A former head of Mississippi’s welfare agency agreed to terms on a plea with federal and state prosecutors on Thursday, a major turn in an investigation that could spell trouble for Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.

John Davis, the former director of Mississippi Department of Human Services director, pleaded guilty Thursday for his role widening scandal related to more than $70 million in misappropriated welfare funds in the state with the highest level of poverty in the nation. As part a plea agreement, Davis has agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Why Women Are Driving A Large And Growing Protest Movement In Iran

    • September 23, 2022 at 1:52 pm

Women are standing up for their rights around the world, to wear a hajib, to not wear a hajib, for the right to take care of and say what’s what about the body they were born with, to protest the conscription of the child they brought into this world.

Women are not breeders or brainless dress up dolls, and trump-y America is about to find out.
      imo.

Pelosi Statement on House Republican Rollout of Extreme MAGA Agenda

“Today’s rollout is the latest evidence of House Republicans’ whole-hearted Commitment to MAGA: going all-in on an extremist agenda designed to greatly diminish Americans’ health, freedom and security.

This alarming new extreme MAGA platform threatens to criminalize women’s health care, slash seniors’ Medicare and raise prescription drug prices, and attack our free and fair elections. These appalling proposals have long been advanced by right-wing politicians and are widely supported by the dark money special interests who call the shots in the GOP.”

Statement from Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Arizona’s Court Decision

Yesterday’s ruling in Arizona is dangerous and will set Arizona women back more than a century – to a time before Arizona was even a state. If this decision stands, health care providers would face imprisonment of up to five years for fulfilling their duty of care; survivors of rape and incest would be forced to bear the children of their assaulters; and women with medical conditions would face dire health risks. While we await next steps on any implementation of the law, the potential consequences of this ruling are catastrophic, dangerous, and unacceptable. Make no mistake: this backwards decision exemplifies the disturbing trend across the country of Republican officials at the local and national level dead-set on stripping women of their rights, including through Senator Graham’s proposed national abortion ban. The contrast between the President and his focus on moving the country forward and Republican officials’ obsession with taking our country backwards could not be more stark. The President and Vice President will continue to push Congress to codify Roe to protect women’s access to abortion and health care.

Cuba has voted to legalise same-sex marriage in a national referendum.

About two-thirds of the population voted to approve reforms in a new Family Code, which will also allow surrogate pregnancies and give gay couples the right to adopt children.

It marks a big moment for Cuba, which saw gay people persecuted and sent to work camps in the 1960s and 70s.

However, there was significant opposition to the reforms among religious groups and conservatives.

This Threat to Democracy Is Hiding in Plain Sight

“This is where Mr. Trump’s allies have focused much of their scheming since his
re-election defeat. Their mission is to take over America’s election infrastructure, or at least key parts of it, from the ground up by filling key positions of influence with Trump sympathizers. Rather than threatening election officials, they will be the election officials — the poll workers and county commissioners and secretaries of state responsible for overseeing the casting, counting and certifying of votes.”

“But Mr. Trump’s attempts to subvert the election also revealed the system’s vulnerabilities, and his allies are now intently focused on exploiting those pressure points to bend the infrastructure of voting to their advantage. Their drive to take over election machinery county by county, state by state, is a reminder that democracy is fragile. The threats to it are not only violent ruptures like the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol but also quieter efforts to corrupt it.

A key element of this strategy is dismantling the bulwarks that stopped the assault on democracy in 2020.”

The Second Amendment Gives No Comfort to Insurrectionists
    by Jamie Raskin

“This is for excellent reason. The Constitution treats insurrection and rebellion as political dangers, not protected rights. Article I gives Congress the power to “provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the Union, suppress insurrections and repel invasions.” The guarantee clause in Article IV tells the United States to guarantee a republican form of government to the states and protect them “against invasion; and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence.” These provisions followed Shays’ Rebellion, an armed uprising in Massachusetts in the 1780s.

After the Civil War, the 14th Amendment disqualified from public office anyone who had sworn an oath to support the Constitution but then participated in “insurrection or rebellion” against the United States.”

“Trump’s extreme followers claim that the Second Amendment gives armed private groups the right to overthrow the govt. What nonsense.
