We must pull out all the stops to make sure the Freedom to Vote Act passes (which means exempting it from the filibuster). I’ve been wondering how @Meta feels about Faceplant trying to rebrand with her name? I’d love to quit if there was a good alternative!

Eleventh Circuit Reinstates Pay-To-Vote for Florida Felons Who Completed Sentences

“This court’s order prevents thousands of otherwise eligible voters from participating in Florida’s primary election simply because they are poor,” Justice Sotomayor explained in her dissent. The court’s “inaction continues a trend of condoning disenfranchisement.” (Florida has an estimated 774,000 disenfranchised felons in the state.)

For now, the voters’ will in approving Amendment 4 has been negated by Florida’s GOP-dominated legislature. Unless SCOTUS intervenes, the re-enfranchisement victory that already created a class based upon offenses has another class: the poor who have little hope of paying off their LFOs. See: Jones v. Governor of Fla., 975 F.3d 1016 (11th Cir. 2020).

Tom Nichols, author “Our Own Worst Enemy”:
“What’s really happening here is that Trump and Bannon and the rest of them,
they`re not just thumbing their nose at the rule of law, they’re trying to make the point that Congress is not really
a branch of government, e.g. ‘The Article I power of the Constitution does’t really exist unless you happen to like it.’

….McCarthy isn’t really talking to the American people or to other members of Congress. He is talking to a very narrow slice of the Republican base of whom he is deeply afraid of crossing, including Donald Trump. And it’s a tragedy, because that continues the attack on our constitutional system of government.”

    Joy Reid:
“What’s bizarre about it, you’re having members of Congress essentially argue that their own branch of government has no power. That their own branch of government does not have the right to issue and enforce a subpoena. And then you have someone like Kevin McCarthy who then wants to take control of a branch of that very government that he is attempting to strip of its power.”

    Nichols:
“But it makes perfect sense if you think like the cheap and corroded authoritarians that people like McCarthy have become. Which is that: ‘Congress doesn’t matter and is unimportant unless WE control it, unless the party I like controls it. Then it should become all powerful and be able to do anything at once. If someone else controls it, you may ignore it at your leisure’. And that’s the way authoritarians think. ’Institutions only matter if they happen to be in your grip…they only matter if you’re in charge of them.’”

“I think they have wrong-footed the Democrats here who have internalized the Republican critique of them that ‘You have to be civil. You have to take us seriously. You can’t accuse of us bad faith, even when we’re obviously acting in bad faith’. I think the answer here is not to sink to Mitch McConnell’s level but to be sober and judicious and clear-eyed and as cold-blooded as Mitch McConnell is being. To say McConnell would overthrow the filibuster if it were in his interest. We need to think that way ourselves.”

    EUN SUN KIM

She’s Making History in Opera. Can She Help Ensure Its Future?
Eun Sun Kim is the first woman to serve as music director of one of America’s largest opera companies. She aims to broaden the art form’s appeal in the digital age.

“But Kim, who turns 41 on Saturday, is uneasy about the attention. She recalled the example of her grandmother, a pioneering obstetrician in South Korea who longed for the day when she would be called simply a doctor, rather than a female doctor.

“It’s a hard job, it’s a big job, whether you’re a woman or a man,” she said. “I want to be seen just as a conductor.”

“The challenges are formidable. Kim is working to help San Francisco Opera recover from the turmoil of the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in the cancellation of 57 performances and the loss of more than $20 million in anticipated ticket revenue. While live performances are back, it is unclear if audiences will return in force.”

    Native America Calling:
Questions about federal pandemic relief distribution

“The more than $200 billion in federal pandemic aid to tribes provided welcome financial relief at a critical time.
But a new analysis points out what the study’s authors say is vastly inequitable distribution of that money.
Scholars with the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development
say flaws in the formula established to distribute the money are the main culprit and
both the Biden and Trump administrations chose to ignore recommendations by tribes and others
to make the allocations more fair.”

    CHARLES ‘CHUCK’ F. SAMS III
delivers an opening statement at his confirmation hearing to serve as director of the National Park Service in President Joe Biden’s administration.

“Sams is a citizen of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, based in Oregon.
He also has ties to the Yankton Sioux Tribe and the Cocopah Tribe.
“My great-grandmother, Mary, was a Walla Walla and Cayuse tribal member and the daughter of Chief Peo Peo Mox Mox, headman of the Walla Walla people,” Sams told the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources in his opening statement on October 19, 2021.

“My personal history is deeply interwoven with the fabric of our shared American history,” said Sams, who was accompanied to the hearing in Washington, D.C,. by his wife and their oldest child.
The hearing is the first step in the confirmation process for Sams. The next step would be for the committee to hold a business meeting and vote on his nomination. From there, he would go to the full U.S. Senate.
If confirmed by the chamber, Sams would be the first Native person to serve as director of the National Park Service, which is part of the Department of the Interior, the federal agency with the most trust and treaty responsibilities in Indian Country. Secretary Deb Haaland, a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, is the first Native person to lead the department.

Consultation sessions announced for Indian Youth Service Corps Program

The Department of the Interior will be consulting tribal nations, Alaska Native corporations and Native Hawaiian organizations as it moves forward with the Indian Youth Service Corps Program (IYSC).
The IYSC was established by an act of Congress in 2019.
It will provide education, employment, and training opportunities to American Indian,
Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian youth through conservation projects on public lands, Indian lands and Hawaiian homelands.

“The Indian Youth Service Corps Program has the potential to transform the lives of Indigenous youth all across our country,” said Secretary Deb Haaland, a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna
who is the first Native person to lead Interior,
the federal agency with the most trust and treaty responsibilities in Indian Country.
“Young people are the future stewards of our lands, waters, and resources. I am thrilled that the Interior Department can provide greater opportunities to learn, work, and train in a variety of innovative and transformative conservation projects,” Haaland said in a news release on Friday.”

Morning everyone:) Got my COVID booster on Thursday afternoon….it absolutely kicked my butt. was in bed for 36 hours straight. Fever, chills, aches and pains…got out of bed just this morning. Still have a slight fever but it WAS 102.3….that said, I’d do it all over again to be protected. It’s better than dying or being on a vent.

Agree about the side effects being worth it. As sick as I was with my breakthrough case of Covid, I cannot imagine having it and being unvaxxed. The vaccine did fully protect my lungs for which I was and am eternally grateful. I was scheduled to have my booster in mid November (90 days after having Regeneron). Now, it will be February. I have to wait 90 days after my knee surgery which is Tuesday.
