Reuters: Obama to extend wage law to cover two million home care aides

The Obama administration said on Tuesday it will extend the protection of U.S. minimum wage and overtime law to almost 2 million home health workers who assist the elderly and disabled.

Home health aides, personal care aides and certified nursing assistants will be brought under the coverage of the Fair Labor Standards Act, effective in January 2015, the U.S. Department of Labor said in a statement.

“Today we are taking an important step toward guaranteeing that these professionals receive the wage protections they deserve while protecting the right of individuals to live at home,” said Thomas Perez, who was sworn in on September 4 as President Barack Obama’s new labor secretary.

she’s so, um, presidential

Boston Herald: “The American people have had enough. They’ve had it up to here,” a fiery Michele Bachmann told a crowd of roughly 250 gathered in a back yard in Raymond, N.H….New Hampshire is the second stop on her three state announcement tour…..

…… Bachmann even unloaded a risque revelation about her and her husband’s first dates, saying that they would visit the elderly in nursing homes. When the audience chuckled, she added “Well I didn’t tell you what we did afterwards … we do, you know, have red blood in us. What can I say?”

Realizing she may have revealed too much, she joked, “the kids won’t appreciate that mom said that.”

flashback … “i’m not going to the back anymore”

Thank you Sue in Minnesota 😉

Virginia Shelton, 105, of Ashland, a retired nurse, was surprised to learn that she would not be going to a senior center today. Instead, she is among the guests attending the president’s appearance at a South Richmond recreation association.

Shelton turned 105 on Sept. 8. She said that on her birthday she received a “wonderful” letter from First Lady Michelle Obama.

Shelton believes the mayor of Ashland arranged for her invitation to Obama’s event … Asked what advice she might have for Obama, Shelton said: “As long as he tells the truth, keeps looking up and keeps Christ in his life,” he will be fine. “Take the JC pill and you’ll get to 105,” she said.
