Thread—please take a moment to read..

    The money line

Indeed, mass death works in the rightwingers’ favor. When an electorate is scared enough, it will stop turning to democracy to solve problems. It will turn to the party that promises to restore “law and order,” that is, rule by white power.

    President Biden tweeted:

“I’ve gotten to know George Floyd’s family over the years and I promised them that his name will not just become a hashtag. Today, I signed an Executive Order to deliver on that promise and enact the most significant police reform in decades.

    Here’s what it will do:

First, the Executive Order promotes accountability. It creates a new national law enforcement accountability database, strengthens pattern and practice investigations, and mandates all federal agents wear and activate body cameras while on patrol.

Second, the Executive Order raises standards. It bans chokeholds, restricts no-knock entries, and tightens use-of-force policies to emphasize de-escalation and the duty to intervene.

Third, it modernizes policing with new tools to screen and vet officers.

This Executive Order includes reforms that have long been talked about, but we’re finally implementing. By building public trust, we can strengthen public safety and we can more effectively fight rising crime in our communities.

We can show what’s possible when we work together.”

  16. May 26, 2022 at 12:24 am

Dug out my gun control rant from some years ago. I know. But I’m so fucking furious, I’m posting it around again.

Obviously any of the following proposals will take a lot of time and debate to accomplish in a national culture of dehumanized adoration of guns. There’s probably only a chance for some pieces of sane control being slowly enacted piece-meal and requiring much compromise on both sides. But DOING NOTHING is no longer acceptable to the majority of rational Americans. SOMETHING has to happen. There has to be change in this country to address the insanity of gun violence that is ending or ruining too many men, women and CHILDREN’S lives. For the following ideas, please remember: 1) The NRA and gun worshipping ammosexuals are against ALL controls. They won’t accept ANYTHING but unlimited ownership and access to all types of readily available INSTANT DEATH DEVICES (IDDs), 2) Everyone of the ideas below ALLOWS for continued private ownership of guns-YOU CAN KEEP YOUR GD GUNS!, and 3) If you are a gun owner, which of these measures would be ok with you? Seriously, just NOTHING, not one change to save lives? Reasonable regulations for registration, safety requirements and insurance for automobiles make sense, but NOTHING for IDDs?? Why would a sane, responsible gun owner be opposed to every single measure to improve gun safety? 33,000K+ gun deaths in America per year and rising. NO OTHER ADVANCED SOCIETY IN THE WORLD HAS THIS PROBLEM OR ANYTHING CLOSE TO IT.
    A few ideas:
    1. Strict criminal and psychiatric background checks for gun purchases with a 30 day waiting period. Dealers that violate have their licenses permanently revoked. Dealers found to be in willful violation face criminal charges and jail time.
    2. A permanent ban on all gun show sales, and private party sales. Sales will only happen through closely regulated and monitored dealers.
    3. Registration of all guns by owners with annual renewal required; stiff penalties for violations.
    4. Owners required to carry $500,000 liability insurance for each gun; stiff penalties for violations. Insurance is required on automobiles, why not something as deadly as IDDs?
    5. An immediate ban on private ownership of military weapons and ammunition.
    6. Strict and sane limits on the number of guns that can be purchased and possessed by each person.
    7. Freeze on all manufacture of guns until the manufacturer retools to produce only guns with valid and approved security features (biometric lock-outs etc.).
    8. Freeze on all manufacture of ammunition until manufacturers re-tool to produce only traceable ammunition.
    9. Strict and sane limits on the amount of ammunition per gun that can be purchased and possessed.
    10. A massive national gun and ammunition buy-back program with collected guns and ammunition going for destruction within 30 days. I’d happily pay more taxes for years for that program! This was done on a large scale and very successfully in Australia.
    11. A sustained and multi-faceted national education program on the inherent danger of guns. It would emphasize the enormous toll of lost and ruined lives and the virtues of evolving as a society away from gun ownership. Stress how other advanced societies don’t have this problem.
Proponents of unlimited ownership and access to guns love to trot out the old cliché about the person kills not the gun AND we only need to address mental illness. But the quantum leap in the level and frequency of murder and MASS MURDER in America is directly connected to the obscene availability of guns. INSTANT DEATH DEVICES. I am ALL FOR a better system of mental health recognition and treatments. But we must work on all angles of this problem that OTHER ADVANCED SOCIETIES DO NOT HAVE. The insane mega-tons of privately owned guns in this country has ZERO beneficial effects and disastrous levels of destructive effects.

Police were urged to charge into a deadly school shooting in Texas by onlookers, witnesses say, with one suggesting he considered doing so himself as he became frustrated.

Texas officials say gunman Salvador Ramos was inside the school in Uvalde for up to an hour before he was killed.

Nineteen children and two adults died, while 17 others were injured.

Eyewitness Juan Carranza told the Associated Press that women shouted at officers to “go in there”.

But the 24-year-old, who witnessed the scene at the Robb Elementary School from outside his house, said police did not enter.

Javier Cazares, whose daughter was killed in the attack, told the news agency he suggested running in with other onlookers because the police “weren’t doing anything”.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-61588274

Armed policemen were too chickenshit to even enter the school and yet the rethugs talking point is arm the teachers.

    • May 26, 2022 at 11:11 am

Cannot ignore this…the pretense about ‘more guns’ in a deadly situation, and particularly schools where the right would like to arm our educators must be exposed.

“We’re also angry for them,” he continued. “Nearly ten years after Sandy Hook—and ten days after Buffalo—our country is paralyzed, not by fear, but by a gun lobby and a political party that have shown no willingness to act in any way that might help prevent these tragedies.”

but those whose stood with the NRA

We know their campaign theme meme words are carefully manufactured, we recently had the ‘gr…m’ word.

Unlike the search and destroy right wing, children are tender, their minds are supple, evolving. Relative reality is constantly changing, impermanent, not fixed, tough, or hard. Words matter. Let’s not allow Abbot, De Santis and the hard cases to create the intractable and terrifying school environment (and world) they want. They want school to be Hard to learn in and Hard to teach in.

Unlike the countless other mass shootings
this country sacrifices at the altar of the 2nd Amendment,
Uvalde has unique circumstances such that many people directly involved in the matter,
    parents, police, and other officials
were at the school property minutes after the shooter
    and, somehow,
were forced to stand outside the property
    while lives were being taken
