And then when you meet him, you’re like, ‘I totally understand why you had to be the first Black president.’
He has that energy about him. I was just in shock. Honestly, I just sat there for five seconds because my mind was asking, ‘Is this a dream? He’s walking towards you, Amy.”

As Afghanistan’s harsh winter sets in, many are forced to choose between food and warmth
“The country’s new rulers,
cut off from most international aid as well as Afghan government assets held in U.S. accounts,
have scant resources to protect millions of vulnerable people against another harsh winter. Aid groups estimate that nearly 23 million Afghans, out of a total population of 39 million, already do not have enough to eat.
Many also lack solid shelter and money to heat their homes at night, forcing them to choose between food and fuel, and creating additional potential for a full-fledged humanitarian disaster, aid officials said.
Many Afghans were living a meager existence before the Taliban’s takeover. But others are part of a large, newly impoverished urban working class that mushroomed after the sudden collapse of the vast, foreign-funded war and aid economy.

Remarks by Vice President Harris on Protecting the Right to Vote
“Two landmark bills sit before the United States Senate: the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. (Applause)
And these two bills represent the first real opportunity to secure the freedom to vote since the United States Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act nearly a decade ago.
We do not know when we will have this opportunity again. Senate Republicans have exploited arcane rules to block these bills.
And let us be clear: The Constitution of the United States gives the Congress the power to pass legislation.
And nowhere — nowhere — does the Constitution give a minority the right to unilaterally block legislation. (Applause.)
The American people have waited long enough. The Senate must act.”
Remarks by President Biden on Protecting the Right to Vote
“State legislatures can pass anti-voting laws with simple majorities.
If they can do that, then the United States Senate should be able to protect voting rights by a simple majority.”
“Today I’m making it clear: To protect our democracy, I support changing the Senate rules, whichever way they need to be changed — (applause) — to prevent a minority of senators from blocking action on voting rights. (Applause.)
When it comes to protecting majority rule in America, the majority should rule in the United States Senate.
I make this announcement with careful deliberation,
recognizing the fundamental right to vote is the right from which all other rights flow.
And I make it with an appeal to my Republican colleagues, to those Republicans who believe in the rule of law: Restore the bipartisan tradition of voting rights.
The people who restored it, who abided by it in the past were Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush. They all supported the Voting Rights Act.
Don’t let the Republican Party morph into something else.
Restore the institution of the Senate the way it was designed to be.
Senate rules were just changed to raise the debt ceiling so we wouldn’t renege on our debt for the first time in our history and prevent an economic crisis. That was done by a simple majority.”

U.N. Seeks Huge Aid Increase to Prevent ‘Catastrophe’ in Afghanistan
The $5 billion appeal comes as a severe drought and the toll of decades of war have plunged three-quarters
of the country’s population into acute poverty, according to the United Nations.
“The United Nations made what it described Tuesday as its biggest appeal ever for a single country,
asking international donors to give more than $5 billion to Afghanistan to fend off a humanitarian disaster.
Five months after the Taliban seized power, a severe drought and the cumulative toll of decades of war have left more than half the country’s population needing humanitarian aid and plunged three-quarters of its 40 million people into acute poverty, the United Nations said.
“A full-blown humanitarian catastrophe looms,” Martin Griffiths, the U.N.’s emergency aid coordinator,
said in a statement. “My message is urgent: Don’t shut the door on the people of Afghanistan.”
Chris Hayes reporting that 97% of Afghans live below the poverty line ($1.90 a day).
NSC reports $308 million has been sent in humanitarian assistance + covid vaccines.
U.N. is asking for 5 Billion dollars.
9.4 billion dollars in Afghan government assets has been frozen in U.S. accounts.
Question, pls imo:
At no cost to tax payer dollars, cannot we begin releasing cash that already belongs to Afghanistan…
bit by bit? We can monitor if the Taliban actually spend it on feeding Afghans. If they take care of Afghans with the cash, then more can be released. 9.4 billion dollars is a lot of money, already twice what the United Nations is trying to raise in aid.
Former President Barack Obama:
We need to follow John Lewis’ example and fight for our democracy
“The world, and future generations, will be watching,”
Obama writes as he calls on Senate to “do the right thing” and pass legislation to protect voting rights.
When I spoke at John Lewis’ memorial service two years ago, I emphasized a truth John knew better than just about anyone. Our democracy isn’t a given. It isn’t self-executing. We, as citizens, have to nurture and tend it. We have to work at it. And in that task, we have to vigilantly preserve and protect our most basic tool of self-government, which is the right to vote.
At the time, various state legislators across the country had already passed a variety of laws designed to make voting harder. It was an attack on everything John Lewis fought for, and a challenge to our most fundamental democratic freedoms.
Since then, things have only gotten worse.”
Slow unraveling of basic democratic principles:
“While the American people turned out to vote at the highest rate in a century in the last presidential election, members of one of our two major political parties – spurred on by the then-sitting president – denied the results of that election and spun conspiracy theories that drove a violent mob to attack our Capitol.”
Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes charged with seditious conspiracy in Jan. 6 Capitol riot
“Stewart Rhodes — founder and leader of the extremist group Oath Keepers, whose members are accused of being key players in the Jan. 6 attack on Congress — has been indicted and arrested, officials said Thursday.”
