      Seamróg:

St Patrick is credited with introducing the shamrock as a symbol of the Holy Trinity; it has since become a symbol of Irish identity. The number three is significant in Irish oral literature, with magical or mystical qualities representing a sense of wholeness or completeness. Irish mythology is replete with examples where deities are represented in three forms, such as the ancient goddesses of Ireland Ériu, Banba and Fódla. Heroes and characters in the ancient sagas often have three particular qualities, and their worthiness and abilities are measured by having to perform three tasks to overcome a challenge (or three).

Here’s our eight-part guide to St Patrick and our national holiday.

“And today new generations of young people are growing up with no memory of the conflicts their parents endured.”

“While Ireland is a militarily neutral country we’re not politically neutral in the face of violations of international law and human rights. The past 13 months have united us all who believe in freedom and democracy, and rule of law, and the U.N. charter. And we stand with Ukraine because silence means surrender. I will not stay silent when liberty, freedom and fundamental human rights are being attacked. So we will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes.”

    Des Moines, Iowa

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, let’s just first recognize where we are, which is, again, that a group of elected politicians are attempting to use the court of law to implement a political agenda that would undo the veracity and significance of a medical decision by the FDA about a medication — a decision that was made 20 years ago.

Understand also, the FDA has been approving medication for over 85 years, not only for this medication but for insulin, for asthma medication, for medication for high blood pressure, for chemotherapy medication.

Reporter Describes Being Fired By Axios After Being Targeted By Ron DeSantis’ Media ‘Machine’

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R) press team often attacks the reporters who cover his state. On Monday, they cost one of those journalists, Ben Montgomery, his job with Axios.
In a conversation with TPM, Montgomery said he felt the situation was an example of how DeSantis’ media “machine” was impacting the news business.

Joint Statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC
The following statement was released by Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen, Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome H. Powell, FDIC Chairman Martin J. Gruenberg and Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael J. Hsu:
“Today, 11 banks announced $30 billion in deposits into First Republic Bank. This show of support by a group of large banks is most welcome, and demonstrates the resilience of the banking system.”

“Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell and Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen acted decisively on Sunday, assuring the failed bank’s depositors that they would have immediate access to all of their funds, not just the $250,000 guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.” (Eugene Robinson)

“In 2015, Greg Becker, the chief executive of SVB — which he was until last Friday, when the bank collapsed and he was fired — joined lobbyists asking Congress to weaken mandated safeguards for “mid-sized” banks such as his. Congress complied by passing a deregulation law signed by President Donald Trump in 2018.”

      Opinion
If banks want federal rescue, they should accept federal regulation

      “Question: What is a socialist?
Answer: A libertarian tech bro who had money in Silicon Valley Bank.

There is nothing funny about the second-biggest bank failure in the nation’s history, which has roiled financial markets at a time when the economy is already unsettled. It is richly ironic, though, to hear luminaries of the tech sector, after years of complaining that “big government” was the problem, suddenly clamoring for massive federal intervention and largesse….”

“On Twitter, Sacks has railed against “profligate spending and money printing coming out of Washington” and the evils of what he calls “Bidenomics.”
But on Friday, Sacks was frantically calling for big government to come to the rescue of Silicon Valley Bank.

And I’m talking about people like another Musk confidant, investor Jason Calacanis, who was tweeting along the same lines on Saturday, but in all caps….”

New polling: Recent revelations have affected Fox News’ standing
Most Americans agree: Fox News should be punished over its post-election controversy. That majority includes a surprising number of Republican voters.

“While Fox News has denied all wrongdoing and is vigorously contesting the lawsuit, it was difficult not to wonder how much of this story would reach the public — and whether Americans would care. The latest national poll from Quinnipiac University suggests the controversy has had an effect on the network’s standing.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans (65 percent) think Fox News should be held accountable after Fox Chairman Rupert Murdoch acknowledged in a deposition that a number of the network’s hosts spread false information about the 2020 presidential election being stolen from Donald Trump, while 26 percent think Fox News should not be held accountable.
According to the results, 93% of Democrats agreed that the network should be held accountable, and 67% of self-identified independents agreed. Not surprisingly, there was a partisan gap — GOP voters are bound to be more sympathetic toward an outlet aligned with GOP politics — but Quinnipiac nevertheless found that 41% of Republicans also believe that Fox News should be held accountable.”

How Alaska’s coastal communities are racing against erosion
Melting permafrost is destroying coastal lands, affecting communities and villages, including those of Indigenous groups
“Dillingham is just one example of a small Alaskan town with a big erosion problem. Around the state, dozens of coastal communities are watching their coastlines crumble, losing at least 3 feet of land per year. Critical infrastructure such as airport runways, fuel tanks, and schools are in danger. Many Alaska Natives have been hard hit: Now, with climate change altering weather patterns, melting permafrost, and reducing sea ice, the land these communities are built on is falling into the sea.”

Omagosh…found it !! Can it be true?
A sweet Irishman played me this 78 rpm long ago on a misty eve – learned it by heart. Fast forward: I sang it at my wedding decades later. About a woman…which fit with my sister who had just taken her own life. I was about to give birth.

      —A very happy St. Patrick’s Day !! ☘️ 🍀

      • March 17, 2023 at 7:29 pm

        A little research…

She Moved Through the Fair was first collected in Donegal by poet Padraic Colum (1881-1972) and musicologist Herbert Hughes (1882-1937), and published by Boosey & Hawkes in London in Irish Country Songs in 1909. The tune is in mixolydian mode. The lyrics were also published in Colum’s book Wild Earth and Other Poems, (Macmillan, 1922, p. 26) though the book doesn’t mention their traditional origin.

The Irish tenor John McCormack recorded She Moved Through the Fair in 1941.
He seemed to have introduced the change from “my young love” to “my dead love” in the last verse.

Some in the mainstream media need to understand that this is not a matter of both sides. The Republican Party has proven itself to be a criminal cartel. A fascist cult.
You are not being “unbiased” by pretending it is just another political party. You are lying to your audience.

Trump killed his supporters and their families with COVID.
He helped get them thrown in prison by inciting January 6.
He stole their money and gave it to his billionaire friends.
And now he’s calling them to action to get arrested for him again.
