KTUU: Former President Obama Stops In Anchorage On His Way Home From Family Vacation

An Anchorage resident had a brief meeting with the 44th United States president on July 3, as he returned to America following a family vacation in Asia. Jolene Jackinsky entered Signature Air Service at around 7:20 a.m. on Monday. She says she had entered the business looking for Iliamna Air, and told her baby that they would be going “bye bye” soon.

At this point, Jackinsky said, former President Barack Obama, sitting in a chair in the middle of the room, remarked to her, asking, “Who is this pretty girl?” Jackinsky said Obama then approached the two and asked to hold her baby and spoke with her briefly. “He asked what our names were and where we were going. He talked about how fast they grow up and that he’s got a girl who’s going to college,” Jackinsky said. “When her dad walked in, Obama was still holding our baby and [Obama] said, ‘Hey, I’m taking your baby!'”

Secretary of State John Kerry suggested on Thursday that the United States would play a greater role in alleviating the increasingly high-profile Syrian refugee crisis, which the United Nations believes to be the worst refugee dilemma in 25 years. “We could do a lot more to protect those people,” Kerry told The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein. Speaking from the State Department, Kerry acknowledged that while America has donated over $4 billion in humanitarian assistance to help Syrians, the situation in their war-ravaged country and in neighboring states remains dire for millions. Kerry did not suggest that the U.S. should be taking in more refugees. Rather, he indicated that any increased American effort would focus on working with existing refugee camps in other countries.

The President’s Day In Alaska

Screen Shot 2015-09-01 at 8.21.53 PM

Markers throughout Exit Glacier show how much it’s receded over time. The impacts of climate change are real, and the people of Alaska are living with them every day. It’s never been more important for us to work together to address this challenge. -bo

Alaska Dispatch News: Day 2 Live Blog: President Obama In Alaska

The president discussed the baked contents of the display case with an employee, saying at one point: “I’ll take all of those,” and pointing to a batch of cinnamon rolls.  Then he turned to the crowd in the restaurant behind him and began shaking hands. He signed a copy of an Obama book held by 3-year-old Elliott Adams.  “He’s been carrying a book about Obama around since he got here,” said Elliott’s mother, Ash Adams.  Obama also took a moment to take photos with restaurant staff.
