The Liberal Party has wasted no time capitalising on news that a boat has been stopped while allegedly trying to illegally reach Australia.
The party’s New South Wales (NSW) branch has sent scores of voters a text reporting the news and linking to instructions on how to vote for the party.
That’s angered many people.
Gosford resident Andrew Dunk is one of them. He lives in the marginal Central Coast seat of Robertson and received the text this afternoon.
“It’s quite disturbing to see national security politicised in this manner, especially on polling day,” he told the BBC.
“It seems like a desperate last-minute plea to swing voters.”
Voters have also taken to social media to share their disdain, with Greens Leader Adam Bandt slamming the texts as a “cynical and disgusting stunt”.
The country’s election watchdog says it is aware of the texts, but that they do not breach election rules.
