Museums in Ukraine scrambling to protect historical artifacts during Russian invasion

“The destruction of these artifacts has been decried as an attack on democracy,
and amounts to a sort of cultural cleansing, said Jeremy Maron, a curator of genocide content at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg.”

“Putin views Ukraine not as an independent nation, but as a part of Russia that was stolen from Russian control. In his perspective, it seems like there is no such thing as Ukrainian culture, so the cultural artifacts are fake evidence of the fake Ukrainian culture,” Maron said.

Cultural bodies including UNESCO have condemned the attacks on cultural sites and the danger posed to museum workers. Ukraine is home to seven UNESCO world heritage sites, including the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, which contains unique 16th-century mosaics and frescoes, and Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a monastery founded in 1051.”

fyi, 5,000 museums in Ukraine. Fifteen in Kyiv, one of the most famous is the Pinchuk Art Center which has become a platform for Ukrainian and foreign artists for expressing their attitude to the world.

“Russian military forces burned down a history museum in Ivankiv, Ukraine,
in late February, the Kiev Independent reported. Among many other items, the museum reportedly was home to 25 pieces by folk artist Maria Prymachenko, a talent exalted for her intimate depictions of Ukrainians and colorful portraits of mythical creatures; her work has even been spotlighted on postage stamps. Now, those 25 paintings are lost forever.”

      Nelson:
“We are at a crossroads, and we have to choose what type of multiracial, multiethnic democracy we will be because we will certainly be a multiracial, multiethnic society. We either strengthen the structures that ensure we are committed to the ideals in our Constitution, or we can descend into anarchy and authoritarianism—those are the choices before us. I have faith we will continue to push this country to be a better version of itself despite itself. One of the first items on that agenda is to confront racism in America. It’s in the country’s DNA. We see that with the proliferation of anti-truth bills, anti-voter bills, and anti-protest bills. It’s a trifecta of assault on our democracy. I remain hopeful because I see the resilience of communities that bounce back after being shut out and written out of laws and positions of power. We can still find a way and use the tools at our disposal to push back. That’s what we’re here to do—to create a different vision for what our future holds.”

Speaking of catching up on sleep—when it comes to managing the personal and the professional, what lessons do you have for balancing work and life?

      [Both women laugh.]
      Ifill: Go on, Janai!
Nelson: Listen, that’s the one lesson you didn’t impart.
      [More laughter.]

      Ifill:
Listen, listen, here’s what I got: I think we all have done some recalibration since COVID.
Many of us have learned to turn it off. For the first few years of this job, I worked 16 hours a day, six days a week, and I loved it. But it takes its toll. It’s not sustainable. That ability to turn off is critical.
Learning to create space for yourself is important. So I no longer work on Saturdays. I shut down at 10 p.m. There are exceptions that make it impossible to shut down: Some tragedy is happening, some police killing, something’s happening in Congress, or in a community somewhere that needs our help. I also built in exercise time—from the very beginning, that has been nonnegotiable. With the strong staff we’ve built over the years, I believe Janai is in an excellent position to do all of this. She will need to reserve her energy. She’s the leader, and there are things that can’t be offloaded to anyone else. She’s also the inspiration for staff, the community, and the country—so part of the job is preserving your energy, optimism, inspiration, and health.

      Nelson:
I agree. There has to be a piece of you that’s out of touch, that’s for you. One that you hold sacred.

Remarks at Annual Women’s History Month Event Honoring Billie Jean King and Women Athletes

“As we are gathered here today, our thoughts are, of course, with the people of the Ukraine.
We must be prayerful, and we must be helpful. And we will have legislation on the Floor today to do just that. We especially salute the brave Ukrainian women fighting to defend their democracy and protect their families.

At the same time, let us pray for the WNBA star Brittney Griner, right there.
There’s her picture – she’s in the orange shirt. She’s visiting us with our colleague, Congressman Stanton of Arizona. She was playing for the Phoenix team when she visited the Capitol, recently. She is now in prison, being detained by the Russians. We want her to know that we are thinking of her and praying for her, and we want the Russians to know that, too. Congress and the country are sending our prayers to her, her wife and her family.

With this reception, we celebrate all women athletes who have blazed trails for our daughters and granddaughters. So let us – and many of them are live, listening live stream because of limitations COVID provides, presents to us.”

Nearly 1,600 Mariupol civilians killed during Russian invasion, city council says

In a message posted to its Telegram account, the council wrote that
“1,582 peaceful Mariupol residents” were killed by Russian forces during a 12-day period in which the Russians surrounded and shelled the city.

The city council’s message came after Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko said the city was going through “Armageddon” and had faced “two days of hell,” including a strike that tore through a maternity hospital Wednesday, killing at least three people and injuring 17. Boychenko said in a video Thursday that planes struck residential areas in the city every 30 minutes, “killing civilians: old people, women, children.”

The Mariupol city council told The Post in a Thursday statement that 43 people have been buried in what it described as the city’s first mass grave in the conflict. Footage from the Associated Press showed men wrapping bodies in shrouds or body bags and placing them in a trench.

The destruction this week led the city council to post a message to Russian forces Friday.
“Every occupier will burn in hell,” the council wrote. “We will never forget and will never forgive this crime against humanity, against Ukraine, against Mariupol!”

    FACT CHECK

Republicans Wrongly Blame Biden for Rising Gas Prices
They have pointed to the Biden administration’s policies on the Keystone XL pipeline and certain oil and gas leases, which have had little impact on prices.

“Mr. Biden warned that his ban on imports of Russian oil, gas and coal, announced on Tuesday as a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, would cause gas prices to rise further. High costs are expected to last as long as the confrontation does.

While Republican lawmakers supported the ban, they asserted that the pain at the pump long preceded the war in Ukraine. Gas price hikes, they said, were the result of Mr. Biden’s cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline, the temporary halt on new drilling leases on public lands and the surrendering of “energy independence” — all incorrect assertions.

Here’s a fact check of their claims.”

    Opinion:
Biden heeded Republicans’ pleas to ban Russian oil. Then they pounced.

“A cynic is rarely disappointed by this Republican Party. Yet even by that standard, the current attempt to blame President Biden — and absolve Vladimir Putin — for the spike in gas prices is a special case.
Tell us your thoughts on Editorial Board articles in this short survey

For days, Republicans called for a ban on imports of Russian oil, a move that, while the right thing to do to counter Putin’s attack against Ukraine, would cause already high gas prices to rise even further. Biden did as Republicans wanted — and they responded by blaming his energy policies for spiking gas prices.”

VAWA reauthorization headed to president’s desk
Tribal provisions passed in appropriations bill for 2022 fiscal year

Tribal nations are celebrating the reauthorized Violence Against Women Act.

Congress passed the omnibus spending package for the 2022 fiscal year late Thursday, which included major tribal provisions. It passed in the Senate with a 68-31 vote. The bill will now head to the president’s desk to be signed.

This means that tribal nations “will continue to increase safety and justice for victims who had previously seen little of either,” said Fawn Sharp, president of the National Congress of American Indians in a statement.

Pelosi Statement on One-Year Anniversary of the American Rescue Plan

“One year ago, amid the darkness of the pandemic, President Biden proudly signed into law Congressional Democrats’ American Rescue Plan. This historic legislation served as a beacon of hope for millions of families: putting our nation on the path to crush the pandemic by getting shots in arms, money in pockets, workers safely back on the job and children safely back at school.

“Democrats’ Rescue Plan, passed without a single Republican vote, changed the course of our fight against the pandemic. This law saved lives: kickstarting a massive national vaccination program and delivering testing, tracing, PPE and more to communities in need. And it put Americans back on the road to financial security, including through direct payments, assistance to help families stay in their homes, investments in hard-hit small businesses, measures to lift millions of children out of poverty and help for cities and states. Proudly, in the Rescue Plan, Democrats took action to honor our frontline heroes – health care workers, police officers, firefighters, teachers, and food, sanitation and transportation workers — who are the backbone of our economy.

“Because of the success of the Rescue Plan, President Biden and Congressional Democrats helped our nation power an extraordinary economic recovery, which has created more than seven million good-paying jobs and slashed unemployment to 3.8 percent. Now, as we reflect on the progress made over the past year, Democrats are hard at work to build on these gains. While Republicans want to hike taxes and rip away health care from families, Democrats are focusing on Building a Better America: lowering families’ costs, increasing their paychecks and creating good-paying jobs.”

Aside from COVID and all that goes with that, we’ve had to deal with 2 separate shooting threats, social emotional issues with the kids (the adults just deal with them on their own because we ALL have social emotional issues ourselves, and just a massive amount of standardized testing that’s happening right now…I hate all of it. Hate it. Oh, there’s more where this came from, but this is enough reason why this break is so needed…. i remember Pres Obama spoke about how getting involved…and how that can ease the anxiety…i have decided to run for committee person…i went out last week for signatures…meeting my neighbors is always an interesting experience…there are so many folks who do not know how their government works or know about what is happening in the PA or the world…it can be disheartening…but i keep it moving…

marleysperson, big time thanks for all you’re doing in school and wishing you some down time.

Am in mourning for all the little ones, Moms, soldiers, and family members lost every day in Putin’s war.
This leaden heavy feeling and dread for Ukraine. Does putin think he can take any of his illusory ill gotten gains with him when he goes?

NGO chef José Andrés joins humanitarian efforts in Ukraine

‘Lviv, Ukraine, Mar 12 (EFE).- Spanish chef José Andrés, founder of the World Central Kitchen NGO, unloads products at a restaurant in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv while his team prepares a plan to provide food to those fleeing caught up in the hostilities of the Russian invasion.

Speaking to Efe at !FESTrepublic, a concert venue that has been adapted to help with the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, Andrés describes the war as a “hurricane that never stops.”

“Everyone talks about energy, gas, oil, but we are seeing that Ukraine is a large producer of grain, what about that?” he added.

“The great energy that no one talks about is that of food because we take it for granted and how we neglect it (…) The big famines have started with the big wars.”

U.S. Fights Bioweapons Disinformation Pushed by Russia and China

False Claims of U.S. Biowarfare Labs in Ukraine Grip QAnon
The conspiracy theory has been boosted by Russian and Chinese media and diplomats.
    by Justin Ling

Pro-Russian channels and QAnon conspiracy theorists think Moscow is launching airstrikes on Ukraine to destroy bioweapon-manufacturing labs in order to prevent the American infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci from creating a sequel to the COVID-19 virus.

This theory hangs on the entirely discredited idea that the coronavirus was designed as a bioweapon, perhaps by the U.S. government itself. And yet, the theory is being shared thousands of times, faster than regulated social media networks can yank the conspiracy theory down. On unregulated platforms, such as Telegram and 8chan, the conspiracy theory has become incredibly popular, racking up hundreds of thousands of hits each day.

Remarks by Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield at a UN Security Council Meeting Called by Russia to Spread Disinformation About Ukraine
    (excerpt)

“Thank you, Mr. President. And thank you to our briefers for your remarks this morning.

Russia asked the Security Council for today’s meeting for the sole purpose of lying and spreading disinformation, and that is exactly what you have heard from the Russian PR this morning. You also heard from Ms. Nakamitsu that the UN is not aware of any biological or chemical weapons programs in Ukraine.

Last month, Secretary Blinken laid out with tragic accuracy what Russia was about to do. He specifically warned that Russia would manufacture a pretext for attack, and even cautioned that Russia would fabricate allegations about chemical or biological weapons to justify its own violent attacks against the Ukrainian people. Today, the world is watching Russia do exactly what we warned it would. Russia is attempting to use the Security Council to legitimize disinformation and deceive people to justify President Putin’s war of choice against the Ukrainian people. And China, too, has been spreading disinformation in support of Russia’s outrageous claims.

I will say this once: Ukraine does not have a biological weapons program. There are no Ukrainian biological weapons laboratories supported by the United States – not near Russia’s border or anywhere.

So here are the facts: Ukraine owns and operates its own public health laboratory infrastructure. These facilities make it possible to detect and diagnose diseases like COVID-19, which benefit us all. The United States has assisted Ukraine to do this safely and securely. This is work that has been done proudly, clearly, and out in the open. This work has everything to do with protecting the health of people. It has absolutely nothing – absolutely nothing – to do with biological weapons.”

Last exit from Moscow: the ordinary Russians desperate to escape Putin’s grasp

With the Kremlin’s regime in turmoil, large numbers are trying to start new lives abroad – while they still can

    By
    Owen Matthews

“Millions of educated, international Russians such as Anna face a stark choice – adapt to a dark, repressive world of economic collapse at home, or try to leave the country for an uncertain future abroad. The plight of millions of Ukrainians fleeing for their lives from bombardment is infinitely more acute. The stakes, for them, are life and death.

But, in some ways, Anna envies her Kyiv friends. “They have hope. The world is on their side. Europe is welcoming them,” she says, flicking through images of seas of protesters around the world waving yellow-and-blue Ukrainian flags. “When the war is over, they’ll go back to a free, European country. But Russians? Everyone hates Russians. Even most Russians hate people like us, who are against the regime.”

Every day brings more news of Russia’s isolation. One by one, the trappings of a modern, European lifestyle that many Muscovites had taken for granted fell away.”

“Get your son out of Moscow… now!”
My old friend Valentina, a literary editor, is usually one of the most laidback people I know. Now she is near hysteria. “He’s 19,” she shouts. “He’s here on a Russian passport. He’s not at university. If he doesn’t report to the draft office, he’s breaking the law. What part don’t you understand?”

“ApplePay pulls the plug on Russian bank cards, followed by Visa and Mastercard. Adobe, Microsoft, Samsung, Nokia and Apple stop updating software and phone apps, collapsing the connected world of Moscow’s intelligentsia. Luxury brands follow Ikea’s lead. The shelves of Moscow’s Gucci, Chanel, LMVH, Prada and dozens of other stores that have marked sophistication and wealth stand empty. Then the shops and brands used by ordinary Muscovites begin to close – McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Starbucks.”

“Polls confirm that some 70 per cent of Russians support Putin’s “de-Nazification” campaign in Ukraine.
State-controlled TV current affairs shows are filled with near-hysterical propaganda against Kiyv’s “fascist” regime and railing against Nato “aggression”. Putin appears, as usual, at the top of the news.
He looks puffy, stiff and old, and makes basic grammatical errors in his speech.”

“Friends swap information on Facebook – until access is shut down, and they switch to the more secure Telegram app. Turkey is visa-free for Russians, so is Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan. But that’s about it.”

“Valentina, the literary editor, remains stuck in Moscow. Like most of the Moscow intelligensia, she has little money and sees no realistic chance for her to make a new life abroad – much as she would like to. A poll conducted by the now-closed independent Novaya Gazeta showed that 80 per cent of their mostly middle-class, educated, urban readers would like to leave the country.

“Nobody wants us abroad,” she laments. “And nobody wants people like us here, either.”

Pennsylvania Democrats introduced the K. Leroy Irvis Voting Rights Protection Act, House Bill 2090, an election reform bill focused on making voting easier and safer. House Minority Leader Joanna McClinton (D) announced the bill, named after the first Black speaker of the Pennsylvania House on the one year anniversary of the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol to highlight the necessity for safeguarding democracy in Pennsylvania. “My proposal is not about erecting barriers, accessing sensitive information from Pennsylvanians, or suppressing voter turnout – specifically in our Black and Brown communities,” said McClinton. “It is about investing in ways to strengthen our election process that benefits everyone.”

I’m flabbergasted at the Ukrainian people, especially the young men who are being interviewed on my local newscast and they are saying that the US should be helping in Ukraine. I see him and I’m thinking: “Instead of being here on safe soil, why aren’t “you” in Ukraine fighting for your Country”??

President Biden, will NOT put our Soldiers in harms way while the people of Ukraine are running away to safety.
