Biden Has Already Done More for Rural America Than Trump Ever Did

“In under two years in office, President Biden has done more for places like Guthrie County and other parts of rural America than Mr. Trump ever did. The rural economy is stronger, wages are higher and infrastructure projects are popping up all over.

Mr. Biden and his fellow Democrats are responsible for many of the improvements and for bringing back a sense of stability. For the midterms, they should run on these successes — the American Rescue Plan, the infrastructure bill. And they should run on why they have worked: Democrats should run on Democratic values.”

Saw interview…Montana Senator Tester and Lawrence O’Donnell. He describes pressing for bipartisan legislation to help farmers and consumers.
Emphasizes we must ttalk more about what the Biden Administration has accomplished through Congress,
including the serious investments in rural America in the American Rescue Plan. “
Joe said here is money for start ups.”
Stresses the importance of continuing to make deals and pass bills.
“Rural America is drying up…mass exodus of the land”.

    Commentary:
Why Brittney Griner was in Russia, and what it says about women’s sports in the U.S.

    By Lindsay Kagawa Colas

“I woke up to the phone ringing just after 5 a.m. in Portland. My colleague was calling from the East Coast.
“Lindz, it’s BG. She’s been taken into custody at the airport. She has her phone and can text.” Brittney Griner, who had spent several WNBA offseasons starring for UMMC Ekaterinburg, an elite Russian basketball club team, had been traveling back to Ekaterinburg from the U.S., connecting in Moscow when she was detained. She was now in the custody of Russian officials at the airport and, for the next several hours, I tracked her location on my phone and continued texting her, trying to stay with her as long as I could.”

Elon Musk Isn’t Buying Twitter to Defend Free Speech
Business moguls tend to be big on protecting speech, right until it hurts their bottom line.

    By Adam Serwer

    (excerpt)
“For those who are not terminally online, a little explanation is in order.
Compared to the big social media giants, Twitter is a relatively small but influential social network because it is used by many people who are relatively important to political discourse. Although the moderation policies of a private company don’t implicate traditional questions of free speech—that is, state restriction of speech—Twitter’s policies have played a prominent role in arguments about “free speech” online, that is, how platforms decide
    what they want to host.

When people talk about free speech in this more colloquial context,
what they mean is that certain entities may be so powerful that their coercive potential mimics or approaches that of the state. The problem is that when private actors are involved, there’s no clear line between one person’s free speech and another’s: A private platform can also decide not to host you if it wants, and that is also an exercise of speech. Right-wing demands for a political purge of Twitter employees indicate just how sincerely conservatives take this secondary understanding as a matter of principle rather than rhetoric.

The fight over Twitter’s future is not really about free speech, but the political agenda the platform
may end up serving. As Americans are more and more reliant on a shrinking number of wealthy individuals and companies for services, conservatives believe having a sympathetic billionaire acquire Twitter means one less large or influential corporation the Republican Party needs to strongarm into serving its purposes. Whatever Musk ends up doing, this possibility is what the right is actually celebrating. “Free speech” is a disingenuous attempt to frame what is ultimately a political conflict over Twitter’s usage as a neutral question about civil liberties,
but the outcome conservatives are hoping for is one in which conservative speech on the platform is favored
    and liberal speech disfavored.

—from Serwer discussion with Hayes…it’s about social media platforms using power to serve GOP,
whose only problem is if the corporate power isn’t being used to further THEIR ends = as long as the corporation is doing what they want when they say to do it, no problem in their view.
‘GOP mafia bosses will come after you if you don’t do as we say’.

“Senator Elizabeth Warren joins Ari Melber to discuss the regulation of big tech
after billionaire Elon Musk bought out Twitter. Warren opens up about what Congress can do to better regulate big tech, what Musk’s purchase of Twitter means for democracy, and the need for more competition in the sector. Warren also shares her thoughts on the GOP backing Musk’s buyout of the social media platform.”

    Been thinkin’ about student loans:

    imo,
    A trumpQ pro-Putin, pro-fascist president could sign
a National Emergency Act by Executive Order
    giving them the enhanced power
    to freeze American assets.

    Therefore,
a trumpQ president could garnish the bank accounts of young people with outstanding student loans.

Is why we must get on and cancel all student loans.

  55. April 29, 2022 at 12:15 pm

① A great deal of commentary about Elon Musk taking over Twitter has an eerie panglossian quality to It, reminiscent of earlier complacency about obvious dangers like the Iraq war, Fox News, Donald Trump,
    and COVID-19

② The danger becomes more obvious when you understand how right-wing propaganda operates
and how giddy its purveyors are about the Musk news

③ And when you start thinking like the kind of greedy, unethical authoritarians who’ve run roughshod through American and global politics these last few years, it’s easy to imagine some real nightmare scenarios
    coming to pass

    The powwow trail returns.
After two dark years, the Gathering of Nations returns as an in-person event.

“That follows the successful completion of Denver March Powwow last month, and the Crow Fair last July.
