Pelosi Statement on Passing of Congressman Donald McEachin

For two decades, Congressman McEachin was a distinguished leader on climate in Richmond: serving in both the House of Delegates and the State Senate. A respected voice on the Energy and Commerce and Natural Resources Committees, he advocated to lower costs, expand broadband access and protect families from gun violence. His many contributions to our Select Committee on the Climate Crisis helped lay the essential groundwork for our climate action over the last two years, especially the important progress toward environmental justice.

What Georgia Teaches Us About Voter Suppression
    By Marc Elias

“Georgia election officials, supported by the Republican Party, tried to prevent 70,050 citizens from voting this past Saturday in the hotly contested runoff election for U.S. Senate between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and his Republican challenger Herschel Walker. While Republicans didn’t get away with it, the fact that they tried should be a national outrage. ”

Remarks by President Biden on Growing the Economy and Creating Good-Paying Jobs

“We’re making the single-largest investment ever — $1 billion — to clean up and restore areas around the Great Lakes, including — (applause) — including the Detroit River, the Kalamazoo River, Torch Lake. (Applause.) This is going to matter. It’s going to matter for your kids and your grandkids in a big way.

Mitch Landrieu, the head of our infrastructure program, was just down the road in Saginaw announcing hundreds of millions of dollars of funding to clean up drinking water across the state of Michigan and replace lead service lines. (Applause.)

We’re making sure: No more Flints ever again. (Applause.) I mean it. No more Flints ever again.

We’re increasing capacity at the Port of Detroit, rebuilding platforms to handle dry-bulk cargo, improving the connection for rail lines so companies making things here in Michigan can get their products to market faster and cheaper.

And when you see these big projects in your hometown and cranes going up, shovels in the ground, workers with hardhats, I want you to feel the way I feel: pride — pride in what we can do when we do it together.”

    What Marriage Means to Me

    Chasten Buttigieg

After dropping the kids off, I came home and stopped in the kitchen to take in the aftermath of our chaotic morning together. And it got me thinking.

“There were the bibs I should have tossed in the sink that were leaking milk onto the counter. Their little toothbrushes they used to scrub the teeth that have been keeping them up at night. Tiny hairbands from Penelope’s quick updo in which she kept repeating the word “bosh” while I brushed her hair as she wiggled her head out of my grasp with each stroke. The stacked plates, empty and crusty after a hurried but hilarious breakfast full of giggles ad music. The twins and I bounced along to the Christmas music as they ate their bananas and eggs while I prayed for the coffee maker to go faster. Pete used to protest Christmas music in the morning, now he encourages it. Parenting changes us, doesn’t it?”

    NEXT WEDNESDAY…

Moore v. Harper: A Dangerous Theory Has Its Day in Court
    By Mac Brower, Ellis Champion

“On Wednesday, Dec. 7, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear Moore v. Harper. The case, which deals with congressional redistricting in North Carolina, gives the Court the opportunity to review the fringe independent state legislature (ISL) theory.

“At its core, the ISL theory is about how the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted when it comes to running federal elections. This theory, thus far dismissed by courts as a fringe and untenable constitutional theory, argues that state legislatures alone have special authority to set federal election rules, free from interference from other parts of the state government such as state courts and governors. This special authority, according to the ISL theory, means that only state legislatures can draw new congressional districts and any map adopted by a state judicial system is unconstitutional. How the Court rules on this issue raised in Moore could shape state legislatures’ power in regulating federal elections — and the checks and balances on this power — for years to come.”

I will go to my grave strongly believing that so many in the USA could not, can not to this day accept that a Black man resided in the “White House”, which was built by black men. So actually, if anyone wants to claim owner ship to the White House it isn’t whites, especially males. I thank God every day that President Obama in my lifetime was elected president. I remind myself than not once, but twice, the majority voted for him, just thinking about that gives me enough hope that maybe democracy will survive the evil that is republican.

The evolution of Asia’s mammals was dictated by ancient climate change and rising mountains, study reveals

The idea that climate change and geological events can shape evolution isn’t a new one: anyone who’s heard of dinosaurs knows that a big change in the environment (like, say, a meteor hitting the Earth 66 million years ago and causing a chain reaction of storms, earthquakes, cold, and darkness) can dictate how animals live, die, and evolve.

“But while it’s a generally agreed-upon concept, scientists rely on painstakingly precise data to map how these sorts of changes affect the course of evolution for even one species. A new study in PNAS compiles data on more than 3,000 species to show how climate and geologic changes across Asia over the last 66 million years have shaped the evolution of the continent’s mammals.”
