“You write that growth has meant emissions, and emissions have meant growth.
The climate crisis is a result of that history as is the wealth of nations.” (Chris Hayes)

David Wallace-Wells, Editor at large, New York Magazine:
    Climate reparations:
“I almost think it’s a mistake to think of it in terms of spending money.
90% of the world now lives in places where clean energy is cheaper than dirty energy,
which means it’s not markets that are slowing us. It’s obstacles to markets that are slowing us.
And so if we really unleashed the logic of market power, in fact we’d be heading towards a faster transition.
Every economist in the world today will tell you would bring us more prosperity and a more just equitable prosperity as soon as a decade or so from now if we undertook it now.”

    • November 5, 2021 at 2:58 pm

      Climate Reparations
A trillion tons of carbon hangs in the air, put there by the world’s rich, an existential threat to its poor. Can we remove it?

      Wallace-Wells on decarbonizing:

“It won’t solve the problem of fossil fuels.
We need to get rid of them to start with.
But once we’ve gotten rid of them, this will help us clean up what’s called the residual emissions,
      the really dirty industrial stuff.
And maybe even on a century or century and a half time scale,
to allow us to undo some of the damage
that we’ve done to this point
in inventing this climate crisis out of nothing.”

  4. November 5, 2021 at 3:24 pm

    The Green Climate Fund

“Climate change is running faster than we are. We need much more ambition and urgency. Finance is key.
Developed nations need to meet their pledge to mobilise USD 100 billion dollars a year
for mitigation and adaptation in developing countries.”

—–the 100 billion USD pledged by the wealthiest nations for climate adaptation and mitigation has not been met.
Wallace-Wells points out that 10 times more is possibly needed. This is a moral debt to poor nations that have done the least to engineer this crisis yet are suffering the most impacts.

Native America Calling: Catholic reconciliation in Canada?
“Pope Francis is scheduled to meet with an Indigenous delegation when he visits Canada in December.”

“His trip is billed as part “of the long-standing pastoral process of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.”
It comes after the discovery of hundreds of potential unmarked grave sites on the grounds of former residential schools operated by the church. The schools housed mainly Indigenous children who were forced to attend.
Native America Calling will explore the significance of the visit and what it might accomplish.”

    November 2, 2021

“After a three game stretch in Atlanta during Major League Baseball’s premiere event,
audiences worldwide will have witnessed multiple examples of the objectionable “tomahawk chop” and a chant borne from ill-informed Native stereotypes.
As Atlanta and Houston battle for the World Series title,

Remarks by President Biden on the October Jobs Report

“Over five and a half million jobs. Unemployment down at record pace to 4.6 percent.
And before we passed the Rescue Plan, forecasters said it would take until the end of 2023 — to the end of 2023 to get to 4.6 unemployment rate.

Today, we’ve reached that rate two years before forecasters thought it was possible.
I would humbly suggest this is a significant improvement from when I took office and a sign that we’re on the right track.

This did not happen by accident or just because.

We laid the foundation for this recovery with my American Rescue Plan
that Congress passed at the beginning of my term. It put money in working families’ pockets. It gave families with kids a tax cut each month. It helped keep small businesses going in the dark days earlier this year. And it provided the resources needed to launch one of the fastest mass vaccination programs ever.”

Press Briefing by Principal Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre

“President Biden’s economic plan is working.
And thanks to his Rescue Plan and our successful vaccine program, America continues to add jobs at a record place — pace: 620,000 a month on average and over 5.6 million jobs created since he took office. Americans are getting back to work.

Because of the success of that effort, our economy has the resilience we need to weather the challenges posed by this virus, more Americans are going back to work, and more Americans feel safe going back to work.

That’s why we added 531,000 jobs in October and the unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent —
the lowest level since the beginning of the pandemic, and a place that the CBO projected, before the Rescue Plan was passed, that we wouldn’t reach until the fourth quarter of 2023.

Unemployment has decreased this year more than any other year in U.S. history.
And the number of Americans filing for unemployment each week has declined from nearly 900,000 when President Biden took office to under 270,000 this week.

Because of the decisive action the President took with the Rescue Plan and his efforts to fight the pandemic,
our economy has rebounded at a rate unsurpassed in modern history, far outstripping those of our peer countries. And because of that, businesses were able to stay open, schools were able to reopen, and Americans are able to get back to work.”

      Press Sec. Jean-Pierre:

“On Monday, we hit 80 percent of adults with at least one shot and 70 percent of adults fully vaccinated. And we’re still vaccinating hundreds of thousands of Americans every day.

Last Tuesday, CDC’s decision made 28 million kids age 5 through 11 eligible for vaccination. This was a huge sigh of relief for parents and means 95 percent of Americans are now eligible for vaccination.”

NEW DELHI, Nov 5 (Reuters) – New Delhi residents woke up on Friday under a blanket of smog darkening the city, the most dangerous air pollution of the year after Diwali revellers defied – as usual – a fireworks ban during India’s annual Hindu festival of lights.

New Delhi has the worst air quality of all world capitals, but even by its sorry standards Friday’s reading – the morning after the end of Diwali – was extra bad, the price for celebrating India’s biggest festival in the noisiest and smokiest way.

Fact Sheet: The Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal

“This Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal will rebuild America’s roads, bridges and rails, expand access to clean drinking water, ensure every American has access to high-speed internet, tackle the climate crisis, advance environmental justice, and invest in communities that have too often been left behind. The legislation will help ease inflationary pressures and strengthen supply chains by making long overdue improvements for our nation’s ports, airports, rail, and roads. It will drive the creation of good-paying union jobs and grow the economy sustainably and equitably so that everyone gets ahead for decades to come. Combined with the President’s Build Back Framework,
it will add on average 1.5 million jobs per year for the next 10 years.”

    Speaker Pelosi Statement
on President Biden’s Leadership Delivering Historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation

“The American people sent President Biden to the White House and Democratic Majorities to Congress to deliver results that make their lives better. Last night, by sending an historic and bipartisan infrastructure package to the President’s desk, that is exactly what we have done.

I commend the President for his visionary and tireless leadership in securing the passage of this once-in-a-century infrastructure investment on a strong bipartisan vote. This landmark legislation will create millions of good-paying American jobs and make a lasting difference in our communities: strengthening our roads and bridges, improving public transit, expanding broadband, ensuring clean drinking water for every child and more. While our crumbling infrastructure has long held us back, these monumental investments will ensure America can outcompete any nation on earth for decades to come.

This week, Democrats have taken a momentous step toward realizing our transformative agenda.
When the House returns, we will pass our Build Back Better Act to bring down the everyday costs that burden working parents – from health care to child care to paid leave to prescription drugs and more – while also securing one of the largest middle class tax cuts in history. Together, our bills will forge the greatest progress for families in a generation.”

Vice President Harris Visits NASA to See Vital Climate Science Work

“The urgency of Earth science and climate studies took the spotlight Friday as Vice President Kamala Harris visited NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The vice president received a firsthand look at how the nation’s space program studies climate change and provides crucial information to understand our planet’s changes and their impacts on our lives.”

““I truly believe space activity is climate action. Space activity is education. Space activity is also economic growth. It is also innovation and inspiration. And it is about our security and our strength,” the vice president said.
“When it comes to our space activity, there is limitless potential. … So, as we go forth from here, let us continue to seize the opportunity of space.”

From the moment of their unveiling at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in February 2018, the museum’s official portraits of President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama have become iconic. Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of President Obama and Amy Sherald’s portrait of the former First Lady have inspired unprecedented responses from the public.

This five-city tour will travel to the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, LACMA, High Art Museum, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston from June 2021 through May 2022 and is expected to reach millions of people who might not otherwise have an opportunity to view these remarkable paintings. In addition to the artworks themselves, the LACMA presentation of The Obama Portraits Tour will feature teacher workshops, curatorial tours, and a richly illustrated book. This special presentation will enhance the conversations surrounding the power of portraiture and its potential to engage communities.
