmakers Visit Taiwan and Vow Support in Face of Chinese Military Drills

A bipartisan delegation promised to stand by the island’s newly elected president, Lai Ching-te, after Beijing surrounded the self-governing island with naval vessels and aircraft.

After China performed two days of military drills intended to punish Taiwan, Representative Michael McCaul of Texas on Monday stood alongside the island nation’s newly elected president, Lai Ching-te, and issued a promise.

“The United States must maintain the capacity to resist any resort to force or coercion that would jeopardize the security of the people of Taiwan,” Mr. McCaul, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said. “That is what we stand for, and that is what we continue to say.”

The Biden administration has receipts on the fourth anniversary of the horrific police murder.

The Biden Campaign is marking the the annual Memorial Day holiday in part by placing a spotlight on the myriad ways in which former President Donald Trump not only failed George Floyd – whose police murder occurred four years ago on Saturday – but also Black people in the U.S.

Suni Lee will compete in the all-around at U.S. Championships

Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee will compete in the all-around at the U.S. Championships. It is the first time she will compete in an all-around since being diagnosed with kidney disease in early 2023.

Lee submitted a petition to compete in the all-around at the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. According to Olympics.com, the petition was recently approved.

The championships are another step forward in Lee’s journey to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. The reigning Olympic all-around gold medalist is hoping for a chance to join the team and potentially defend her title.

Her performance at the upcoming championships will determine whether or not she can compete at the Olympic Trials in June, Essentially Sports reports. This year, the trials are being held in Minneapolis, just miles from where Lee grew up.

The women’s competition at the U.S. Championships will begin on Friday, May 31.

Israel’s war on Gaza live news: Rafah hospital closes due to Israeli bombs

The Kuwaiti Hospital, one of Rafah’s two remaining hospitals, has been shut down due to Israeli attacks, its director said in a statement. This comes after two hospital medical staff were killed earlier by Israeli shelling.

Israeli forces have bombed a tent camp housing displaced people in a designated safe zone in Rafah, killing 45 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The attack has triggered an international outcry, leading to calls for a ceasefire.

NASA Launches Small Climate Satellite to Study Earth’s Poles

The first of a pair of climate satellites designed to study heat emissions at Earth’s poles for NASA is in orbit after lifting off atop Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket from the company’s Launch Complex 1 in Māhia, New Zealand at 7:41 p.m. NZST (3:41 a.m. EDT) on Saturday.

The agency’s PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-InfraRed Experiment) mission consists of two shoebox-size cube satellites, or CubeSats, that will measure the amount of heat Earth radiates into space from two of the coldest, most remote regions on the planet. Data from the PREFIRE mission will help researchers better predict how Earth’s ice, seas, and weather will change in a warming world.

      Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro said Trump “could eventually destroy the world” during a press conference across the road from the court in lower Manhattan. De Niro, a frequent Trump antagonist, called the former president a “coward and a clown”, who did not belong in New York.

“We New Yorkers used to tolerate him when he was just another grubby real estate hustler masquerading as a big shot, a two-bit playboy lying his way into the tabloids,” De Niro, a surrogate for the Biden campaign, said. “But this city is pretty accommodating, we make room for clowns. We have them all over the city, people who do crazy things in the street, we tolerate it as part of the culture.”

De Niro continued that “Trump wants to destroy not only the city, but the country and eventually he could destroy the world”.

FACT SHEET: Biden-Harris Administration Takes Action to Expand Access to Capital for Small- and Medium-Sized Climate Businesses

Through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. is making the largest public investment in climate action in history. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, the largest-ever investment in climate action, introduced and expanded grants, loans, tax incentives, and other programs to accelerate clean energy deployment, invest in resilience, and seed breakthrough innovative technologies. Combined with unprecedented executive action, these investments are setting the United States on a path to achieve President Biden’s ambitious climate goals — including cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050. President Biden’s historic economic policies have spurred unprecedented levels of private investment into America’s clean energy economy. Since the start of the Biden-Harris Administration, the private sector has announced $866 billion in new investments in clean energy and manufacturing.

‘Are you with me?’ Biden and Harris launch Black voter outreach and warn of a second Trump term

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — President Joe Biden renewed his election-year pitch to Black voters on Wednesday, lashing out at Donald Trump’s “MAGA lies” and saying the winner of this year’s White House race will make crucial decisions, including on nominees for the Supreme Court, that could affect the country for decades.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, in a joint appearance at a Philadelphia boarding school, thanked Black voters in Pennsylvania and beyond for being the lynchpin to their 2020 victory and they made the case that their agenda has had an enormous impact on improving lives for Black voters.

The Democratic president also argued that an “unhinged” Trump is peddling misinformation in an effort to win back the White House.

“I’ll be damned if I’m going to let Donald Trump turn America into a place of anger, resentment and hate,” Biden said, calling on the crowd to help him and Harris win a second term. “My question is a simple one: Are you with me?”

The design showed an image of Clinton drinking from a mug alongside the words “Turns out she was right about everything.”

The picture was emblazoned on a mug.

    imo for decades now,
small talk makes my dedicated science academic friend anxious and she is slow to respond.

Quietly told me about seeing a “UFO, a silver disk” out of the window, flying much faster than the plane she was returning home in last week. It passed by a little distance away.
–I saw the brightness in her eye at the memory, an unexpected opening and shift.

As for trump the twisted reptilian school bully:
Q: Do you think after 34 felon convictions, that he will have any change in perspective?

Have told many many life stories on here over the years, this being a risky one about change in perspective.

My close friend mentioned here has spent a lifetime knee deep in peer reviews and research data, just the facts.

—For me of course the whole thing is a first.

Michelle Obama’s mom has passed away. My heart and thoughts go out to the family. The news literally took my breath away. 😥

Today, President Biden outlined a new proposal – submitted by Israel – that is a roadmap to an enduring ceasefire and the release of all the hostages.

Statement from President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden on the Passing of Mrs. Marian Robinson

We knew Mrs. Marian Robinson as a devoted mother and grandmother with a fierce and unconditional love of her family. With the blessing of friendship, we felt that love ourselves – with every quiet smile or warm embrace she shared with us.

She believed, like we do, that family is the beginning, middle and end.  She moved into the White House to be there for her family when they needed her the most, and in so doing, she served her country right alongside them. Her life is a reminder that we are a great nation because we are a good people.

The entire Biden family sends its deepest love to Michelle, Craig, Barack, Kelly, and the six irrepressible grandchildren whom she helped to raise and so loved, and in whom her kind and gentle spirit lives on.

May she rest in peace with her beloved Fraser.

May God bless Mrs. Marian Robinson.
