Black publishers request Speaker McCarthy grant equal access to 41K hours of Jan. 6 Commission footage after Fox News receives documents
This is a matter of equal access to governmental information for the Black Press of America and specifically referencing the fact that Speaker McCarthy set the precedent by providing the 41,000 hours of footage to Fox News. The NNPA awaits a timely response to this request for equal access.
“The U.S. Constitution does not distinguish the freedoms of the press to just white press, mainstream press, or right-wing press. These freedoms are afforded to ALL media. The Black Press is a trusted voice in African American communities and should receive the same equity and access as all other press entities in the U.S.” says Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), known as the Black Press.
The NNPA has made two requests, both of which have gone unanswered by Speaker McCarthy.
“The NNPA calls upon Speaker McCarthy to uphold the principles of equal access to government information and provide the 41,000 hours of security tape footage to the NNPA immediately.”

Naturally, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida wants to demolish it, at least as it currently exists. On Friday, he announced six new appointments to New College’s 13-member board of trustees, including Chris Rufo, who orchestrated the right’s attack on critical race theory, and Matthew Spalding, a professor and dean at Hillsdale College, a conservative Christian school in Michigan with close ties to Donald Trump. (A seventh member will soon be appointed by Florida’s Board of Governors, which is full of DeSantis allies.)
The new majority’s plan, Rufo told me just after his appointment was announced, is to transform New College into a public version of Hillsdale. “We want to provide an alternative for conservative families in the state of Florida to say there is a public university that reflects your values,” he said.

A timely new study traces the rapid and curious rise of the major questions doctrine, spurred by conservative scholars and commentators and driven by hostility to administrative agencies.
“The phrase was used just once by any federal judge before 2017, and in only five federal decisions — at any level of court — before 2020,” Allison Orr Larsen, a law professor at William & Mary, wrote in the new study, “Becoming a Doctrine.”
But she added that there had been a lot of other activity aimed at elevating a theory into something concrete and unassailable: a doctrine.
“The word ‘doctrine’ to describe the major questions concept was first used by law professors and then bandied about on blogs, quickly picked up by advocacy groups on Twitter and used as a rallying cry in opinion pieces and programming by those seeking to challenge the administrative state,” she wrote.

“The bill, as sponsored by state Rep. Jonathan Windy Boy, Democrat, proposes stronger accountability into Indian Education for All, a curricular requirement embedded into the state’s constitution that requires schools to incorporate curriculum on Native American history in Montana. So far, the bill has passed the House with a 73-24 vote and is expected to move onto the Senate floor.”

Montana bill would strengthen law requiring Indigenous education
The bill comes amid concerns that schools have not properly implemented the curriculum requirement, which is embedded in the state’s constitution
HELENA, Mont. — A bill that would implement accountability measures into a unique Montana law that requires the state’s public schools to create and teach Indigenous history, is so far making its way through the Legislature with noticeable support.
“The bill, as sponsored by state Rep. Jonathan Windy Boy, Democrat, proposes stronger accountability into Indian Education for All, a curricular requirement embedded into the state’s constitution that requires schools to incorporate curriculum on Native American history in Montana. So far, the bill has passed the House with a 73-24 vote and is expected to move onto the Senate floor.”
