“Brazen” Fraud: David Cay Johnston on How Trump’s Tax Returns Show He Fleeced U.S. & Enriched Himself

    AMY GOODMAN: …with Juan González.

After years of legal battles between former President Donald Trump and Congress, the House Ways and Means Committee released six years of Trump’s tax returns Friday, including thousands of documents from the years he ran for president and was in office. The records reveal Trump paid just $750 in federal income taxes during his first year in office in 2017. In his last year in office, 2020, he paid no federal taxes.

They also showed the tax law Trump signed in late 2017 opened new opportunities for him, and disclosed income from a wide range of foreign countries, including Canada, Panama, the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, the Philippines, United Arab Emirates, China and Britain. Trump responded to the release in a video statement.

Rachel Maddow Highlights The Connection Between Election Denial And The New Mexico Shooter

    Maddow said:

“Now, you heard the mayor reference this was about a right-wing radical, an election denier who was arrested today. What that references, I believe, are the frequent public statements, online social media statements by this Republican candidate maintaining that he didn’t actually lose this election in which he was the Republican candidate this past November.

Again, the Republican party nominated him to be their candidate for the state legislative seat outin Albuquerque in November. He lost by a large Marge en, by more than 3500 votes. Since then he has maintained that he didn’t really lose and the election was rigged against him.

Local coverage of his candidacy has noted that he is a, in the words of the Santa Fe New Mexican, gushing supporter of former president Donald Trump. He appears to have emulated Trump in rejecting the results of the election that he lost, but police in Albuquerque tonight say he went much further than that, accusing him tonight formally, charging him with having pulled the trigger himself and led a conspiracy with four other men to shoot into the homes of other Democratic officials.”

      imo,
what is the lawyer perspective? Under federal law University professors in this state are NOT allowed to hand out student information to ANYONE. DeSantis is asking Universities to hand out information to one of his nefarious state agencies. What does the ACLU and other watchdogs have to say about it – pls act fast to end this gross invasion.

    Ronald Klain

Two years ago today, in the midst of overwhelming crises and division,
@POTUS and @VP were sworn in.

While there is much to be done, here’s a 🧵about the incredible two years of progress we’ve seen.

    – Greatest two years of job creation in history: 11 million new jobs
    – The most sweeping economic recovery and investment plan since FDR
    – 700m COVID shots given for free; COVID deaths down 80%
    – 100 new judges with unprecedented diversity, including 1st black woman on SCOTUS

    United States government official
    – Unemployment rate at 50 year low
    – Largest infrastructure bill since Ike was President
    – Major bipartisan legislation after skeptics said it was not possible: infrastructure, CHIPS, PACT Act
    – Most Americans w/ health coverage than EVER

    – First cabinet ever equally divided male/female
    – Cap on insulin costs and first-ever prescription drug negotiations
    – Global leadership to confront Russian aggression in Ukraine
    – Pardoned all marijuana possession offenders
    – Unprecedented success in midterm elections

Executive action on student loan debt to help 40m borrowers
    – Most sweeping legislation enacted by any govt on Earth to combat climate crisis
    – SPR releases to bring down the price of gas
    – PACT Act to help vets hurt by burn pits

CHIPS Act bringing high-tech manufacturing back to USA
    – Historic lows in Black and Hispanic unemployment
    – Ended America’s longest war
    – Unprecedented police reform exec order
    – Best two years ever for small business creation

This is just a PARTIAL list of progress. And there’s so much more to do. But it’s been an incredible two years of action — thanks to everyone who helped make it happen.

America Hit Its Debt Limit, Setting Up Bitter Fiscal Fight

The Treasury Department said it would begin a series of accounting moves to keep the U.S. from breaching its borrowing cap and asked Congress to raise or suspend the limit.
By Jim Tankersley and Alan Rappeport

“The period of time that extraordinary measures may last is subject to considerable uncertainty, including the challenges of forecasting the payments and receipts of the U.S. government months into the future,” Ms. Yellen said. “I respectfully urge Congress to act promptly to protect the full faith and credit of the United States.”

“Newly empowered House Republicans have vowed that they will not raise the borrowing limit again unless President Biden agrees to steep cuts in federal spending. Mr. Biden has said he will not negotiate conditions for a debt-limit increase, arguing that lawmakers should lift the cap with no strings attached to cover spending that previous Congresses authorized.”

—ask them what happens when they don’t make their mortgage payment?

—been done umpteen times up the wazoo already.
—what happened to ending this process once and for all?
—Global. Depression: does gop understand the meaning of these words

  44. January 20, 2023 at 10:39 am

    Since 1960, Congress
    has acted 78 separate times
to permanently raise, temporarily extend, or revise the definition of the debt limit –
    49 times under Republican presidents
and 29 times under Democratic presidents.

The debt limit does not authorize new spending commitments. It simply allows the government to finance existing legal obligations that Congresses and presidents of both parties have made in the past.

Failing to increase the debt limit would have catastrophic economic consequences. It would cause the government to default on its legal obligations – an unprecedented event in American history.

The wonderful Congresswoman Jackson Lee introduces bill to fight white supremacy, ‘the largest part of domestic terrorism’

    • January 20, 2023 at 1:29 pm

      HR61
A bill to fight white supremacy has been introduced by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, and has been met by outrage from the far-right. “White supremacy is the largest part of domestic terrorism, and domestic terrorism is larger than our fears of years back of Al-Qaeda,” Lee tells Joy Reid. “I only wanted to make sure that we had a bill that addressed that.”
