I love this! But am so concerned that our babies might not make it to middle school, high school, college, graduating, or that right of adulthood — getting that joyous job. If we don’t do everything about guns & the sickness surrounding that stupidity of equating 2nd amendment & military grade guns. For goodness sake, there has been a people will for change. Yet I keep hearing “lack of political will”! WTH is that?

How fitting it is that the Exonerated Five, formerly the Central Park Five, get to watch the Manhattan justice system descend upon the MAGA movement’s main man.

Karma is a … well, you know the rest.

Does this text format look familiar to you? It should. It’s roughly the same format Donald Trump used in a 1989 newspaper ad calling for the return of the death penalty in the state of New York after five innocent Black and Latino teenagers were falsely accused of a vicious attack in New York’s Central Park. The teenagers — all of whom served hard prison time for a crime they didn’t commit — are men now and are known collectively as the Exonerated Five.

“A classic mystery plot, in which a cop or a detective solves a crime, follows a time-tested pattern, much as most blues music follows a distinctive 12 bar pattern (“Twelve Bar Mystery”). A “bar” here is a measure of time with a specific number of beats. For dance music: 4 beats to the bar.” (Ron Liebman)

    Senator Fetterman

Sen. Fetterman urged people who are suffering with depression to get help, “I am so happy to be home. I’m excited to be the father and husband I want to be, and the senator Pennsylvania deserves. Pennsylvanians have always had my back, and I will always have theirs. I am extremely grateful to the incredible team at Walter Reed. The care they provided changed my life. I will have more to say about this soon, but for now I want everyone to know that depression is treatable, and treatment works. This isn’t about politics — right now there are people who are suffering with depression in red counties and blue counties. If you need help, please get help.”

A federal judge put a hold on the law hours before it was to take effect, saying there were legitimate questions about whether it violated the First Amendment.

Who’s Using Vocal Fry in the Ocean? Dolphins and Whaaaaales.

“Dolphins, pilot whales and sperm whales use echolocation clicks to hunt and subdue their prey. But the animals, known as toothed whales, also produce other sounds for social communication, like grunts and high-pitched whistles. For decades, scientists speculated that something in the nasal cavity was responsible for this range of sounds, but the mechanics were unclear.

Now, researchers have uncovered how structures in the nose, called phonic lips, allow toothed whales to produce sounds at different registers, similar to the way the human voice functions, all while conserving air deep beneath the ocean’s surface. And the animals use the vocal fry register for echolocation. Yes, that vocal fryyyy.”

Toothed whales use distinct vocal registers for echolocation and communication

      Secrets of whale vocal anatomy

Odontocete (“toothed”) whales are well known for using echolocation to forage underwater, but they also produce a wide array of sounds used for social communication. Precisely how all of these sounds are produced was characterized by Madsen et al. in living animals (see the Perspective by Ravignani and Herbst). The authors found that the wide array of sounds are produced through the nasal passages but in a way analogous to laryngeal and syringeal sound production. Using the nasal passages facilitates complex sound production at depth, where laryngeal sound would be hampered by pressure. Furthermore, they found that odontocetes use different vocal registers, such as those we associate with falsetto or vocal fry in humans, to convey information. —SNV
