For Dems, there’s a big difference between 51 and 50 Senate seats
Democrats were going to be in the majority anyway, no matter the outcome in Georgia, but the difference between 51 and 50 Senate seats is enormous.

Outside a handful of failed states, we are unique among nations in tolerating the proliferation of guns on our streets and allowing our civilians to routinely purchase high powered weapons of war.”

““In this case, North Carolina Republicans are using a truly fringe legal theory to try to undermine our system of checks and balances – an extreme and dangerous move in response to the North Carolina Supreme Court decision that held them accountable for violating the state constitution,” said Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States. “This should not be a difficult decision for the Court in favor of the respondents, one that would protect voters against extreme efforts to manipulate federal elections. Anything less than that is unacceptable. Should the Court endorse the petitioners’ theory, it would not only damage a cornerstone of our democracy, it could unleash a level of gerrymandering from both parties across the country that would do incalculable damage to our democracy.”

Supreme Court Hears Arguments On Fringe Election Theory That Could Upend American Democracy

The independent state legislature theory came under harsh criticism, but at least three conservatives appeared supportive.

The justices on the Supreme Court appeared split Wednesday over whether to back a fringe theory that would upend election and redistricting law in every state.

Neal Katyal, counsel for the nonprofit group Common Cause,
followed Thompson by arguing that the independent state legislature theory is wrong because it has no basis in the history, text or structure of the Constitution.

“For 233 years, the states have not read the elections clause the way you just heard,” Katyal said. Adding that, “Petitioners say, for two centuries, nearly everyone has been reading the [elections] clause wrong. That’s a lot of wrong … past elections.”

Herschel Walker Is an American Tragedy
    Black bodies, white agendas

    By Caroline Randall Williams

Commodity. Chattel. Contraband. Capital. What is a Black body in the South? What is a Black southern man, carted out to work a white-owned field?

It’s impossible today to talk about Black men and white agendas without talking about Herschel Walker, the Republican candidate for Senate in the runoff election in Georgia. But in order to talk about Walker, I’ve got to start in what may be his actual state of residence, Texas.

Remarks by President Biden on the Release of Brittney Griner

And now I’d like invite Cherelle to say a few words to you all. Of course, she’s not excited at all about this. Cherelle, it’s all yours, kiddo. Congratulations again.

MS. GRINER: Thank you. Thank you.

So, over the last nine months, you all have been so privy to one of the darkest moments of my life. And so, today, I’m just standing here overwhelmed with emotions. But the most important emotion that I have right now is just sincere gratitude for President Biden and his entire administration.

He just mentioned this work is not easy, and it has not been. There’s been so many hands involved, and so I’d like to take a moment to just specifically mention a few: Vice President Harris, Secretary Blinken, Jake Sullivan, Josh Geltzer from the National Security Council. Roger Carstens and Fletcher Schoen from the Hostage Envoy’s Office. A special thank you to Governor Richardson and Mickey. The Mercury players, the WNBPA for your advocacy. And also, you guys may not know this, but my family has been tremendously supported by the Wasserman agency. BG’s agent, Lindsay Colas, has just been amazing for me and my family throughout this process.

So, today, my family is whole. But as you all are aware, there’s so many other families who are not whole, and so BG is not here to say this, but I will gladly speak on her behalf and say that BG and I will remain committed to the work of getting every American home, including Paul, whose family is in our hearts today as we celebrate BG being home. We do understand that there are still people out here who are enduring what I endured the last nine months of missing tremendously their loved ones.

So, thank you, everybody, for your support. And today is just a happy day for me and my family. So, I’m going to smile right now. Thank you.

Washington Post Op-Ed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi: I’m proud to protect marriage as one of my last acts as speaker

“Our Respect for Marriage Act combats this threat by requiring states to recognize same-sex marriages, as long as they are valid in the state where they were performed. It also finally repeals the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act, so that no future MAGA majority in Congress or president in the White House can wield this policy as a weapon of bigotry.

We soon will send this vital legislation to President Biden for signature: a glorious triumph of love, of freedom and of dignity for all.

This action is the latest step forward in House Democrats’ longtime fight for full equality, waged alongside generations of fearless activists.”

If Sinema were to caucus with the Republicans, she would not get to keep her committee assignments, and Democrats aren’t just going to give the committees that she wants.

She has no chance of getting them without caucusing with the Democrats.”

Statement By President Joe Biden on Bipartisan House Passage of the Respect for Marriage Act

Today, Congress took a critical step to ensure that Americans have the right to marry the person they love. The House’s bipartisan passage of the Respect for Marriage Act—by a significant margin—will give peace of mind to millions of LGBTQI+ and interracial couples who are now guaranteed the rights and protections to which they and their children are entitled.

After the uncertainty caused by the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, Congress has restored a measure of security to millions of marriages and families. They have also provided hope and dignity to millions of young people across this country who can grow up knowing that their government will recognize and respect the families they build.

I want to once again thank the unwavering champions of this legislation in Congress—Representatives Nadler, Cicilline, and Davids in the House, and Senators Baldwin, Collins, Portman, Sinema, Tillis, and Feinstein in the Senate—who refused to be deterred and brought this vital bill over the finish line. Together, we showed that it’s possible for Democrats and Republicans to come together to safeguard our most fundamental rights.

On this day, Jill and I are thinking of the courageous couples and fiercely committed advocates who have fought for decades to secure nationwide marriage equality at the Supreme Court and in Congress. While we are one step closer on our long journey to build a more perfect union, we must never stop fighting for full equality for LGBTQI+ Americans and all Americans.

“And my parishioner, God bless his memory, John Lewis, who one day crossed the bridge knowing that there was danger on the other side. And yet, he crossed that bridge while building a bridge for the future.

And so, Georgia, this is my promise to you, the work that we must do is difficult, the issues are not simple, they’re complex, but here’s my promise to you, I will walk with you even as I work for you.”

King Pleasure is the title of a painting created by Jean-Michel in 1987 and the name of a bebop-loving bartender turned jazz vocalist whose first hit, in 1952, “Moody’s Mood For Love,” catapulted him to fame. The song was a favorite of the WBLS DJ Frankie Crocker, who played it at the close of his show every night in the 1970s. Gerard Basquiat, Jean-Michel’s father, was also fond of the tune.

—J-M Basquiat died at 27 years.
