Ron Howard’s film “Thirteen Lives” employed actors with regional accents and producers from Thailand to ensure the depiction of the miraculous rescue remained a fully Thai story.

    By Frances Nguyen

In “Thirteen Lives,” a documentary-styled dramatization of the 2018 flooded cave-complex rescue in northern Thailand, telling the story from the perspective of the local Thai people was a priority.

To tell the story of the rescue of a youth soccer team and their coach, film director Ron Howard styled it as an ensemble film with a small cast not only of individual heroes, but also a wide array of characters who ultimately made it happen. It was the individual acts of heroism of the people involved, most of whom were Thai, that amounted to the miraculous rescue.

The film, released on Amazon Prime and in select theaters, tells the story of the villagers helping the rescue effort by diverting rainwater from the mountain above and the farmers’ flooding their paddy fields to receive the water, even if that meant losing their livelihoods — all the while the parents remained committed to keep faith.”

    Behind the Lens: Mateo Zapata
In honor of Latinx Heritage Month, we sat down with Mateo Zapata, a Chicago-based photographer documenting the public health crisis, the ways it’s disproportionately affecting his community, and the systemic inequality it has brought to light. We spoke about how his heritage has influenced his work, and the message he hopes young people take from his images—
that when the world stopped, it was people of color who kept it turning…

“Our community consists of hardworking families and essential workers that are literally sustaining the economy. I don’t think enough young people know that—or are aware of that. It’s important for them to know, whether it’s right now or ten years from now. Immigrants have been criminalized lately. It’s important for our youth to be proud of their identity and witness positive representations of their community. When people are talking about what happened in the year 2020, and all these events and moments in history come up, I want them to remember and to acknowledge that there were essential workers that came from Black and Brown communities. That has to be documented. Our community’s workforce is essential, but our community’s need for resources and safety needs to be essential, too. That reality has to be acknowledged.”

To close his conversation with us, Mateo shared a dicho from his community—a family proverb passed down for generations. It’s a saying he still finds strength in every morning,
one seen in every photo he takes. Of his community. For his community: El sol sale para todos.
The sun shines for everyone. ”It’s this idea that the sun, that light, this day you’re waking up to is also yours. This is all for you. All this around you—all this light, of this nature, of this community, all this city, this world, is for you.”

Statement by President Joe Biden Marking Slavery Remembrance Day

    AUGUST 20, 2022

More than 400 years ago, twenty enslaved Africans were forcibly brought to the shores of what would become the United States. Millions more were stolen and sold in the centuries that followed, part of a system of slavery that is America’s original sin.

Great nations don’t hide from their history. They acknowledge their past, both the triumphs and the tragedies. Today is a day to reflect on the terrible toll of slavery, and on our nation’s profound ability to heal and emerge stronger. Despite the horrors they faced, these men and women and their descendants have made countless contributions to the building of this nation and the continuous effort to realize the American ideal. I was honored last year to declare Juneteenth a national holiday, another moment to reflect and rededicate ourselves to becoming a more perfect union. And it’s why my Administration will continue the hard, ongoing work to bring true equity and racial justice to our country.

I’m grateful for the efforts of Congress—in particular, Representative Al Green and Senator Elizabeth Warren—to recognize the significance of this day.

Millions of Native Americans were replaced at the point of European contact.
In 1492 there was an Indigenous population of 60 million. (Europe’s population at the time was 70 to 88 million.) Over the next hundred years 90% of Native Americans died.
55 million people died due to violence and never-before-seen pathogens like smallpox, measles, and influenza.

Jimi Hendrix – Although he is arguably one of the most legendary guitarists in rock history, most fans may not know that Hendrix was Native American.

Hendrix was African-American, European, Hispanic and Native American, as his grandmother descended from the Cherokee tribe. Hendrix supported other Native musicians like “Redbone.” Hendrix’s music greatly influenced the psychedelic-rock movement and goes down in rock history as one of the best electric guitarists of all time. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

Statement from President Joe Biden on the announcement of
Dr. Anthony Fauci’s Departure from NIAID

    AUGUST 22, 2022

During my time as Vice President, I worked closely with Dr. Anthony Fauci on the United States’ response to Zika and Ebola. I came to know him as a dedicated public servant, and a steady hand with wisdom and insight honed over decades at the forefront of some of our most dangerous and challenging public health crises. When it came time to build a team to lead our COVID-19 response – in fact, in one of my first calls as President-elect – I immediately asked Dr. Fauci to extend his service as my Chief Medical Advisor to deal with the COVID-19 crisis our nation faced. In that role, I’ve been able to call him at any hour of the day for his advice as we’ve tackled this once-in-a-generation pandemic. His commitment to the work is unwavering, and he does it with an unparalleled spirit, energy, and scientific integrity.

Dr. Fauci has served under seven Republican and Democratic Presidents during his career, beginning with Ronald Reagan. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008 under President George W. Bush. For almost four decades, he has served as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, helping our country navigate health crises ranging from HIV/AIDS to COVID-19. Because of Dr. Fauci’s many contributions to public health, lives here in the United States and around the world have been saved. As he leaves his position in the U.S. Government, I know the American people and the entire world will continue to benefit from Dr. Fauci’s expertise in whatever he does next. Whether you’ve met him personally or not, he has touched all Americans’ lives with his work. I extend my deepest thanks for his public service. The United States of America is stronger, more resilient, and healthier because of him.

Fauci Says He Will Step Down in December to Pursue His ‘Next Chapter’
Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, who has advised seven presidents and spent more than half a century at the National Institutes of Health, will leave government service by the end of the year.

“Dr. Anthony S. Fauci said on Monday that he intended to leave government service in December to “pursue the next chapter” of his career, and that he would step down as President Biden’s top medical adviser and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases,
which he has led for 38 years.

The announcement by Dr. Fauci, 81, was not entirely unexpected. He has hinted for some time that he was thinking of retiring. In an interview Sunday evening, he said he was “not retiring in the classic sense” but would devote himself to traveling, writing and encouraging young people to enter government service.”

Trump Had More Than 300 Classified Documents at Mar-a-Lago

The National Archives found more than 150 sensitive documents when it got a first batch of material from the former president in January, helping to explain the Justice Department’s urgent response.

“In total, the government has recovered more than 300 documents with classified markings from Mr. Trump since he left office, the people said: that first batch of documents returned in January, another set provided by Mr. Trump’s aides to the Justice Department in June and the material seized by the F.B.I. in the search this month.”

      Laurence Tribe:

“It’s very strange. For one thing, it’s filed not on behalf of private citizen Trump but filed on behalf of President Donald J. Trump. You know, it’s never been clear that he distinguishes between himself as a private citizen and himself as president. That may help explain just psychologically why he feels he’s entitled to all these papers. He says they’re his. That’s one thing that’s really strange. Another thing that’s quite strange. You mentioned yourself just a minute ago, he waited a couple of weeks. So it’s sort of too late to ask for some new special master.”

      (Also a statement):
“on page 13 that President Trump should not be treated differently from any other citizen. Finally, he gets that right.

Any other citizen who took top-secret material to not just a private home but a resort,
like Mar-a-Lago which has been penetrated by Chinese spies and perhaps by others, would be prosecuted under the Espionage Act. So he is sort of asking Merrick Garland to prosecute him.

Thank you Mr. Trump. I won’t call him President Trump.”

An Unusual $1.6 Billion Donation Bolsters Conservatives
A low-profile Republican financier donated his company to a new group run by the influential operative Leonard A. Leo.

“The source of the money was Barre Seid, an electronics manufacturing mogul, and the donation is among the largest — if not the largest — single contributions ever made to a politically focused nonprofit. The beneficiary is a new political group controlled by Leonard A. Leo, an activist who has used his connections to Republican donors and politicians to help engineer the conservative dominance of the Supreme Court and to finance battles over abortion rights, voting rules and climate change policy.

This windfall will help cement Mr. Leo’s status as a kingmaker in conservative big money politics.
It could also give conservatives an advantage in a type of difficult-to-trace spending that shapes elections and political fights.”

The letter, which was sent to the former president’s lawyers, described the state of alarm in the Justice Department as officials began to realize the nature of the documents kept at Mar-a-Lago.
