    Pelosi Statement
on Supreme Court Oral Arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization

    Washington, D.C. –
Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement in advance of the U.S. Supreme Court hearing arguments in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, challenging Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban.
The Speaker joined a bicameral amicus brief in the case in September.

“As the Supreme Court hears arguments in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization,
it has the opportunity and responsibility to honor the Constitution, the law and this basic truth:
every woman has the constitutional right to basic reproductive health care.

“Mississippi’s radical abortion ban, part of a nationwide assault against women’s freedoms targeting in particular women of color and women from low-income communities, is brazenly unconstitutional and designed to destroy Roe v. Wade. Yet again, Republicans are trying to control a woman’s most personal decisions about her body and her family and are trying to criminalize health care professionals for providing reproductive care. The constitutional right to an abortion has been repeatedly affirmed, and any failure to fully strike down the Mississippi ban would seriously erode the legitimacy of the Court, as the Court itself warned in its ruling in Casey, and question its commitment to the rule of law itself.

“The House is committed to defending women’s health freedoms and to enshrining into law our House-passed Women’s Health Protection Act, led by Congresswoman Judy Chu, to protect reproductive health care for all women across America.”

‘Do not lecture us’ about life,
Murphy says in fiery speech following school shooting

“U.S. Sen Chris Murphy chastised his Republican colleaguesover the issues of gun violence and abortion
in a fiery speech on the Senate floor Tuesday, accusing them of lecturing about the “sanctity of life” on the same day that a gunman rampaged through a Michigan high school.”

“I listened to my Republican colleagues come down here one after another today and talk about the sanctity of life, at the very moment that moms and dads in Michigan were being told that their kids weren’t coming home because they were shot at school due to a country that has accepted gun violence due to Republicans fealty to the gun lobby,” Murphy, a Democrat, said in the speech.”

““Do not lecture us about the sanctity, the importance of life,
when 100 people every day are losing their lives to guns, when kids go to school fearful that they won’t return home because a classmate will turn a gun on them,” he added.

Murphy, a staunch advocate for tougher gun-control laws in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, used the speech to renew his call for the U.S. Senate to pass universal background checks and ban military-style assault weapons.”

    —-thank you Congressman Murphy.

Gunfire on School Grounds in the United States

Over several years of tracking, this data has shown us that gunfire on school grounds takes many forms and mirrors the problem of gun violence in the US. Gunfire on school grounds occurs most often at schools with a high proportion of students of color—disproportionately affecting Black students. For more information, read the analysis of this data and learn about proven solutions that can make schools in the US safer.

When it comes to how American children are exposed to gun violence,
gunfire at schools is just the tip of the iceberg–every year,
more than 3,000 children and teens are shot and killed and 15,000 more are shot and injured.
An estimated 3 million children in the US are exposed to shootings per year.

Witnessing shootings—whether in their schools, their communities or their homes–can have a devastating impact. Children exposed to violence, crime, and abuse are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol; suffer from depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder; fail or have difficulties in school; and engage in criminal activity.”

We cannot allow Rittenhouse to be a hero and role model for school students.
who are daily exposed to a violent culture of right wing politics espousing vigilantism and fantasy about gun violence and machismo.

imo the guys who groomed Rittenhouse for the court hearings with millions of dollars and practice hearings,
(and everyone who thought that was OK across the country) must take responsibility for school shootings in the U.S. here on out.

If I am wrong and they believe this is how you care for our children in school — they can ban military style weapons and high capacity magazines.

Gutting ‘Roe’ would devastate millions of Americans — and the court itself

“The court’s authority derives not from its ability to enforce its declarations — it lacks any such power —
but from the fact that Americans respect its decisions. Those decisions must reflect something greater than mere whim or raw political power in the Senate. The court should overturn precedent only in exceptional circumstances. The justices must exercise particular care in the case of Roe, because the court previously reviewed and reaffirmed it in Casey, reinforcing its status as the law of the land. In such a circumstance, the court should reverse only decisions that have proved, with the wisdom of hindsight, to be wildly bad.
That is not the case with Roe or Casey.”

SCOTUS Will Gaslight Us Until the End
    by Dahlia Lithwick

“Oral arguments today made clear that this court will overturn Roe—and that they’ll insist on their own reasonableness the whole time.”

“Perhaps it would be refreshing if the conservatives on the U.S. Supreme Court
no longer felt the need to lie to us. The lying, after all, is becoming nearly untenable—especially for an institution that relies on public confidence. After confirmation hearings in which they promised that stare decisis was a deeply felt value and that Roe v. Wade was a clear “precedent of the court” and “the law of the land.” there’s something sort of soothing about knowing the lying to our faces will soon be over. They were all six of them installed on the Supreme Court to put an end to Roe v. Wade after all, and that is exactly what they intend to do. There will be no more fake solicitude for women making difficult choices, no more pretense that pregnant people really just need better medical advice, and no more phony concerns about “abortion mills” that threaten maternal health. There is truly something to be said for putting an end to decades of false consciousness around the real endgame here, which was to take away a woman’s right to terminate a pregnancy—rape, incest, abuse, maternal health no longer being material factors. At least now we might soon be able to call it what it is.”

    • December 2, 2021 at 5:29 pm

“Despite all of the precious actions of Roberts and Barrett and, yes, Kavanaugh,
this was never a 3–3–3 court. It was a 6–3 court of which half of that six are sometimes slightly cautious about the rates at which they are willing to push their own ideological agendas under the threat of public illegitimacy. It seems that the issue on which they are prepared to do so is, as it has always been, women’s health and safety and equality and dignity.

But even as they do it, they will hold on to this idea that they have been moderate until the end.
After all, pro-choice senators confirmed them. Academics at Ivy League law schools promised they believed in precedent. And when they rule for Mississippi’s 15-week ban and overturn (or hollow out) Roe, they’ll have cover to justify it. They’ll probably point to Texas’ S.B. 8, a six-week ban that has already been in effect for three months, which these same justices allowed to take effect when they didn’t have to sign their names to an order. But they’ll strike down that one, declaring that Texas cannot undermine judicial supremacy, and a six-week ban tied to vigilante justice is too, too much. And when they do, it will be yet another way for them to pretend to be scrupulously neutral on abortion and deeply worried about workable tests while they are really sailing through their own personal 24-hour drive-thru Overton window.

When that happens, you will hear more about the much-vaunted 3–3–3 court
and its incremental moderates. That too will be gaslighting. Your call whether you want to fall for it.”
      (Dahlia Lithwick)

Hi Everyone! Yesterday was my Mom’s birthday! She is the neighborhood Christmas Lady. Goes all out with decorations, inside and outside every year. All the outside decorations were finally finished and we had a lovely evening celebrating her. When the lights turned on, a neighbor came out to say she was so happy, because she always looks forward to seeing Mom and Dad’s outdoor display. “Now it feels like Christmas around here.” I wish you could’ve seen how happy that made my Mom. Initial unemployment claims are now down more than 70 percent since I became President, and total claims filed each week are now down by around 16 million over that same period.”
