This just popped in my head from President Obama’s remarks at one of the rallies … he was commiserating that we all are fatigued daily with today’s politics (although that shouldn’t stop any of us from voting!), and said he turns to reading and Michelle turns to “HGTV or The Food Channel.” That made me laugh, personally, because I’m always telling my friend if I can’t handle CNN or MSNBC on certain days or nights, I turn to HGTV! Never watched that channel so much as I have this past year!

Democracy doesn’t die if Trump doesn’t get indicted. It doesn’t die if voting rights can’t get 60 votes. It doesn’t die if the filibuster stays. Democracy only dies when you project its survival onto what others do & don’t do the work of it yourself.– Al Giordano

New Report Investigates Manchin’s Coal Ties
As He Haggles Over Build Back Better

“Joe Manchin’s coal ties are investigated in a new report as Build Back Better negotiations continue.
Daniel Boguslaw, who authored this report for The Intercept, joins Joy Reid with the key details.”

  20. October 26, 2021 at 11:31 am

As Sen. Joe Manchin’s Star Rose in West Virginia, the FBI and IRS Probed His Closest Allies
Decades of federal investigations looked into Manchin’s inner circle and business associates.
    by Daniel Boguslaw

(excerpts from a long read worth reading)

“While Manchin continues to serve in the Senate,
he has kept one foot in the private sector through his coal empire,
and both of his children used their connections not to win office but to grow wildly rich.

Manchin’s daughter Heather Bresch received a $30 million golden parachute after finishing her tenure as CEO of Mylan and overseeing the sale of the pharmaceuticals company to Pfizer — a deal that led to the devastating closure of the company’s Morgantown plant. His wife Gayle Manchin now heads the Appalachian Regional Commission, which was created by JFK in 1963 and signed into law in 1965. Years before heading ARC, Gayle served as the head of the National Association of State Boards of Education, where she used her position to require schools to buy the EpiPens her daughter’s company produced.

And Joe Manchin IV is doing well too, running the multimillion-dollar family coal empire
that Manchin the senator reminds voters is kept in a blind trust. Meanwhile, Manchin has objected to a wide swath of the Biden agenda, arguing it could produce an “entitlement mentality” and insisting that any tax credit parents with children get come along with work requirements.”

“Enersystems, which has been owned by the Manchin family for over three decades —
Manchin launched it while serving in the state Senate — purchases low-quality waste coal from mines and resells it to power plants as fuel. In the affidavit, workers also alleged that they had seen an ongoing scheme to crush coal into a size that would be recorded as waste, and could then be hauled for free and sold at a profit by brokers.”

    • October 26, 2021 at 11:32 am

“THE BUFFALO CREEK flows past Manchin’s childhood home in Farmington
before entering Barrackville to the east,
where a mine leased by one of Manchin’s companies spews runoff violating EPA clean water standards.
It rounds a bend through Fairmont where Manchin first solidified his political base, then mixes with the Monongahela River, where a barge worker fell to his death while moving coal from a mine that supplied Enersystems. Beyond Fairmont, the Monongahela’s tributaries stretch eastward, snaking their way toward Washington, D.C.

The waterways that trace Manchin’s political career and carry the toxic sediment his ascension accrued also threaten to deluge West Virginia — surpassed by no other state in terms of its exposure to flood damage, the New York Times reported earlier this week — as rising temperatures threaten to overwhelm the land that Manchin grew up on, then turned around to poison.”

    • October 26, 2021 at 11:36 am

      “In the nation’s capital,
Manchin continues to use his political power to block legislation
that could reverse the planet’s warming trend.

He has quashed Democrats’ hopes of incentivizing the drawdown of fossil fuels
and slashed provisions to empower a green energy transition,
      all while receiving more donations
from the oil, coal, and natural gas industries
than any other senator in the last election cycle.”

  21. October 26, 2021 at 11:48 am

  22. October 26, 2021 at 11:52 am

Joy Reid: “Are West Virginians cheering Joe Manchin on to cut out those things?

    Daniel Boguslaw:
“I think those are wildly popular policies.
    And I think it’s confounding
why both progressives and the Biden administration haven’t spent more time hammering.
    They have tried the carrot.
They have given Joe Manchin`s wife an appointment on the Appalachian Regional Commission.
They have ceded to his every demand.
They have shaved off these hugely important parts of the bill that are going to be critical for the midterms.”

    Reid:
“And I cannot emphasize enough this is the second poorest state in the country,
where people are paying higher electricity bills
to subsidize a dying coal industry,
rather than investing in green jobs.
It’s hard to explain, unless it’s about profit.”

    imo thinkin’…why is the obvious…
our terrifying climate future, the global fallout of climate disaster, migration, drought, wildfires, resource wars….
our children, his children and grandchildren. How the Hell is all of that falling on cloth ears with Manchin?

College Professor Alvin Wolff (1977) taught that some form of supra-national socio-political entity beyond government would manipulate us as a global community. We know it’s been here for some time now in the form of Big Oil and Gas, beholden to nothing and no one, covered up our coming demise for 50 years. Is determined to perpetuate itself like a meme in every head all the way until Planet Earth goes up in smoke.
(FB is different angle on it)

Beyond the cash benefits, what does transnational power O & G have on Manchin?
    –certainly not patriotic.
    thx

Initially it was reported about Baldwin’s set…

Prior to the gun going off that killed the young Cinematographer, Union workers had worked off the set.
They objected to lack of safety on the low-budget set. And they were replaced by non-Union workers.
      Have not heard that since.

For the last couple of months my wife and I have pleaded with my son to get the covid vaccine. We’ve called social services to do some type of intervention, their response to us is that we can’t force him to get the covid vaccine because of his age(16). We’ve had many conversations about the vaccine but he’s stuck on some of the things he’s seen on youtube and other places online. My wife who’s a nurse has explained to him everything under the sun about covid and the vaccine, but to no avail, he’s stuck. We explained everything that could happen to him if he comes down with covid. I love my son with every fiber of my being but it’s like talking to a brick wall when we discuss covid with him. We’ve tried EVERYTHING from soup to nuts, but he’s dug in, and now we just pray that nothing happens to him.

    • October 26, 2021 at 7:08 pm

Don, I feel for you & yr wife. I’ve had so many exhausting discussions & it’s as if hitting a brick wall. I’ve gathered so much info on sides of issue (not from MSM, but hardcore science papers) & simply ask folks to read every damn thing. Then they can make their own decisions.

Don, I feel sorry for all of you! I understand, at least to a point. Our 20 yr. old grandson sounds exactly like your son. He absolutely refuses to get the vaccine. Just like your son, it is things he has seen on You Tube, other places and what friends have told him. However, there is one thing different. He had blood work done last fall and again in August of this year. Both tests showed that he has the antibodies. So at some time, probably last spring, he was asymptomatic and had Covid. How in the world his sister and mom didn’t get it, we do not know. Thankful though!! We all still want so much for him to get the vaccine, but have given up. Good luck! It is tough.

      October 26, 2021 at 10:46 pm

Oh, Don, I’m so sorry to see this. Can’t even imagine being in your position. Very much hoping he decides to get the vaccination.

    • October 26, 2021 at 11:21 pm

thanks for telling this Don. Have some in-laws the same on this issue (who are normally sane).
Wondering if your son usually thinks like you politically or has that changed? Seems by using steady pressure, FaceBook can get people to change their initial position. Pls say more when you can. It hurts that much more when it is your teen.

A Senate committee in Brazil has voted to recommend that President Jair Bolsonaro face charges over his handling of the Covid pandemic.

Seven of the panel’s 11 members backed a report calling for nine charges to be filed against Mr Bolsonaro, including crimes against humanity.

The committee chair, Senator Omar Aziz, will send the findings to Brazil’s prosecutor-general on Wednesday.

Mr Bolsonaro has maintained he is “guilty of absolutely nothing”.

More than 600,000 people in Brazil are confirmed to have died from Covid, second only to the Covid death toll in the United States.

The report accuses the president of misusing public funds and peddling fake news.

There is no guarantee this vote will lead to criminal charges for Mr Bolsonaro, as the report’s recommendations must now be assessed by Brazil’s prosecutor-general, a Bolsonaro appointee who is expected to protect the president.

The vote concludes a six-month inquiry which has revealed scandals and corruption inside Brazil’s government.
