compare, contrast … you just can’t buy class

New York Times (July, 2009):  …when the library for George W. Bush opens in 2013 on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, visitors will most likely get to see one of his most treasured items: Saddam Hussein’s pistol.

The gun was found in the spider hole where the Iraqi leader was captured in December 2003 by Delta Force soldiers, four of whom later presented the pistol to Mr. Bush. Among the thousands of gifts Mr. Bush received as president, the gun became a favorite….

….For nearly five years, Mr. Bush kept the mounted, glass-encased pistol in the Oval Office or a study, showing it with pride, especially to military officials….

Mr. Bush also [kept] a brick from the Iraq safe house where the Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed by an American air strike in 2006.

…Douglas Brinkley, an author and history professor at Rice University, said the pistol opened a psychological window into Mr. Bush’s view of his presidency. “It represents this Texas notion of the white hats taking out the black hats and keeping the trophy,” Mr. Brinkley said. “It’s a True West magazine kind of pulp western mentality….”

birthers & their photoshopping skills….

Media Matters: Jack Cashill, author of the charmingly insane book Deconstructing Obama, claims to have unearthed yet another shocking bombshell about Barack Obama’s past. According to Cashill’s WorldNetDaily column this morning, this photo of young Barack Obama and his grandparents in New York is a forgery into which Obama has been photoshopped:

Cashill writes: “The bench is real. The grandparents are real. The wall behind them is real. Barack Obama is not. He has been conspicuously photoshopped in. Who did this and why remains as much a mystery as Obama’s extended stay in New York.” He embeds a YouTube video that claims to have uncovered the “real” photo, seen below, in which Obama is nowhere to be seen:

Actually, to say Obama is “nowhere to be seen” isn’t quite accurate, given that the young future president’s right knee is still somehow visible in the “real” photo:

So yeah: Jack Cashill is a clownish buffoon. Be sure to tell that to the hosts of Fox & Friends the next time they have him on national television. Also, drop a line to Andrew Breitbart, who is quite enamored of Cashill’s “convincing work.”

Yep, that’s the new Huffy Post recruit.

This is pure gold ‘LOL’, thank you!

Loved this:

Alex Pareene (Salon): So, yes, this is actually just a picture of Barack Obama’s grandparents hanging out in New York, where they did not live and where Obama was attending college, without their grandson, who was I guess secretly in Pakistan, at the time. I think that’s what has been definitively proven here. Obama was being a Marxist Muslim in Pakistan.

But unmentioned by Cashill is the single most insidious part of this deception: While Barack Obama is nowhere to be found in the unretouched version of this photo, his knee is still in between in grandparents.

What was Barack Obama’s knee doing in New York, while the rest of him was in Pakistan, and Indonesia? Dealing drugs? Why are mainstream journalists afraid to ask tough questions about the president’s detachable knee? The people have a right to know!

the president’s picture perfect

President Barack Obama blocks a shot while playing basketball with personal aide Reggie Love at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York, Sept. 23, 2009. (Official White House photo by Pete Souza)

Souza showed Obama a picture on the back of his camera from a friendly one-on-one game Obama played with presidential aide (and former Duke basketball player) Reggie Love. Obama, who was talking trash during the game, is seen leaping up to block a shot, looking great. Souza said when the president saw the photo, he told him, “I order you to make this a jumbo.” Before it was posted, the president had Love sign the print with a note complimenting the president on his block.

fox noise: “gazillions queue for palin’s dallas book signing!”

Salon: When the Mama Grizzly hit the Dallas area in 2009, crowds lined up to see her. This time around, it was a non-event.

I showed up about midday to talk with the Barnes & Noble store director, to see if I could get access as a photographer … basically, she said no, I couldn’t be in the store and take photos while Palin was there.

…. her reality television people were there filming the event. TLC managed to get Barnes & Noble to restrict other media access during the signing. The local news outlets could not videotape during the actual signing of the books; there were to be no print journalists allowed and no questions could be asked of Palin while she was in the store.

… Another big difference for this most recent bookstore appearance by Palin is that there seemed to be much less interest in her latest book, and perhaps in her.

Here’s the waiting line for patrons to get their books signed while Palin was in the store on Sunday:

Compare that with the line waiting outside in 20°F weather at the previous Palin event a full six hours before the doors opened (many waited in line for 14 hours) as seen here in December 2009:

At both Dallas-area events, there was a common theme. The people waiting to see her were devoted and enthusiastic followers, and almost all of them were a homogeneous demographic — there were very few people of color, which made that contrast stand out all the more.

One last note: At the Legacy Bookstore signing in 2009, Palin signed about 1,300 books. At the Barnes & Noble store, they set aside about 250 books for her to sign.

It was a non-event.

😐

Jeez, not even her North Korean allies turned up

Reduced from $25.99 to $12.99, but still only 22nd in Amazon’s bestseller list …. one ahead of ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book’. Aw.

picture perfect: no 25

by Callie Shell: “This picture went – what’s the word? – viral. It was everywhere. And of course when the cost of Sarah Palin’s wardrobe came out, a lot was made of it. The funny thing was that I was in the holding room and one of his advisers left. I was thinking, ‘What on earth am I going to take a picture of? Another photo of him in a holding room?’ And then he put his feet up and I thought, ‘Ah!’. Afterwards, when we were about to go on stage, he said to me, ‘You liked my shoes, didn’t you?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ And he said, ‘You know, they’ve already been resoled once since I started campaigning but I’m not giving them up. Reggie [his PA] is dying to get hold of them but I’m not giving them up. I like them.'” Providence, R.I., 3/1/2008.
