Insiders who attended events at Downing Street during lockdown have told the BBC how staff crowded together, sat on each other’s laps and how party debris was left out overnight.
For the first time, insiders who were at some of the events have told BBC Panorama in detail what they saw.
They describe arriving for work the morning after a get-together to find bottles lying around parts of the building, bins overflowing with rubbish and empties left on the table.
They also tell of events with dozens of staff crowded together, and parties going so late that, on occasion, some ended up staying in Downing Street all night.
And they say staff mocked others who tried to stop what was going on.
The insiders admit that events were routine. “They were every week,” one says. “The event invites for Friday press office drinks were just nailed into the diary.”
The invitation was known as “WTF” – meaning “Wine-Time Friday” and a reference to a less polite acronym.
The drinks were often scheduled in No 10 for 4pm. Sources say Friday drinks had been a tradition in Whitehall for some time.
But drinking wasn’t limited to Fridays. One former official describes turning up at work in No 10 often to find “A mess! There were bottles, empties, rubbish – in the bin, but overflowing – or indeed sometimes left on the table.”

Opinion: Want to Stop Inflation? Fighting for Global Democracy is the Answer
“Global democracy creates the stable relationships and economic cooperation necessary to support the needs of the global population and generate political stability so we are not subject to the political and economic disruptions—which are deadly, inimical to human life—of one man’s idiosyncratic whims.
And yet we hear how inflation worries may cause Americans to vote for autocracy,
for Republican control of Congress (see here and here),
which means less rights,
less ability to vote and have a say in the political process,
and less economic democracy,
given Republicans have shown no tendency or desire to pass legislation to serve working-class and middle-class Americans.
During World War II, Americans endured rationing and made sacrifices for both the national and global good—
for global democracy. If we want to end inflation,
we have to recognize how this dynamic is bound up in assaults on democracy around the globe and at home.”

BREAKING: Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting:
– 14 students, 1 teacher killed, per governor Gov. Abbott – Suspect, local 18-year-old high school student, is dead – Suspect also shot his grandmother
If Ted Cruz and Greg Abbott really cared about the children who were killed in Texas today, they would CANCEL their speaking gigs at the NRA conference in Houston this coming Friday.
effing ‘founding fathers’ sure did a number on their own country by inserting 1st and 2nd poison pills. From assassination of their own presidents to callous cowardly murder of their own innocent kids in schools i s on basically them.
Back in the 1950s when I was in 5th grade in elementary school (yep, I’m that old), we had air raid drills where we’d take our leather book bags with us into the hallway and get on the floor hugging the wall with the book bag over our faces, in case “the dirty rotten commies” were shelling our school from the air. Like that would have saved us, but it was our only option.
I have never forgotten that, to this day. And neither will today’s school kids, having to go through any of these shootings, ever forget their trauma.
insane how the only notable change since Sandy Hook is that kids are now formally trained to hide, barricade doors, fight, or run for their lives. that was the solution. to literally put the responsibility on them to figure it out and wish them luck.
When the Senate voted on universal background checks after Sandy Hook, as I calculated at the time, the Senators voting for the bill represented 194 million people, while the opponents represented only 118 million. Pretty decisive. But the filibuster allowed the 118m to prevail.

Fingers crossed that it happens. More importantly, dems better turnout in huge numbers like they did two years ago so that these motherfuckers don’t have a chance to yell voter fraud.
Turnout in Georgia is through the roof. In 2018, competitive GOV primary 607K votes; now = 1.18M. On Dem side, competitive GOV primary in ‘18= 555K votes; now in non-competitive primary, Abrams gets 708K votes.
So effing dems didn’t turnout in big numbers in 2018 which could have ensured a Stacey double term by now? Dems are their own worst enemies. We are still half a mil votes short in 2022.
Ms Abrams 2019: “800,000 voters is emblematic of who wasn’t speaking up before. But what we call attention to are the 1.4 million-plus who were purged and the 53,000 who weren’t processed and the thousands who were given provisional ballots.”
Voter roll purges were just the start of the Kemp corruption. I remember voting machines missing, not working, long lines in non-white areas, you name it. She clearly won that race.

A waiting period and literally someone you know has to sign off on your mental state. My only concern is the nuts here who migrate up there.
Parents should never have to worry that watching our children walk onto a school bus or through the school’s front door may be the last time we see them.

Across the country, parents are putting their children to bed, reading stories, singing lullabies—and in the back of their minds, they’re worried about what might happen tomorrow after they drop their kids off at school, or take them to a grocery store or any other public space.
Latest: Uvalde gunman legally purchased two AR platform rifles at a local federal firearms licensee on May 17 and May 20, says Texas state Sen. John Whitmire. On May 18, the suspect purchased 375 rounds of ammunition. Inside the school, police found seven 30-round magazines.
How can one guy so much deathly weapons and ammo in such a short time. In India, you apply to local police citing valid reasons, no, hunting isn’t one and it’s illegal to hunt, it goes to distinct police, who will again question your motives and then it goes to a district judge, who will start all over again. After a few years, you will be denied the permit. A sane system.
imo,
How is Governor Abbottt not to blame? He had the balls to call this massacre “inconceivable”.
How is it inconceivable when he personally signed off on:
expanded access to guns,
lowered the age,
don’t need a license,
don’t need training,
or background checks.
Hold Abbott accountable for 21 years olds walking around with open carry without permits in his state.
Why do we let people like Abbot brainwash our kids to live in fear, as if guns are the answer to your problems. What is the big plan for our young people? Every gun is a hazard. Stop defending guns. You don’t think something can happen with your gun? Our peer nations value life. Let our children have a childhood.
In the wake of the latest horror, Democrats should tell voters clearly that if they deliver two more Democratic senators, they will suspend the filibuster and pass new gun safety measures. Tell voters that they have recourse, and be *specific* about it:https://t.co/EJ5cSCOpDW

“We have to admit that we love our guns more than we love our children.”

Many of us have children and relatives who teach in school. Let them live.
Dumb insane haters cannot be allowed to create for us the Everywhere War future they seek.
The constant nagging fear. How is this freedom?
What a terrible way to live.
Number one cause of childhood death in America is by the gun.
Indeed.
Bobfr’s point.
Especially, the latter.
America: 4% of world population with 42% of its firearms.
Apparently comes with the right to threaten to get whatever it is you want.
Yup. Make a promise and fulfill it.

Posting this again, as Jim recovers the last 10 years of his long-form commentaries and views on gun violence in America. Here it all is, well set out and impossible to NOT read, every word, then spread it, because too many have become hardened and accepting of the inexcusable and unforgivable deaths, we CAN change this, Yes We Can
And we had better do it NOW
💙🕊💛
imho,
Paraphrasing Michael Moore to Chris Hayes:
“We have to admit that we love our guns more than we love our children.”
“Those who say and do nothing…those more concerned about preserving the filibuster so we can’t get anything passed.”
“These were legally purchased guns by a legal adult….i don’t think we want to fix it.”
“We refuse to acknowledge the violence, the genocide of native peoples, the guns to the backs of slaves who built this country. The original sins have a gun behind them.”
“We need drastic action here, a moratorium on gun sales. But who will say it is time to repeal the 2nd amendment?”
“How could the Founding Fathers know about the bullet?
It was invented later, and did not exist in 1830s.”
“We need hard core gun reform, (too late) for the “sensible stuff” now.”
“A massacre happened the day after Buffalo in Orange County.
There is no way to stop next week’s mass murder.”
“But 75 years after Germans were the most violent killers, they are the most peaceful. Same with Japan.
Make guns the (successful action we took on) cigarettes of the 21st century.”
New post.
