Good Friday Morning Chipsticks, Africa, AMK…TOD Early Birds!!!

Finally starting to thaw out around here. Temps supposed to get up to the 50’s and 60’s this weekend; virtually a heatwave. 🙂

Keeping GoBrookly, NCLB, Tnmtngirl in my thoughts and prayers. Also prayers for the health and well-being of all of those who frequent the TOD village.

Everyone have a good start to their weekend.

The fallout from “Bridgegate” is going to be huge and we can believe that Christie will not be going down alone.

My husband was telling me that one of TRMS this week talked about the corruption in New Jersey/New York government and politics. While we look at what’s going on in disbelief, many who live in those states just see it as business as usual.

But it’s still illegal, even if it’s ‘normal’. Hey, I live in Chicago. Let’s be clear: Rod Blagojevich is serving a 14 year sentence for a whole lot less than what Christie is involved in. And Christie’s crimes are deeply, offensively immoral: punishing his constiuents because some official didn’t bend to his will; playing with Sandy relief funds as his personal slush fund. Deeply, offensively immoral.

As the President continues to outmaneuver GOP obstruction via Executive Orders and direct outreach to businesses and organizations, it will be somewhat entertaining to watch the resulting panic, havoc, and other reckless reactions by the GOP/TP/MSM.

It was his effing headline, yet he can’t resist giving gop some prop. ObamaCare crafted over a year of wrangling vs a plan written on a napkin just a day for sotu are one and same thing.

Good morning Chips and everyone else awake. I am so glad to be back, but I had a great time at MIL’s 94th birthday celebration and looking after an adorable, but very active, 16-month old grandbaby for a day and night. You all seem to have done a terrific job taking care of and cherishing our president and I can’t wait to catch up on everything. I missed the daily connection with PBO and missed all of you.

Welcome back Jackie – pleased to hear the trip was a great success – with grandbabes & birthday parties involved – a most likely outcome 🙂 I assume the weather didn’t cause too much havoc.

Thanks, 99ts, and, no, the weather was okay, cold, but not icy. The only negative outcome, aside from horrendous traffic problems getting home, was exhaustion. This morning I kept thinking of Chip’s favorite toon of the man lying on his back on the floor.

Did I miss something? Was the comment tweeted by the MSNBC staffer really a firing offense? The piece that I saw just seemed like a general statement alluding to the intolerance of conservatives. Was there a personal attack, use of vulgar language, or something else that I didn’t see?

It said Right wing. And we know what the right wing does.

        January 31, 2014 at 8:46 am

You missed the gnashing of teeth by the republican who was offended – and thus the firing. No-one at MSNBC is allowed to offend republicans. They can insult and lie about all and any democrats (MJ every day) – that gains a rise.

        • January 31, 2014 at 9:06 am

“You missed the gnashing of teeth by the republican who was offended…”

Then I didn’t miss anything. Their faux outrage is the daily norm. Unfortunately, scapegoats and collateral damage are also par for the course…typically the negative impact being felt by those they deem to be non-essential/irrelevant.

            January 31, 2014 at 9:10 am

I have never known anything like the whining that comes from some republicans when they are called out with the truth. They get so offended – which is probably why the instant reactions on the right are to go to war someplace.

Sad gun news in Chgo—again. Much loved asst. bball coach at Marshall H.S. was driving his teen age daughter to school yesterday and had the misfortune of having to stop at a stoplight. 2 gunmen pulled up alongside and sprayed the passenger side with bullets. Coach laid on top of daughter to protect her but he suffered multiple shots, including in the spine, is in critical condition, expected to survive but has no feeling in his legs. The coach played on the Marshall team featured in the documentary, “Hoop Dreams”.

Dotser, the tragedy never, ever ends. Some days, It feels as if our whole society is heading off a cliff. The shooters probably went on their way never to be caught or punished. It think of this stuff all the time now. When we were snarled in traffic for hours last night, I kept wondering what nutjob was going to direct his rage into shooting people. It’s a terrifying way to live.

Good morning TOD. I caught Rachel’s late-night rerun and the opening segment could have been done by one of us.
Rachel was jubilant about the SOTU and POTUS’s obvious great mood.
She mentioned how relaxed and jokey (Dotster cited this, too) PBO was. How he is clearly enjoying himself.
F–k Robert Gibbs and Co. talking about PBO’s “wasted year, etc.”

The meat and potatoes part of the “Why is the President so happy?” was delivered by Celinda Lake a democratic pollster who talked about the effect minimum wage discussions have on elections. Democrats along with huge percentages of Americans favor raising the minimum wage. Americans support that view with their votes.
Ms. Lake cited Claire McCaskills Senate victory in 2006 and a number of others.

    Seems pretty clear to me.
Talk about Obamacare enrollment. Up up and up.
Work hard on raising the minimum wage. In every state, city, area of the country.
Solve problems at the voting booth.

    2014 WINNING!!

From your lips to God’s ears, Vicki. I think the president’s upbeat SOTU affected everyone listening to it, aside from those willfully without ears to hear or eyes to see. I gleaned bits and pieces of conversation in the last few days and people seem to have picked up on the optimistic beat of the speech. This is good news. People feel good and they think things ARE good, which actually makes them good in the end.

I saw it too Vicki – watch the republicans start to pick up on agreeing with issues such as raising the min wage, health care and UI – suddenly they are not looking so good at the polls in November.

The actions of Gibbs since he left the WH lead me believe PBO fired his ass. He is very bitter.

In all four matchups with the GOP candidates, Nunn currently holds at least a small lead. Rep. Paul Broun comes closest, as Nunn is only ahead by one point. Against Rep. Jack Kingston, she holds a two-point advantage. Nunn is ahead by four points against both Rep. Phil Gingrey and former Secretary of State Karen Handel. With women voters, she is ahead anywhere between four and eight points against the GOP candidates.

This is all pretty amazing considering that Nunn has never held public office. This could speak to a variety of different things. One, she does have a well-known name in Georgia. While she may be something of an unknown commodity to most of the voters in Georgia, her father is very well-known. Sam Nunn is a former Democratic U.S. Senator from Georgia who made friends on both sides of the aisle during his tenure. Therefore, Michelle Nunn has picked up some valuable endorsements and donations from prominent Republicans like John Warner and Dick Lugar.

Another thing this might speak to is the rejection of extreme right-wing candidates. The three sitting Congressmen that are vying for the GOP nomination are all extremely conservative, almost cartoonishly so. Broun, for instance, is noted for saying evolution and the Big Bang Theory are ‘lies straight from the pit of hell’ and that it is a fact that the Earth is 9,000 years old. Kingston, meanwhile, wants poor kids to sweep the halls of their school if they want to eat. Not to be outdone, Gingrey defended both Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock regarding their statements on rape and abortion.

I’m furious about this bill, and the Dems were complicit. We got nothing, and GOP got damn near everything they wanted. The farm subsidies went UP.
