President Obama on Wednesday announced a plan to allow college graduates to cap federal student loan repayments at 10 percent of discretionary income starting in January, two years before the cap was due to take effect under federal law.
The accelerated âpay as you earnâ program, which Obama will authorize through executive order, could benefit up to 1.6 million borrowers and reduce their payments by as much as a couple hundred dollars a month, administration officials said. All remaining debt on the federal loans would be forgiven after 20 years – five years earlier than under current law.
Reuters: âŠ. President Obama’s appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” lifted the show to its highest Tuesday-night ratings since March 2, 2010, the night after Leno returned to the show.
Tuesday’s episode received a 4.1/11 metered-market household rating, a 52 percent leap over his Tuesday-night average so far this season. With Obama’s appearance,” The Tonight Show” handily surpassed “Late Show with David Letterman,” which posted a 2.7/7 household rating, “Nightline,” which drew a 3.6/9, and “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” which received a 1.8./6.
Thanks Proud

Ruth Marcus (Washington Post): In an interview with Parade magazine, the Texas governor declared Obamaâs place of birth a âdistractiveâ issue even as he happily latched on to the opportunity to distract âŠ.. It was classic Perry, combining logical incoherence and a smarmy cheap shot.
âŠ. Is this a presidential campaign or a middle-school playground? Iâll show you mine if you show me yours? By the way, if I had Perryâs grades, I wouldnât be mentioning them. Certainly not if I were running against a former president of the Harvard Law Review.
âŠ. You might think this was the candidate cannily trying to have it both ways: a nod to the birther crazies with a simultaneous wink at those who know this is a ridiculous distraction. Except that Perry managed to step on his real message of the day: his unaffordable and unfair proposal to âsimplifyâ the tax code – by grafting a flat-tax alternative onto the existing system.
âŠ. The matter of Obamaâs birth certificate should be a closed case. It is astonishing that a sitting governor, no less a serious candidate for president, would stoop to playing this game.
⊠The country is facing serious problems. This will be a fateful election. Voters deserve better than scare tactics and drivel.

I was thrilled to receive an email from Lisa, the mother of that beautiful little boy, Tyren Scott, tonight:
“The question that Bill O’Reilly asked: ‘Why do so many people hate you?” Well, my son asked that question at 10 years old, but in a loving way. My son’s question was: “Why do people hate you when they should love you – GOD IS LOVE.”
As I told Tyren’s mother, “When I watched the interview with O’Reilly and heard him ask that ‘hate’ question I genuinely, truthfully thought of your little boy – and how he asked the President a similar question, but, as you put it, in a loving way. O’Reilly asked it in a spiteful, vicious way, like it was the President’s ‘fault’ for provoking such feelings from people who, frankly, hate him largely because of the color of his skin. The contrast between your boy and O’Reilly was just stunning.”
Tyren’s Mom’s next email: “Tyren received letters at his school from people all over the nation. Look at how our President talked to my son like they were the only ones in the room. President Obama is a caring man.”
Lisa sent me photos of her son with the President – can’t thank her enough.
The Grio: …The Grio assembled a group of 25 contemporary academics, artists and activists to assess the most impactful African-American leaders in U.S. history.
…Each member of the expert panel was asked to complete a survey, which asked them to assess 170 black leaders. These leaders are individuals who worked in times as distant as American slavery and moments as recent as our own. The experts made independent rankings of each leader on the list….
…President Barack Obama is the only living leader included among the Top 10. He is ranked a very close second to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This result is nothing short of extraordinary given that President Obama is a relatively young leader who only became known to a national American audience in the past four years…. His presence among these giants of black political history is indicative of the symbolic and substantive importance of his presidency despite his often-embattled administration.
There are four women among the Top 10. While Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks are women who are widely known and whose accomplishments are taught in American grade schools, both Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Ella Baker are less well-known figures for many black Americans…
1. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2. Barack Obama 3. W.E.B. Du Bois 4. Thurgood Marshall 5. Malcolm X 6. Frederick Douglass 7. Harriet Tubman 8. Rosa Parks 9. Ida B. Wells-Barnett10. Ella Baker
