Thank god for our progressive courts

HC allows son of single woman to keep mother’s name alone in documents.

The children of unwed mothers and rape victims can live in this country with the fundamental rights of privacy, liberty, and dignity, the Kerala high court has said and allowed a person to include his mother’s name alone in the birth certificate, identity certificates and other documents.

Justice PV Kunhikrishnan, in an order issued on July 19, said a child of an unwed mother is also a citizen of this country and nobody can infringe any of his/her fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

“The children of unwed mothers and the children of rape victim can also live in this country with the fundamental rights of privacy, liberty, and dignity. None can intrude into their personal life, and if it happens, the constitutional Court of this country will protect their fundamental rights,” the order said.

Our supreme court, especially the current crop of SC justices, are great and are willing to stare down modi and his thugs.

SC nod to terminate 24-week foetus, expands MTP Act to include single women.

In a significant order, the Supreme Court Thursday expanded the scope of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act to include ‘unmarried woman’ and allowed a woman to abort her 24-weeks pregnancy arising out of a consensual relationship.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and AS Bopanna directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences director to set up a medical board of two doctors to examine the woman by Friday under the provisions of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.

It asked the board to determine whether the pregnancy if terminated could risk the life of the woman or not.

“We request the AIIMS director to constitute a medical board in terms of provisions of section 3(2)(d) MTP Act by tomorrow (Friday). In the event the medical board concludes that the foetus can be aborted without any danger to the life of the petitioner (woman), the AIIMS shall carry out the abortion in terms of the petition…,” the bench said.

All our supreme court justices retire at 65. Most of them get a term of one year or two years. The selection process is apolitical since our independence. It was until the current rwnj bjp started to fiddle with it to appoint their rwnj’s to higher courts and there has been a stiff resistance from supreme court collegium, which selects higher court judges fro appointment by govt and has been bravely fighting them.

    Lol. So true.

  17. July 25, 2022 at 10:13 am

    Steve Benen:

“It was late last year Texas Republicans broke new legal ground with a different kind of abortion ban.
As we’ve discussed, the Lone Star State has effectively deputized random citizens, empowering them to go after those who have abortions after six weeks of pregnancy for $10,000, plus attorneys’ fees.
The result was, and is, a system that turned anti-abortion activists into bounty hunters.

Soon after, this seemed to give Democrats in California an idea:

Why not apply this same model to gun laws?

“If states can shield their laws from review by federal courts, then [California] will use that authority to help protect lives,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in December, adding, “If the most efficient way to keep these devastating weapons off our streets is to add the threat of private lawsuits, we should do just that.”

“The new gun law, set to go into effect in January,
will allow private people to sue anyone
    who imports, distributes, manufactures
or sells illegal firearms in California, such as assault weapons, .50 BMG rifles and so-called ghost guns.
The law requires a court to order $10,000 in damages
for each weapon used in an alleged violation, along with attorneys fees.
The bill was written so that if Texas’ law is nulled, California’s would similarly be invalidated.”

    • July 25, 2022 at 10:14 am

What’s more, there’s clearly a political and electoral dimension to this policy dispute.

      NBC News reported:
“If Texas can ban abortion and endanger lives, California can ban deadly weapons of war and save lives.
If Governor Abbott truly wants to protect the right to life, we urge him to follow California’s lead,”
      the ad reads.”

—-way to go Governor Newsom !!

President Biden created a record-shattering 6.6 million jobs in his first year in office.
600,000 of these jobs were in domestic manufacturing
Unemployment is at a historic low of 3.6%
Wages are rising at a record pace

The narration on the video said, “After years of Republican failure, President Biden is rebuilding America’s infrastructure.”

“Biden inherited an unprecedented and difficult situation when he came into office.

His accomplishments have been extraordinary. Biden got the American Rescue Plan through Congress; without it, America would have faced a crippling recession.

Imagine the same inflation problem and being out of a job. That would be America’s future if Trump
      won a second term.

Inflation will end, and what will be left behind is an incredible economy,

“Repent now and accept Jesus Christ into your heart. Every knee will bow, yours included.”
“That was the response from Andrew Torba, the founder of the social media site Gab, to a HuffPost reporter who wrote last week about Doug Mastriano’s gubernatorial campaign paying the site $5,000 for consulting services.”
“We’re taking back this country for the glory of God and there’s absolutely nothing you can do to stop us,” Torba wrote to reporter Christopher Mathias.

The Israel Lobby’s New Campaign Playbook
Israel advocacy groups have developed strategies to raise huge sums for their candidates by appealing to corporate interests.

    “TO UNDERSTAND THE FINANCIAL ASSAULT
that pro-Israel groups unleashed last year in Ohio, and have now expanded to the entire country, it helps to
    start in 2019…” (excerpts):

“Democrats,” declared CNN, “may be approaching a turning point on Israel.”
To ensure that turning point didn’t come, the pro-Israel establishment realized it needed a new architecture. Despite its name, AIPAC had never created a political action committee to directly give money to candidates. Instead, donors close to the organization established their own PACs, whose giving reflected AIPAC’s priorities.”

“But a group of donors and strategists with close ties to AIPAC provided a solution:
the creation of DMFI, which aimed to rebrand unconditional support for Israel as a Democratic cause….”

“But the new pro-Israel groups proved their worth the following year by toppling Nina Turner in Ohio. Their victory opened the floodgates…”

“What AIPAC and its allies have recognized is not just the power of immense campaign spending,
but the power of immense campaign spending in open Democratic congressional primaries.”

    Much more from Peter Beinart:

    • July 26, 2022 at 2:45 pm

“You’re not going to make those Democracy Alliance donors Israel-Palestine donors,”
notes the progressive strategist. “You need to say AIPAC is in opposition to their larger goals.”

“One day, hopefully, large numbers of Democrats will cast their votes, and direct their contributions,
in defense of Palestinian rights. Until then, progressives need to convince Democrats that candidates hostile to Palestinian dignity and freedom can’t be trusted to protect dignity and freedom in America either. ”

My tribute, a couple years ago, to what this good man taught us about “good trouble.”

    ***

Remembering U.S. Rep. John R. Lewis

    The boy from Troy
    Whose Mother no doubt
Did not want him to go
    Traveled to the bridge
So long ago, so long ago

    He marched with Dr. King
And spoke at the podium before him
They had to tone down his words
Because he spoke the harsh truth
And while he spoke the truth
    He learned so well
    And taught others
And I’m guessing for his Mother
    To tone down the words
    Forgive the others
    Make his impassioned plea
    Make it a learning event
    On the road to Congress
    Where he spent long years
    And became its conscience
    Educated more youthful soldiers
    Boys and girls from Troy
    And everywhere

    Never to be taken down
And told not to be so harsh
    Again.
    Because he found his voice
    He found his voice.

Today he is driven in a hearse
    Through the streets of Washington
    To pay respects at the
    National Museum of African American
    History and Culture
That he worked to achieve and the
    Lincoln Memorial and
    Black Lives Matter Plaza and
    the U.S. Capitol
And be driven nearby the souls who
    Loved him
    Some waiting in the streets.

    It’s touching
    It’s hard to watch.

I am so glad I got the chance
To witness the history from afar
I saw the boy from Troy speak
Before Dr. King at the podium
    I saw him visit
Black Lives Matter Plaza this year
    I saw him in Congress
    Sometimes during late-night hours
    When he was speaking up
    And standing up
    For his fellow Americans

    Gone but not forgotten
A treasure sent for only a little while
    Borrowed from his Mother
So he could dedicate his life to
Getting in good trouble and now
His life has space at the museum
    His life mattered
    Our hearts break
    Good trouble.

This one on PBO’s list waved at me:

“Small Things Like These” expands on the Irish novelist’s well-established talent for prizewinning short stories of keen social insight. Set during the 1985 Christmas season, the novel follows Bill Furlong,

Remarks by President Biden on COVID-19

“”Every person age five and over should get a booster shot.
If you’re over 50 years old, you should get two booster shots. I did. And if you have your boosters — one, if you are under 50; two, if you are over 50 — your odds of getting severely ill from COVID are very, very low.”

    • July 27, 2022 at 2:31 pm

“Here’s the bottom line: When my predecessor got COVID, he had to get helicoptered to Walter Reed Medical Center. He was severely ill. Thankfully, he recovered. When I got COVID, I worked from upstairs of the White House — in the offices upstairs — and — for the — that five-day period.”

there’s a lot of good news…but even comedy talk show hosts spend their time harping on about polls, making ageist remarks, ignoring all the amazing economic news and changing landscape. If they really want to stop Fascism they will have to do better – my response now is to turn off the tv.

Gen Z activist’s clapback to Matt Gaetz? Raising over $330K for abortion access after trolling her,

“Gen Z activist Olivia Julianna has raised over $330,000 for abortion access after being targeted by Matt Gaetz, using his attack as the fuel for her successful fundraising campaign. The teen activist joins Joy Reid on the fight for reproductive rights and abortion access, and how people are organizing to battle brutal, Republican anti-abortion policies.”

Dear Millennials: I’m Sorry We Didn’t Stop Them
Your generation today holds only 4.6% of the nation’s wealth and you’re most likely struggling to own a home & are deeply in debt.

“Dear millennials: back in the 1980s a lot of us worked like hell to try to stop the Reagan revolution. We failed. This may be our last chance to save American democracy and the American middle-class.”

    Yes, you read that right. Boomers in their 30s owned 21.3 of the nation’s wealth;
Millennials in their 30s today own 4.6% of the nation’s wealth.

What happened? In a word, Republicans.”

for the American people. Progress doesn’t always happen all at once, but it does happen – and this is what it looks like.”

“Then President Biden and Democrats in Congress announced a deal that will fight inflation by reducing the cost of prescription drugs, cutting the deficit, and making the biggest investments in history to boost clean energy and tackle the climate crisis.”

“This has been a big week for the Biden Administration and Democrats in Congress. First, Congress is on track

Remarks by President Biden on the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022

    JULY 28, 2022

    State Dining Room

“THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon. Yesterday, I spoke with both Senator Schumer and Manchin and offered my support for a historic agreement to fight inflation and lower costs for American families. It’s called the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Some of you will see a lot of similarities between the beginning — (laughs) — of the Build Back Better initiative. It’s not all of it, but we’ve moved a long way.”

Progressive leaders like Senator Elizabeth Warren said, quote, this bill — “This is a bill that truly is about fighting inflation, bringing down the cost for families, and putting our country on a sounder economic footing.”

    Here’s how it works:

  71. July 28, 2022 at 4:49 pm

President Biden: “But let me just give you what the facts are in terms of the state of the economy:

Number one, we have a record job market of — record unemployment of 3.6 percent today. We’ve created 9 million new jobs so far, just since I’ve become President.

Businesses are investing in America at record rates — at record rates. Foreign businesses like SK and others are investing in America hundreds of millions and trillions of dollars, sum total.

A hundred billion dollars in semiconductor investments already announced by Intel, Samsung, and Texas Instruments. More than $100 billion in electric vehicle battery investments by Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Tesla, and more.

And just last week, it had — SK corporation of the Republic of Korea announced $22 billion in new investment in semiconductor batteries, chargers, and medical devices, creating another 16,000 jobs here in America.

And this is powering the strongest rebound in American manufacturing in over three decades, creating 613,000 — 613,000 manufacturing jobs.

Passing the CHIPS bill is going to put another $72 billion for incentives and tax credits to expand semiconductor production. And the Inflation Reduction Act will add another $370 billion in clean energy tax credits in reconciliation, including incentives to accelerate domestic production of solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and critical materials processing.

That doesn’t sound like a recession to me.”
