    IMO, those yahoo’s who rowed their happy azz over on the Mayflower should be celebrating every Month as Black History Month. There would NOT be an America without the sweat and blood of my ancestors; the Slaves.
    Let’s keep it real, people.

    Shaun White Finds the Glory in Falling Short
    Trying for a fourth Olympic gold medal, the 35-year-old snowboarding champion was surpassed by his heirs apparent. That, in itself, was enough.

    “ZHANGJIAKOU, China — It all came to an end here, on a tilted chute of ice on an unnamed mountain in China, and the only surprise was that 35-year-old Shaun White did not have one more trick in him. He had made a career of such things. His final ride down the Olympic halfpipe came after a fall. He popped onto his feet and took off his helmet, raising it to the air. He slid downhill slowly on his snowboard, into the warm embrace of adulation and off toward the unknown.”

    “I’m proud of this life I’ve led, and what I’ve done in this sport, and what I’ve left behind,” he said afterward, during a long slog of interviews in which he swung from laughter to tears and back again. “You’re watching it — these younger riders,” White said. “They’ve been on my heels every step of the way, and to see them finally surpass me is, I think deep down, what I always wanted.”

    “Maybe fourth was the right spot for White’s story, leaving his three gold medals to stand on their own.
    When White stood at the top of the pipe for his final run, he raised his hand and circled his finger as if to say,
    “Let’s go.” He had one shot to get onto the podium. He tried to add an extra rotation to his cab double cork,
    but fell on his backside and slid into the trough of the pipe. That is when White took off his helmet and slowly slid back into the next phase of his life.”

    —Beautiful, thanks Shaun for showing them the way…thx nyt, nbc.

    Fifteen years ago, then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama announced his candidacy for president during an event witnessed by thousands at the Old State Capitol in Springfield.

    A historical marker will be placed on the grounds of the Old State Capitol later this year

    “To commemorate both Obama’s historic announcement that day — Feb. 10, 2007 — and a later one to introduce running mate Sen. Joe Biden, the Old State Capitol Foundation and Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced that a historical marker will be erected on the Old State Capitol grounds.”

    “From his official presidential announcement to his service in the Statehouse,
    President Obama’s legacy of leadership began with his service to the people of Illinois,” Gov. JB Pritzker said Thursday in a state release announcing the historical marker. “This marker of Obama’s historic announcement at the Old State Capitol will ensure his story will forever be a part of Illinois’ history.”

    On that day 15 years ago,
    Obama received an enthusiastic welcome on what was a sun-drenched but frigid Saturday.
    “Thousands of people came out on that cold, wintry day 15 years ago to hear Barack Obama’s historic announcement,” said David Joens, president of the Old State Capitol Foundation in a press release about the marker. “He chose to announce his candidacy at the Old State Capitol because of its historic ties to Abraham Lincoln, but he was also making history himself. That history needs to be recognized,
    and a permanent marker will do that.”

    “It’s humbling to see a crowd like this, but in my heart, I know you didn’t come here just for me,” Obama told the crowd that day.”

    Seven of the eight members of America’s women’s World Cup bobsled team…are Black,
    as are four of the five at the Beijing Olympics.

    They include Evans; the pilot Elana Meyers Taylor, a three-time Olympic medalist who sought out the sport after watching Flowers win gold but briefly saw her hopes jeopardized by a positive coronavirus test;
    Sylvia Hoffman, a former college basketball player who once trained to be an Olympic weight lifter;
    and Kaysha Love, a one-time sprinter discovered in a virtual scouting session.

    A medal for one or several of them appears to be in the cards:
    The United States women have claimed at least one medal in every Games since bobsled was added for women in 2002. But their success also reflects a rethinking of what an American bobsledder looks like, and where they can be found.

    “She’s the reason why I’m in bobsled,” Meyers Taylor said. “Looking at her and seeing someone who looks like me, it showed that it was possible. Without her, there’s no way I would have thought winter sport was for people who looked like us.”

    Flowers never had that kind of role model.
    “Getting into the sport of bobsled, I didn’t know anyone that looked like me,” Flowers said. “And so now that I’ve inspired Elana and she’s inspired the next generation, hopefully this will just inspire a whole new group of people to try a sport they never would have tried.”

    —-been following Meyers Taylor…gosh.

    Golden years: Jacobellis, 36, and Baumgartner, 40, win in team snowboard cross.

    “Jacobellis became the oldest American woman to win an Olympic medal when she took gold in the women’s snowboard cross this week.

    Baumgartner, a four-time Olympian, hoped that his age-defying Olympic run “inspires people to never give up on their dreams,” he wrote on Instagram before competing in Beijing, adding: “You’re never too old to fight for what you want!” He builds a practice track around his house every year to stay in the game.” (gold)
