Yes we are failing our children. This is my home state. Born and raised here. College here. Moved away for 30+ years and returned to retire here. I love the beauty of this state…….the mountains are breathtaking and are “home” to me and my family. While I was growing up and until 2011, this was mostly a Democratic state except for northeast TN. In fact, heavily Democratic. Lamar Alexander was governor 1979-1987, but had a Democratic majority in our General Assembly. Dem governor from ’87-95 w/Dem General Assembly. Republican governor ’95-’03, still with a Dem majority GA. Phil Bredesen, D ’03-11 with a Dem majority GA. In 2011, billionaire Bill Haslam was elected governor and finally had a majority in both the House and Senate. It has remained that way since and each year, because of extreme gerrymandering, the majority has grown. Bill Lee is by far the worst governor this state has had in my almost 76 years and maybe ever. Ray Blanton, D, was governor from ’75-’79. His was a scandal ridden administration, but it was HIS scandal. He wasn’t passing laws and doing things that harmed the citizens and took our state back 50 years. I would have to go back and fact check myself, but I don’t think there has been one week out of the last 5 or 6 (at least) that we haven’t been in the news. It is absolutely maddening. And, to top everything off, the stupid hick Tim Burchett is my congressman. It might just be the safest seat in the entire Congress. Hunky dorey, right? Gag me now.

Vice President Kamala Harris at Cape Coast Castle:
So, being here was — was immensely powerful and moving, when we think about how human beings were treated by the hundreds of thousands in this very place that we now stand, the crimes that happened here, the blood that was shed here.
There are dungeons here where human beings were kept — men, women, and children. They were kidnapped from their homes. They were transported hundreds of miles from their homes, not really sure where they were headed. And they came to this place of horror — some to die, many to starve and be tortured, women to be raped — before they were then forcibly taken on a journey thousands of miles from their home to be sold by so-called merchants and taken to the Americas, to the Caribbean to be an enslaved people.
We don’t know the numbers who died on their way to this place, the numbers who were killed during that passage on the Atlantic. The horror of what happened here must always be remembered. It cannot be denied. It must be taught. History must be learned.
And we must then be guided by what we know also to be the history of those who survived in the Americas, in the Caribbean — those who proudly declare themselves to be the diaspora who then came out of — in, often, many situations — odds that were designed to break them, to demoralize them, to crea- — create systems and situations that were to make them feel like less than humans, less than full human beings.
But yet, they survived. And they tell another history — a history of endurance, a history of faith, a history in believing what is possible, a history not only that tells about the ability that each individual has to survive, but to thrive.
I’ve been there. Can’t describe the sadness and despair. It’s amazing that any of them survived their stay in those dungeons, the long journey cramped in the bottom of ships and the horrors of enslavement in the new world. But we’re here because they did.
thx pkayden, am really feeling it from you and VP. Have seen drawings of the boats, the sardine designs, are too much to handle. Man’s inhumanity, you don’t think it can be possible…the level of unconsciousness involved.

The reforms in Washington D.C.'s policing bill not only echo many of the Biden Administration’s own stated policies and goals, but they also reflect the continued need to address the alarming incidence of police killings of people of color in America.https://t.co/GsFCDqqQnL
The gun that divides a nation
The AR-15 thrives in times of tension and tragedy. This is how it came to dominate the marketplace – and loom so large in the American psyche.
“The AR-15 wasn’t supposed to be a bestseller.
The rugged, powerful weapon was originally designed as a soldiers’ rifle in the late 1950s. “An outstanding weapon with phenomenal lethality,” an internal Pentagon report raved. It soon became standard issue for U.S. troops in the Vietnam War, where the weapon earned a new name: the M16.”
A reminder that Ginni Thomas, who worked actively to overturn an election and whose activism is supported by secret money that could create conflicts of interest, is still serving on the Library of Congress Trust Fund Board. She should be removed.https://t.co/JLo1XD7fZl
Lawrence O’Donnell: “The first words of the Constitution are: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union…” It sounds much grander than it was. ‘We the People’ did not mean all the people in the place they were calling the United States. They were not including in ‘We the People’ the members of all the tribes who were murdered or relocated to make room for these people in the ‘We the People’ phrase. ‘We the People’ did not mean women. ‘We the People’ did not mean slaves. ‘We the People’ only meant affluent men who wrote the phrase’ We the People’. The Founders created a Supreme Court that the Founders assumed would be occupied by affluent men who would conduct themselves honorably with absolutely no supervision whatsoever needed at any time, and none of the Supreme Court justices would ever have wives with jobs.”
Good morning everyone. President Obama is correct. We are failing not just our children, but everyone in this country that doesn’t want to be slaughtered doing the simple tasks in life. It looks d insanity and we must change this through the ballot. We must vote for people that actually value everyone’s freedom to live life to its fullest
This! I start reciting the second amendment when someone wants to discuss their “God given right” to own guns. I put a large loud emphasis on “well-regulated militia”. If they try to talk over me there is the first amendment to recite. I also like to ask them if they know what the 3rd, 4th, 15th, 19th. Usually by that time they are swearing at me under their breath. Somehow they forgot or never knew there are more amendments than the 2nd. Their ignorance speaks loudly about education in USA. On a more positive note, my hero of the day, Rep. Stacey Plaskett, thank you for you service to our country and democracy, if only there were more of you in Congress, esp. on the other side of the isle.
Progress! This small but important change to clarify “personal hospitality” at SCOTUS is proof that loopholes can be closed and change can be enacted to strengthen ethical guardrails at the Court. I don’t plan to let up. Well done, Judicial Conference.https://t.co/j9T9xqfdLq
The vagueness of DeSantis's directives appears deliberately designed to create a climate of fear and rampant snitching. Man, what a time to be alive. I was listening to Joy Reid today and one of her guest basically said that Trump’s indictment has ushered in a completely new and different America. I think America has always had the strength to do the impossible, she just needed a convergence of forces to make it happen. From electing the first African American president to electing the first Black female Vice President to the first Transgender to hold political office and beyond. And on a personal note, I can’t wait for Trump and get fingerprinted, handcuffed, and perp-walked and have his mugshot taken. Man, what a time to be alive.
