    Good Afternoon TODVille.

“The essence of this place, what put Silicon Valley on the map, is a spirit of innovation.
That’s what led to the globally integrated internet, and all its remarkable applications. What we’ve now learned is the product has some design flaws. There are some bugs in the software. We don’t have to just leave it like that. Through the same spirit of innovation. We can make it better.
So I want to make some general suggestions for what that work might look like.
But before I do, let me offer a few stipulations so we don’t get bogged down in some well-worn, not always productive arguments.”

    PBO:

“People like Putin and Steve Bannon, for that matter, understand it’s not necessary for people to believe this information in order to weaken democratic institutions. You just have to flood a country’s public square with enough raw sewage. You just have to raise enough questions, spread enough dirt, plant enough conspiracy theorizing that citizens no longer know what to believe.

Once they lose trust in their leaders, in mainstream media, in political institutions, in each other, in the possibility of truth, the game’s won. And as Putin discovered leading up to the 2016 election, our own social media platforms are well designed to support such a mission, such a project.

Russians could study and manipulate patterns in the engagement ranking system on a Facebook or YouTube. And as a result, Russian state sponsored trolls could almost guarantee that whatever disinformation they put out there would reach millions of Americans. And that the more inflammatory the story, the quicker it spread.”

Pence Refusing to Get in Secret Service Car on Jan. 6 ‘Chilling’: Raskin

    BY THOMAS KIKA

Former Vice President Mike Pence’s refusal to get into a Secret Service vehicle during the January 6 Capitol riot is being called “chilling” as the House select committee prepares to reveal its findings sometime before the end of the year.

After being taken to an undisclosed portion of the Capitol during the riot, Pence’s Secret Service agents, whom Raskin suspected were reporting directly to Trump’s security detail, asked him to enter an armored limousine. The intent, some have theorized, was to drive Pence away from the building, preventing him from certifying the election results, after he had signaled his unwillingness to go against his duties and keep Trump in power.

“[Pence] uttered what I think are the six most chilling words of this entire thing I’ve seen so far:
‘I’m not getting in that car,'” Raskin said.
“He knew exactly what this inside coup they had planned for was going to do.”

“This was not a coup directed at the president,” the congressman said. “It was a coup directed by the president against the vice president and against the Congress.”

Statement by President Joe Biden on Keeping our Promise to Veterans Suffering from Toxic Environmental Exposures

    APRIL 25, 2022

America’s veterans are the best of us. I’ve always believed that we have a sacred obligation to equip all those we send into harm’s way and to care for them and their families when they come home. That’s especially true for veterans suffering the visible and invisible wounds of war, whether they were injured in combat or breathed in toxic smoke from burn pits on base. We can and must do more to address the harms that come from hazardous exposures, which have gone unaddressed for far too long.

We learned a horrible lesson after Vietnam, when the harmful effects of exposure to Agent Orange sometimes took years to manifest, and too many veterans were left unable to access the care they needed. I refuse to repeat that mistake when it comes to the veterans of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In my State of the Union address, I announced that we would propose expanding disability and health benefits to veterans suffering from nine rare respiratory cancers. Today, the Department of Veterans Affairs is delivering on that promise and upholding that sacred obligation to the women and men who have worn the uniform of our country. This new action is guided by science and driven by a desire to ensure that our nation’s veterans receive timely access to the benefits and services they deserve.

Supporting our veterans is a critical part of the Unity Agenda I proposed for our nation. No matter where we live or who we voted for in the last election, we all agree that we should serve our veterans as well as they have served us. My Administration will continue to do everything in its power to support our nation’s veterans, and I urge Congress to pass bipartisan legislation to comprehensively address toxic exposures and further deliver the vital benefits our veterans have earned. I will sign it immediately.

germans finally decided move their ass.

    via beebs

As we’ve been reporting, defence ministers from Nato and European Union countries have been meeting today at the United States’ airbase in Ramstein, south-west Germany, to discuss providing more support to Ukraine.

A major policy shift was announced by the German government, which has authorised the supply of about 50 Gepard Flakpanzer anti-aircraft tanks.

Held in storage for the past decade, they will get technical upgrades before being shipped to Ukraine.

Germany has long had a policy of not shipping heavy weaponry to conflict zones, but its government has come under increasing pressure to provide more help to Kyiv.

Making the announcement, the country’s defence minister, Christine Lambrecht, said Germany would “look into all possibilities how we can further support Ukraine in its courageous and important fight for freedom and for peace”.

“A future of abundant, equitable speech terrifies people like Elon Musk.”
Anand Giridharadas (The.Ink) speaking to Joy Reid.

    Joy Reid:
“What does it mean for Elon Musk to PRIVATELY OWN the town square?”

    Anand Giridharas:
“Those people a hundred years ago did not own portals into a billion people’s minds in real time.
The nature of the technology is now such that
if now you are Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg or others,
it is not just owning a newspaper and owning the railroad, this and that.
It is specifically this particular kind of straw
    into the
    live consciousness
of a very large chunk of humanity at all times.

There’s studies that have shown that this power can be used to tilt elections
if someone would want to use it that way.
And so what you’re seeing right now and I called it ‘Winners Take All’ for a reason.
This is a winners take all playbook.

First you try to make money, that’s the kind of foundational overriding goal.
But if you just do that, you’re going to have regulatory pressure,
you’re going to have people mad at you at a certain point.
You’re going to have all kinds of problems.
And so what you do is you take the spoils of that money making,
and you buy political influence in Washington.
    You fund super pacs,
you fund things like the Federalist Society,
different approaches that you know well.

And then you start investing in rigging the discourse.
It’s not enough to just rig law and policy.
You want to rig the Discourse,
you want to make sure you control the terms on which people can talk back at you.”

    • April 26, 2022 at 5:29 pm

      Giridharas:
“I’m curious what are the safeguards preventing the world’s richest man?
I’m sure there are some, I’d love to hear what they are.
But this is truly the winners take all world, where as you said,
not just one form of power but every form of power
is used to purchase the next…”

      “Democracy itself is suffering.”

Anand Giridharadas, author “Winners Take All, The Elite Charade of Changing the World.”

  38. April 26, 2022 at 5:30 pm

    Joy Reid:
