‘Our hair, our regalia, it’s who we are’
From Kilgore to the Capitol: Native moms who sued school after haircutting support bill seeking to protect students’ religious, cultural freedom

Alice Johnson stared down at the paper in her hands, the speech she’d practiced over and over until no amount of nerves could mask its message.
“Our hair, our regalia, it’s who we are. It’s who our ancestors were. It’s our identity,” she told the state senators, members of the Legislature’s Education Committee, on Feb. 13 at the Nebraska State Capitol.

    WOKE…

    • March 14, 2023 at 1:21 pm

      imho, DeSantis pls define “woke”.
Creating living hell for others at your level of unconsciousness…means waking up could take you a very long time. You know trans people are the most innocuous and have done nothing to cause you to hurt them. But being a slave to the recesses of your own mind, like Putin, you’re stuck in a prison of destruction and murder, hatred and ignorance.
Both of you can choose to unite instead of divide, transform the mind, and wake up.

—thx Ms. Klein for your precious 2007 book.

The Shock Doctrine, The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
    by Naomi Klein
    -2007-

“At the most chaotic juncture in Iraq’s civil war, a new law is unveiled that would allow Shell and BP to claim the country’s vast oil reserves…. Immediately following September 11, the Bush Administration quietly out-sources the running of the “War on Terror” to Halliburton and Blackwater…. After a tsunami wipes out the coasts of Southeast Asia, the pristine beaches are auctioned off to tourist resorts…. New Orleans’s residents, scattered from Hurricane Katrina, discover that their public housing, hospitals and schools will never be reopened…. These events are examples of “the shock doctrine”: using the public’s disorientation following massive collective shocks – wars, terrorist attacks, or natural disasters — to achieve control by imposing economic shock therapy. Sometimes, when the first two shocks don’t succeed in wiping out resistance, a third shock is employed: the electrode in the prison cell or the Taser gun on the streets.”
    (NaomiKlein.org)

imho we’re seeing DeSantis, trump and gop officials using U.S. public disorientation and collective SHOCK fallout of the Covid pandemic, to wipe out citizen resistance, democracy, and rewrite the Constitution = shock doctrine.

Rachel Maddow dove into the political story of how Dodd-Frank was weakened, and she gave a shout-out to Kyrsten Sinema for voting with Republicans to set the stage for more bank collapses.

Maddow explained the 2018 vote to weaken Dodd-Frank:

Those new rules were very hard-fought after the 2008-2009 financial catastrophe. They were passed by the Democratic-led congress and signed by President Obama in 2010. What happened? Eight years later in 2018 after relentless lobbying by the banks and financial industry, once Republicans are in control of congress and President Donald Trump was in the white house, guess what happened? They decided it was past time to roll back those new safeguards.

It was passed and signed by then-president Donald Trump in 2018 and was passed by all of the Republicans and 17 Democrats and moderate and conservative Democratic senators who joined with the Republicans to pass it. In the House, 33 Democrats who joined with the Republicans to pass it, including future Democratic — no longer Democratic senator Kyrsten Sinema. That would repeal the Dodd-Frank seatbelt and safety regulations in 2018 made it so those rules that were put into effect to stop there from being another crisis, they would not apply to banks anymore.

Easley: “Republicans want to act like the weakening of the Dodd-Frank regulations was something both parties broadly supported. It wasn’t. Trump and the GOP’s deregulation of banks was voted for by Democrats like Sinema and other conservative Democrats who were worried about keeping their seats.”

    President Biden:

No losses will be — and I want — this is an important point — no losses will be borne by the taxpayers. Let me repeat that: No losses will be borne by the taxpayers. Instead, the money will come from the fees that banks pay into the Deposit Insurance Fund.

Because of the actions of that — because of the actions that our regulators have already taken, every American should feel confident that their deposits will be there if and when they need them.

Timothy Snyder speaking with Lawrence O’Donnell:

      O’Donnell:
“So we have one party that is perfectly happy to tolerate and support a nominee who never says anything serious about foreign policy and therefore it ends up being very encouraging to Vladimir Putin.”

      Snyder:
“I mean that’s the story of four years of Trump. Four years of Trump meant encouragement not just to Vladimir Putin but dictators around the world. Because he made it very clear that insofar as he had an interest in matters foreign, it was in buddying up to dictators.

And the thing is whether we like it or not, we are in this world.
And whether we like it or not, Russia invaded Ukraine.
And the Russian invasion of Ukraine matters for the international legal order which allows America to be prosperous.

It matters in that if we let the Ukrainians lose we’ll be encouraging nuclear proliferation.
It matters because the Ukrainians defeating Russia is key to preventing war in Europe down the line.
It matters because Ukrainian resistance is what is making Beijing think twice before starting an adventure over Taiwan.
It matters because of food supplies around the world.
We can’t just close our eyes to that.
Because if you do, those things will come back and they’ll make a great deal of difference to average Americans.

Ukrainians are doing a HUGE amount for America national security right now. Basically for nothing. I mean for a penny on our tax dollar.
They’re doing a huge amount for America national security.
And it would be sad to see major politicians of any party not recognize that.”

“My second point will be that the term “russophobia,” which we are discussing today, has been exploited during this war as a form of imperial propaganda in which the aggressor claims to be the victim. It has served this last year as a justification for Russian war crimes in Ukraine.”

Neo-Nazis Chanting ‘Sieg Heil’ Target Drag Queen Story Event
    Christopher Wiggins

Hundreds of armed far-right extremists, including “Sieg Heil” chanting neo-Nazis, joined by right-wing Christian groups, converged on a park in Ohio where parents and children had gathered to enjoy a drag queen story event Saturday. The extremists clashed with rainbow umbrella-wielding supporters who had shown up to protect the event.

At Wadsworth Memorial Park outside Akron, the Rock-n-Roll Humanist Drag Queen Story Hour ended in chaos as tensions raged between activists and protesters.

A number of far-right extremist and religious groups, including the Proud Boys, Patriot Front, III Percenters, “White Lives Matter of Ohio,” Blood Tribe (a neo-Nazi movement led by former Marine Chris Pohlhaus, who was armed), and unaffiliated conservatives, attended the event to disrupt it.

“Children were shielded from the hatred on display by the Parasol Patrol throughout the raucous scenes. During events where detractors may appear, the Parasol Patrol uses rainbow-colored umbrellas to escort families safely to LGBTQ-friendly venues. Sometimes they also give kids headphones to wear, so they don’t hear people yelling outrageous things.

One protester pulled a gun and pointed it at a group of supporters at one point in the video and tried to shoot it twice but failed. The unidentified man was later arrested in another incident after he appeared to strike someone with a pole.”
