Well, well! Where is everyone? I guess I chose the wrong time to drop in for a quick look-see. 🙂

Hello to you NerdyW! I haven’t seen you in a long while, so I’ll share my new year wishes for you now – Have a terrific, and uplifting, 2022!

Hi everyone else! I’m working off and online – something I absolutely hate as I have to be visible sometimes. That’s part of the reason I’ve been so scarce in the village. Also, I have become far, far more reclusive than before. Nevertheless I think of you guys often and wish you all the best, particularly healthwise.

“In states like Texas and Missouri, radical Republican lawmakers have enacted draconian abortion restrictions

And, after shamefully permitting Texas’s flagrantly unconstitutional SB8 to proceed through a cowardly, dark-of-night ruling, the Supreme Court stands poised to potentially strike a devastating blow to the Constitutional right to choose when it rules on Dobbs v. Congressman Ted Lieu:
“Well, let me first say that, last week, a YouGov/Economist poll had Democrats ahead in the generic congressional ballot. We have every reason and motivation and indication that we’re going to hold the House.
However, to answer your hypothetical, I think President Biden asked a very good question,
which is, what are Republicans for? And right now, we don’t know what they’re for,
other than for vengeance. And you see Kevin McCarthy saying he wants to throw Democrats off committees without even giving a reason as to what any Democrat may have done wrong.
And so you’re looking purely at a vengeance-motivated kind of campaign.
    They’re in this for power.
They don’t have any policies for the American people.”

    Joy Reid:
“And, you know Michael, so the way you pull off the perfect crime is then you erase the teaching of history.
What you specialize in. You say ‘we’re going to do these things’. And it’s the perfect crime because you can`t even teach about it.”

    Presidential historian Michael Beschloss:
“No. That’s exactly right. And so then we go to George Orwell.
And the other thing goes back to what you said at the beginning Joy, here.
We have got a Supreme Court unlike for most of American history, there used to be a lot more turnover.
You know, justices did not serve these long periods of time and that was because people didn’t live too long and they also were appointed at older ages than they are now.
There was a greater connection between public opinion and what justices did.
People said there has to be some connection between the rulings of the court and where the country stands.
Does anyone believe that the kind of rulings that we’re contemplating tonight with horror are the majority of the American people? I don’t think they are at all.
And the other thing is that oftentimes, throughout Supreme Court history, you’d have surprises.
You’d have a David Souter, who was more liberal than expected or Byron White,
who is more conservative than expected.
These people are so vetted that we know exactly what we`re getting.
Tthat`s not what the founders wanted.”

    e.g…

“We can all agree the last two years have been the best of our lives,
but a bipartisan pair of senators seem to think there are a few things the government could have done…better?

Sens. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Richard Burr (R-NC) on Tuesday introduced the PREVENT Pandemics ACT, which is packed with proposals aimed at bolstering the country’s preparedness for, you guessed it,
future pandemics. The bill would create a task force to assess the U.S. coronavirus response and examine the origins of COVID-19, and overhaul the way the government stockpiles medical supplies and monitors disease outbreaks, including strengthened genomic sequencing. The legislation would also require Senate confirmation for the director of the CDC, and includes proposals to improve coordination between health agencies.
We look forward to the GOP filibuster when Democrats vote down an amendment requiring Rand Paul’s personal sign-off on future vaccine rollouts.”

“A lawyer for Rep. Madison Cawthorne (R-NC) cited the 1872 Amnesty Act,
which granted amnesty to Confederate soldiers who fought in the Civil war, to defend Cawthorne’s eligibility for office after encouraging an insurrection. ‘My client is no different from the traitors of yore, Your Honor.'”

“Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is despised around the world for holding up the climate provisions in the Build Back Better Act, in a moving reminder that a single person who truly sucks can bring the global community together.”

“You own this. You own Tucker’s program that’s putting our health care workers in peril, putting our hospitals in peril, putting all of us in peril for ratings, for money, so these American oligarchs can keep pumping out bullshit into our homes.”

“Acosta said after playing a clip of Tucker Carlson’s COVID vaccine misinformation:
“These vaccines have been proven to be safe and highly effective.
And just as Tucker and the bolshevik factory are acting as a mouthpiece for Putin, they are doing something perhaps even more destructive. O’Toole: America is not on the brink of civil war

“In the third episode of our series, “A House Divided,” Irish Times columnist Fintan O’Toole says that the U.S. is not on the brink of a civil war and warns Americans to be cautious about repeating the claim that America is headed towards a civil war.”

  53. January 27, 2022 at 3:53 pm

Finton O’Toole speaks about how one group is using the “already in civil war…get ready to hit them first” rhetoric.
And projecting an imaginary future for America. Saying it is set for civil war, giving an impression of ‘acceptable levels of violence’. This distracts our attention away from this moment, from dealing with the insurrection,
and using the law to bring everyone involved to justice right now.

    imo,
thinking how authoritarians — remembering abuser-criminal predator Donald Trump’s 24/7 chaos and lying hell — create an apparent world in which their victims can no longer imagine anything better and cannot see an end or way out. (Fear/anger centers in the brains of his base must be increasingly controlled by it.)

After being mentally/other abused by her husband for 13 years, my once profoundly stunning sister took her life. Towards the end she went to a counsellor who asked her to “imagine a safe place”. I asked her why she got up and left. She said “There was nothing there. I couldn’t see anything”. Imagine. A visual artist since childhood (w/social sciences career) couldn’t imagine anything. Because the facility to imagine had been gradually dismantled by a cunning abuser. I cannot bring her back and explain how he created the illusion they weren’t equal…so rely on him and fear the world.

Pls let’s not cling to phantoms, but be passionate about the leader we now have, walk by his side and believe
    in the power of non-violence.
