Katie Van Syckle: Larry David Says Obama’s Golf Game Is Very Presidential

One of his favorite golf partners over the years has been President Obama. The pair have been spotted on Martha’s Vineyard, where David has a house and where the Obama family takes their annual August vacation. According to David, Obama’s golfing style is just what you’d expect: very chill. “He doesn’t cheat at all, he loves golf, he’s a cool customer on the golf course,” David told Vulture last night at the premiere of season nine of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. “You can learn a lot about a person when you play golf with them.”

****

“Like when you play golf with me, you can see what a baby I am,” David continued. “How unfit I would be to be president. But when you play with him, you say, ‘Oh yeah, that guy, I’m glad he’s president.’ He hits a terrible shot, and he just goes, ‘Oh, hey, too bad.’ And then moves on. He’s very good at handling adversity which is what you need in that office. I’m not. I freak out.”

USA Today: Obama to speak on 5th anniversary of financial crisis

President Obama will deliver a speech Monday on the fifth anniversary of the event that helped elect him back in 2008: The financial crisis. Obama “will be joined on-stage and in the audience by people that have benefited from his economic recovery proposals over the last five years,” the White House said in a statement, “including small business owners, construction workers, homeowners, consumers and tax cut recipients.”

Obama will use the speech to kick off a week of events devoted to the economy and budget issues.

…. A Tuesday interview on the Spanish language television network Telemundo gives Obama a chance to talk about another major domestic issue, immigration. Budget issues are likely to dominate a Wednesday speech to the Business Roundtable. And Obama is likely to emphasize the auto bailout when he travels Friday to a Ford plant in the Kansas City area.

Your Morning Must-Read:

The People’s View: Ezra Klein’s Concern Trolling on Obama and the Federal Reserve

As soon as news hit the wires that Larry Summers has withdrawn his name from consideration for chair of the Federal Reserve, the media went on a full-spin mode, likely embarrassed that just Friday, they were pimping a Japanese newspaper report trumpeting Summers as the chosen one. Ezra Klein, who’d been part of the media build-up toward that ‘inevitability,’ if along with his opposition to it.

This is where a little Obama Derangement Syndrome seeped in. Ezra, along with his peers in the beltway media – dude, get out a little from you Post office and the MSNBC studios; it’ll do you some good – wasn’t just convinced that Summers would be a bad choice, but that Obama would pick him just to take pleasure in some hippie-punching, i.e. just to piss off establishment media liberals like Klein.

TPM: Biden: ‘The Tail Is Wagging The Dog’ In Today’s GOP

Vice President Joe Biden warned donors and activists of a fundamental shift in the Republican party at an Iowa fundraiser Sunday, calling today’s GOP a “different breed of cat” and taking a shot at the leadership of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

“This is not your father’s Republican Party,” he told a crowd just before Sen. Tom Harkin’s (D) annual steak fry, according to a pool report. “We’re dealing with a different breed of cat as my uncle used to say. These guys aren’t bad. I’m not making moral judgments, but they have a fundamentally different view of America than we do – a fundamentally different view.”

Bob Cesca: The Goalpost for Success Was the Disarmament of Syria’s WMD, So the U.S. Won an Historic Victory

Saturday marked an historic event future generations will read about in books. Over the weekend, Russia and the United States reached an accord over the question of the Syrian government’s stockpiles of chemical weapons, most recently used against civilians late last month.

Whether the United States “won” depends entirely upon your definition of victory. Personally, I define victory in terms of the stated goal of the administration’s actions of the past three weeks: to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons to prevent another attack on Syrian civilians.

Michael Tomasky: The Right’s Sickening Syria Spin

If Obama persuaded Assad to step down and move to Siberia, the critics would still find something to whine about. Michael Tomasky deflates the arguments against the new arms deal.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not very interested in being lectured that Bashar al-Assad has no real intention of giving up his chemical weapons by the very same people who a decade ago were pushing this country into war — and having the deranged gall to call the rest of us unpatriotic — on the argument that there was no possible way a monster like Saddam Hussein had given up his chemical weapons. Barack Obama has been forced to spend about 70 percent of his presidential energies trying to repair crises foreign and domestic that these people created, and forced to do so against their iron opposition on all fronts; and now that he’s achieved a diplomatic breakthrough, they have the audacity to argue that he sold America out to Vladimir Putin? It’s staggering and sickening.

Steve Benen: The right struggles to hide its disappointment with diplomatic progress

A couple of years ago, after the United States and its allies used military force to help remove the Gadhafi’s government from Libya, Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham issued one of my favorite Republican press releases ever. The two senators, who had eagerly spent months touting U.S. military action in Libya, issued a joint statement commending the “British, French, and other allies, as well as our Arab partners, especially Qatar and the UAE.”

McCain and Graham eventually said Americans can be “proud of the role our country” played, but they nevertheless condemned the Obama administration’s “failure” to act in Libya the way the GOP senators preferred.

It was striking at the time for its bitterness – the United States had achieved its strategic goals, but instead of celebrating or applauding Obama’s success, Republicans pouted and whined.

It’s funny how history sometimes repeats itself….

Science Insider: U.S. Science Laureate Bill Hits Roadblock

Climate science skeptics have derailed a congressional proposal to create the honorary position of U.S. science laureate. But proponents haven’t abandoned the idea of giving someone a national platform to foster public understanding of science and serve as a role model.

….. the U.S. House of Representatives was expected to give swift approval to a bill introduced this spring by a bipartisan coalition of legislators in both the House and the Senate….

The bill was never discussed in any committee, however, and Larry Hart of the American Conservative Union hit the roof when he saw it on the House calendar for the next day. In a letter to other conservative organizations and every House member, Hart said the bill would give President Barack Obama the opportunity to appoint someone “who will share his view that science should serve political ends, on such issues as climate change and regulation of greenhouse gases.”….

Smartypants: A Both/And Leader in an Either/Or World

For the record, I don’t think President Obama has any magical powers, or that he plays 11th dimensional chess, or that he bluffs, or that he’s merely lucky. What I do think is that he develops his North Star, takes the long view, and enters negotiations from the standpoint of finding both/and solutions (partnerships) rather than engage in the power games of either/or (dominance).

piers morgan: obnoxious amoral rupert murdoch-worshiping turd.

Three Rupert Murdoch stooges: Piers Morgan with Rebekah Brooks (disgraced former editor of The News of the World) and Andy Coulson (disgraced former editor of the News of the World and recently arrested former communications director for Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron)

Daily Beast: Members of Parliament are calling on the CNN host to return to the U.K. and disclose what he knew about phone hacking at his former paper, the Mirror.

…. Piers Morgan is certain to face official questioning in the U.K. about alleged phone hacking at the Daily Mirror while he was editor.

He will be required to answer claims by a former Mirror journalist, James Hipwell, and by Paul McCartney’s ex-wife, Heather Mills, that Mirror group reporters illegally accessed mobile-phone voicemails in the same manner that prompted the closure last month of Rupert Murdoch’s London Sunday tabloid, News of the World. But his questioners will have bigger, more general suspicions in mind as well.

… Morgan was editor of the Daily Mirror from 1995 to 2004 …. The new allegations leave him on the defensive, but other, more circumstantial evidence has long raised serious suspicions about what went on at the Mirror.

… Morgan is not known as a pillar of journalistic ethics. In 2000, while editor of the Mirror, he was censured by the Press Complaints Commission for his share-buying activities …. And in 2004 he was sacked after publishing photographs of British soldiers abusing Iraqis that turned out to be fake:

At the time, he was criticized for failing to make appropriate checks; later he would mount the curious argument that publication had been justified because later evidence showed that some British soldiers, in different circumstances, did abuse Iraqis.

… The allegations of the past few days make close scrutiny of Morgan’s record a certainty. James Hipwell, a former financial journalist who was jailed in 2004 in the same scandal over share dealings for which Morgan was criticized, told the Independent newspaper that hacking was common at the Mirror. Heather Mills described on BBC television a conversation with a senior Mirror Group reporter, at the time that Morgan edited the Mirror, in which the reporter admitted listening to her voicemails.

If Morgan is not already in close consultation with his British lawyers, he will be very soon.

Full post here

AP (July 20): After remaining on the sidelines of Britain’s phone hacking scandal, Piers Morgan was finally drawn into it, defending himself and his former boss Rupert Murdoch.

While Murdoch testified in London before Parliament, Morgan took to Twitter.

A former editor of the News of the World the CNN host has largely declined to address the scandal on his CNN nightly prime-time show, but he tweeted frequently in support of Murdoch throughout Tuesday’s inquiry.

….Morgan has backed Murdoch during the scandal. He said he was a “big admirer of” Murdoch and he would not “join in the kind of witch hunt that’s been going on”.

While following Tuesday’s hearing, he wrote: “Strong finish by Rupert. Love him or hate him, does anyone genuinely think he’s a crook or condoned crime? Because I don’t.”

From the comments I got a chance to read today, I saw that a lot of you were down about the renewed attacks on the President from the professional left.

Just a couple of things:

The vast majority of the professional left didn’t campaign or vote for Barack Obama in 2008 – this is the simple truth, as any of you who visited the better known liberal (ha!) sites would have seen in 2007/08. These people’s hatred for BHO was a sight to behold – even before he took office. I witnessed it myself time and time again – that’s why I started this blog, to get away from these ****ed up hate-mongers.

But he got elected without them, and he will get elected without them again in 2012.

Check all the recent polls – his support from genuine progressives usually tops 80 per cent. The professional left are in a tiny minority, they just make a lot of noise. They are irrelevant, just a bunch of self-promoting, bitter keyboard warriors with seriously troubled agendas.

Always remember, so many of the professional left divas – like Arianna Huffington and Cenk Uygur – were hardcore right-wingers until not too long ago. Miraculous conversions that had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that they found it easier to forge media careers as ‘progressives’. And then there’s the PL’s beloved Glenn Greenwald, his hatred of the President leaving the chap foaming at the mouth as he pounds his keyboard and spews his daily bile. This, incidentally, the guy who’s still pushing the candidacy of Republican/Libertarian Gary Johnson – the racist scumbag who wants to end child labor laws. How progressive of you, Glenn 🙄

These people aren’t progressives, they’re attention-seeking opportunists who haven’t a genuine liberal bone in their bodies. Uygur, the self-appointed voice of the Professional Left, and self-confessed Ronald Reagan devotee, is the guy who sneered at the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, describing equal pay for women as a “minor” achievement by the President (see here).

See?

These people are just not worth your energy or worry – they are nothing, they represent no one but themselves, a tiny hate-filled clique whose biggest fear is progress. **** them, preserve your energy and passion for getting President Obama re-elected 😉

****

2008 ….. “Them”

Do you think she voted for President Obama in 2008? Me neither. And she probably won’t vote for him either in 2012.

Net loss? Zero.

back on the bike

USA Today: It’s been a week and a day since the amazing sight of Presidents Obama and Bill Clinton in the White House press briefing room, with Obama quickly leaving Clinton alone to take questions from the press.

Clinton now says it was Obama’s spur-of-the-moment idea, part of the plan to sell the tax cut extension package that wound up passing this week.

“It was actually quite impromptu,” Clinton told CNN’s Larry King this week. “I was in the Oval Office talking to the president (Obama) about a number of things at his invitation. And he asked me what I thought about this tax compromise. And essentially I said the same thing as Bob Greenstein, the tax expert. I said I think it’s the best deal you can get at this time.

I said, ‘would you like me to call some Democrats in the House?’ He (Obama) said, ‘no, I want you to go to the briefing room and tell the press.’ I said, ‘well, I’m out of practice.’ He said, ‘you’ll be fine. It’s like riding a bicycle.’ So he dragged me in there and the rest is history.” Clinton did allow that, “it was sort of fun — but I think once every ten years is quite enough.”
