It’s wonderful that the great Nelson Mandela has a day to commemorate his life. May he continue to R.I.P.

Good evening PKayden. Good evening TODVille. It’s been a long time since I posted my usual salutation. I pray everybody is fine.

My cancer has returned and sent me to another treatment which does strange things to my usual disposition. But I keep with the news from the Twilight Zone and finds myself shocked over and over. I am now waiting for Thursday’s finale of Season 1. What a chapter in our history!

      Have a great evening.

    11 February 1990

“Nelson Mandela’s address at Cape Town City Hall on the day of his release from prison is a symbol of a new era in South Africa. Millions of people around the world had campaigned for his release for decades, and were finally able to watch him walk out of Victor Verster Prison and give his first address…”

    imo,

So you know how there’s a move in Congress to nail Trump for manslaughter, because he incited a violent attack
on our U.S. Capitol and 5 people died.

How about 1100 people died from the extreme heat in Spain and Portugal over the last few days.

By blocking Senate climate action MANCHIN is guaranteeing millions of painful deaths now and in the future,
    on a global scale.

Just stopped by to say hello and check in on everyone:) Thank you, Nerdy…always keeping the home fires burning and keeping this refuge. I have just a couple weeks of vacation left and then it’s back to school. Honestly,
I don’t want to go back. For the first time ever in over 20 years.. I really am struggling to get excited about a new school year. The retirement clock is ticking…

Hello df, (Still think of you as ‘desert flower.’ 🙂 I cannot imagine having to return to the classroom. I heard last night on our local news that our country is short 128 teaching positions and school begins August 8. Because I subbed here many years ago, I get emails frequently to sub. There’s a statewide program to try to get retired teachers to come back into the classroom. Don’t think there will be many takers.

Hey stranger:) I’m guessing you meant your county, because I’m guessing that the country has way more open positions:) Anyway, so many issues to deal with over and above teaching the kids… it all just feels so heavy. Hope all is well with you and the family.

    (Sounds familiar…..?)

Putin Aims to Shape a New Generation of Supporters, Through Schools
Sweeping changes in the curriculum will soon cast the Russian president as a pivotal historical figure and mark an end of openness to the West.

“Starting in first grade, students across Russia will soon sit through weekly classes featuring war movies and virtual tours through Crimea. They will be given a steady dose of lectures on topics like “the geopolitical situation” and “traditional values.” In addition to a regular flag-raising ceremony, they will be introduced to lessons celebrating Russia’s “rebirth” under President Vladimir V. Putin.

And, according to legislation signed into law by Mr. Putin on Thursday,
all Russian children will be encouraged to join a new patriotic youth movement in the likeness of the Soviet Union’s red-cravatted “Pioneers” — presided over by the president himself.”

“Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russian government’s attempts at imparting a state ideology to schoolchildren have proven unsuccessful, a senior Kremlin bureaucrat, Sergei Novikov, recently told thousands of Russian schoolteachers in an online workshop. But now, amid the war in Ukraine, Mr. Putin has made it clear that this needed to change, he said.

“We need to know how to infect them with our ideology,” Mr. Novikov said.
“Our ideological work is aimed at changing consciousness.”

“As the war in Ukraine approaches the five-month mark, the vast ambitions of his plans for the home front are coming into focus: a wholesale reprogramming of Russian society to end 30 years of openness to the West.”

    Dear Colleague to All Members
on Welcoming the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska to Speak to the Congress

    “Dear Colleague,
Tomorrow, the Congress will have the distinct honor to welcome the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska to speak to the Congress. As we do so, Putin’s heinous war in Ukraine wages on – and it continues to take a terrible toll on women and girls.

In the course of visits from Ukrainian leaders — from members of parliament to grassroots heroes — many of us have heard horrific stories about the brutal treatment of women and girls by Russian forces. Indeed, we have sufficient evidence of kidnappings and deportations into Russia, rape of women in front of family members and even rape of little girls.

When I have commented to some that it is outrageous and sickening that war produces such atrocities, I have been told these barbaric crimes are being directly ordered by Putin. Let me be clear: rape of children cannot be a weapon of war. It is a war crime!”
