From fighting the Nazis with the Soviets, to fleeing from Putin’s war.

“When Arkady Perchenko was 11 years old he fought alongside the Soviet Army,
as part of the local resistance against the Nazis.

At the age of 92, he was forced to leave his home in Ukraine to escape from Russian forces.
From safety in Israel, Arkady has been talking to the BBC about his view of both wars.”

    ‘We cannot go back’:
People share their stories of abortion and access

    We asked our readers:
How has getting an abortion — or deciding not to — changed your life? Here’s what they said.

“My wife and I have three beautiful children. However, that would not be without access to abortion. [With] an ectopic pregnancy, it was devastating that we had to choose one life over another. But we did … and to our surprise the doctor recommended continuing to try. After the elective abortion, we had two more healthy babies.”

“The abortion I had was significant because it wasn’t. It didn’t disrupt my life. It didn’t financially devastate me. I was surrounded by support. I had the right to choose and the accessibility afforded by a liberal state.”

“I got pregnant when I was 15 in 1977. I was not prepared to be a mother. Fortunately my mother, who was not totally in favor of abortion, but knew I was not mature enough to be a mother, took me to Minneapolis for a safe abortion. I would not have the life I now have if I would have been forced to have a baby at that age.”

—–thx for sharing so many important stories.

    U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen
warned that eliminating women’s access to abortion
would have ‘very damaging effects’ on the U.S. economy, keeping some women from completing their educations
and reducing their lifetime earnings potential and participation in the labor force.

Senate Republicans and Democrat Joe Manchin

teamed up to block the advancement of legislation that would federally codify abortion rights.

Senator Debbie Stabenow to Alician Menendez yesterday:

“Tomorrow there will be the vote…and then we will go forward and continue to shine a light on what is happening across this country. All the way to November, when we have an opportunity to change it. By electing a bigger majority in the Democratic Senate, and keeping the US House and electing great people across the country.”

    • May 11, 2022 at 4:59 pm

      Sen. Stabenow:
“What I want to keep focus on is what has really brought us here.
Republicans for years. Mitch McConnell for years, and years, and years working hard to set up this situation. Right wing members of the United States Supreme Court, putting others on the federal benches that are right wing. Supporting those in state legislatures where Republicans have been chipping away at our freedoms now for years.

I mean there’s no mistake about it.
We are here because of the Republican party and the fact that they’re willing to say,
      that THEY as politicians
      should be making OUR decisions
about what we’re going to do
in terms of our most intimate reproductive decisions.

And so I find that incredibly outrageous.
And 50 years of settled law should be enough for all of us in the United States.
And tomorrow (vote today) is an accumulation of what the republicans have been doing for years.”

    • May 11, 2022 at 5:00 pm

      Sen Stabenow:
““Disproportionately women of color are affected by this because of their circumstances, their lack of other kinds of choices.”

“I watched what happened before Roe. And what happened when we were told as a country that in America, that we have a right to privacy, that we have the freedom to decide our most intimate health care decisions.”

    • May 11, 2022 at 5:04 pm

      Sen. Stabenow:
“We all know of situations of someone being raped, or incest, a 12 or 14 year old.

      Why in the world
      should government,
should politicians step in front of the family,
step in front of the woman with her faith,
      her doctor, her family,
and say that politicians should make those decisions,
that Mitch McConnell should make those decisions,
      other Republicans
      should make those decisions?
      Really,
I mean that is really quite extraordinary.
That is the fundamental question that we’re talking about is who decides, who decides.”

  12. May 11, 2022 at 6:19 pm

    imo,

    manchin and gop vote No.

After warbling on about big government and individual rights, this Mickey Mouse operation
wants to sit around your living space, your doctor’s office, and dictate the how and what about your family.

This includes men and their family choices – what say they about it all?

Manchin and GOP openly don’t care about your well being or your privacy.

btw, trump went overboard to create a culture of cruelty towards infants, children, teens, and got away with it. Pls prepare for the worst by protecting and putting them front and center in every possible way now.

    U.S. Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen:

Eliminating abortion access would have a damaging effect on the economy, Yellen says

“I believe eliminating the right of women to make decisions about when and whether to have children would have very damaging effects on the economy and set women back decades,” Yellen said in response to a question while testifying before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday.

She went on to address the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision directly, stating that “access to reproductive health care including abortion helped lead to increased labor force participation. It enabled many women to finish school.
That increased their earning potential. It allowed women to plan and balance their families and careers.”

    (But don’t look now…)

A GOP senator (MT) likened ‘pre-born’ human beings to sea turtle eggs while arguing against a Democrat-led
    abortion rights bill

“Sen. Steve Daines later tweeted claiming that an “unhatched sea turtle would have more protections than an unborn human baby” if Roe v. Wade were to be codified into law.

“Why do we have laws in place that protect the eggs of a sea turtle or the eggs of eagles? Because when you destroy an egg, you’re killing a pre-born baby sea turtle or a pre-born baby eagle,” said Daines, while speaking against the bill on the Senate floor.

“Yet when it comes to a pre-born human baby, rather than a sea turtle, that baby would be stripped of all protections in all 50 states under the Democrats’ bill we’ll be voting on tomorrow,” he added. “Is that the America that the left wants?”

Daines made his speech while standing next to a poster displaying sea turtles and a row of babies.”

    • May 12, 2022 at 10:05 am

“Among other things, because sea turtles and eagles don’t have constitutional rights as equal citizens of the United States,” tweeted Democratic strategist Emmy Bengtson.
“But hey, apparently women don’t either.”

    • May 12, 2022 at 10:12 am

      imo,
Daines conflating wildlife management with women’s rights using visual aids.
Ask him about regulating men’s bodies?
Let’s say women passed a law saying all men had to have a vasectomy. Suddenly it would be about men’s rights and the preservation of every sperm as a “pre-born human being”.
