    Leader Schumer:
    To Manchin And Sinema:

Filibuster Reform Or Watch Democracy Die

“To the patriots after the Civil War, this wasn’t partisan—it was patriotic,
and American Democracy is better off today because the patriots in this chamber at that time were undeterred by minority obstruction. Again, today we feel the same way.

Today, the question before the Senate is how we will find a path forward on protecting our freedoms in the 21st century.

Members of this body now face a choice—they can follow in the footsteps of our patriotic predecessors in this chamber.

Or they can sit by as the fabric of our democracy unravels before our very eyes.”

Leading Small Business Groups Demand Filibuster Carve Out For Voting Rights

The coalition representing 400,000 of the nation’s small businesses wrote in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA:

“Since January 1, 2021, at least 18 states enacted more than 30 laws establishing deliberate barriers to casting ballots freely, safely, and equally. Polling has revealed that entrepreneurs, especially those of color, feel disadvantaged within the political system and want equitable access to the lawmakers and votes that impact their livelihoods.

To avert this disastrous disenfranchising impact on our democracy and harm to our economy, leading small business organizations collectively representing nearly 400,000 of our country’s small businesses – Small Business Majority, American Sustainable Business Council, and Main Street Alliance – today called for a carveout within filibuster rules, as proposed by Representative James Clyburn, to start the debate on our right to vote and then pass the Freedom to Vote Act. All Americans deserve equal access to the vote, and a healthy democracy and economy are predicated on allowing all voices to impact the political process.”

Manchin may be feeling the heat…he has no explanations for endangering the planet or democracy.
For example, we might take a closer look at him to try to understand why. imo the threat of a last resort move from him is not surprising, given his gargantuan greed and denial.

Thank you so much for this, our fab GGail⚽! I found this so to my heart! A couple or so decades ago, I went to the heart of all storytelling, recorded elders telling those amazing stories. Came back, spent many, many hours translating those beautiful folktales from original languages into English, yet maintaining the essence. The stories are geared towards children, their literature. Guess what? Even w/ a well-renowned author as my mentor, the story from the publishing houses at that time: there’s no “space” for that genre! Uggh!

Well now! Wish me blessings. Am at it again w/ those same folktales, to get the book published. I love it so much, & must be shared. If I may say so myself, the entire book is so lovely, my heart. Children’s literature. 💖💖

    Senator Angus King:
Delivers Impassioned Speech On the Senate Floor Urging Action to Defend Voting Rights

    • October 21, 2021 at 1:51 pm

“It’s important to remember that most failures of democracy as we look at history,
started with legitimate elections. But once in office, the leader manipulated the electoral process to consolidate their hold on to power, just as was attempted last winter.

And once power is seized, the control and reach of the modern surveillance state is truly terrifying, truly terrifying. Ask the Uyghurs in China, where members of the opposition in Russia – if you can find any alive.

Russia, Turkey, Venezuela, and Hungary, are all examples of the slide from Democracy into Authoritarianism that has happened just in our living memory, just in our lifetimes.
This is not a theoretical threat, we’ve seen it already happen in our lifetimes.
Those countries still have elections, but they don’t mean much.

And what if the current wave of voter suppression legislation succeeds and keeps tens or even hundreds of thousands of people from voting in 2022 or 2024?

Or what if in 2024 a partisan legislature in the swing state – and they are giving themselves this power right now – a partisan legislator in a swing state votes to override the election results in their states and send their own preferred set of electors to Washington?

Then it won’t just be Republicans who distrust elections.
And we will be left with a downward spiral toward a hollow shell of democracy, where only raw power prevails, and its peaceful transfer becomes a distant memory.”

  44. October 21, 2021 at 1:57 pm

    Rachel Maddow:
“Senator Angus King, Independent of Maine,
urging his Senate colleagues to essentially save our democracy.
To save the American experiment by passing the Freedom to Vote Act.
It did not pass today, it did not get a single Republican vote…
Senator Schumer keeps saying, ’Failure is not an option. It can be done’.
It would just need all 50 Democrats to agree to another change in the filibuster rules.
There have been several in recent years. It would require another change in the filibuster rules.
So voting rights bill can pass with a simple majority.
Even very pro filibuster senators like Senator Angus King of Maine have come around to this idea now on this issue. Is it going to happen?”

    Senator Angus King (I-ME):
“Today was a procedural vote to begin debate on the voting rights bill, which got no Republican votes.
It wasn’t a vote on the bill. They didn’t even want to talk about the bill. I think that really, really makes a difference.”
“I think it was 2006 the Voting Rights Act was reinvigorated, or re-voted by something like 96 to nothing.”

    • October 21, 2021 at 2:00 pm

      Senator King:
“Joe’s theory of the filibuster is it forces bipartisanship, it forces the parties to work together.
That theory only works if both of the parties are willing to be at the table.
If one of them just uses it as sheer unadulterated obstruction, which is what happened today,
then democracy has to trump a rule.
The filibuster is not in the Constitution.
We need to restore the Senate to what it was back…when I worked there 40 years ago.
The filibuster was very rarely used.

Now we have to have cloture votes on Deputy Secretaries of Defense! I mean everything requires either a cloture vote for nominees, or 60 votes for anything substantive. That’s not what the framers intended. They didn’t intend a super majority in the Senate, and here we are.

Let me give you one piece of math, Rachel, that I think you’ll find surprising.
You can get 41 votes out of the current Senate which is enough to block any legislation.
If you take the states that those 41 senators represent, add all the population together,
you get 24% of the American people.

So the situation we’re now is that 24% of the American people have an effective veto,
over anything that 76% of the American people think is important public policy.
I don’t think that squares with democratic theory.”

  45. October 21, 2021 at 2:52 pm

“Rachel Maddow reports on the voting rights bill
that Senate Republicans filibustered to failure,
and points out that this was the bill that Joe Manchin wrote himself in place of the Democratic bill
because he said Republicans would vote for it and not use the filibuster.
No Republicans voted for it. ”

    Here: (https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow/watch/manchin-probably-shocked-maybe-embarrassed-that-his-voting-rights-bill-got-no-gop-votes-124212805922)

Continued Republican abuse of filibuster begins to change minds on reform in Senate

    “Senator Angus King,
who had previous voiced opposition to getting rid of the Senate filibuster rule,
talks with Rachel Maddow about how Republican abuse of the rule to block everything without even any debate, even on matters critical to the health of democracy in the United States, is changing his perspective on reforming the filibuster.”

“What I do on any given evening, when I’m doing my job well, is I create a space of common values and shared narrative,” Springsteen told Mason. “For three hours, we create that place. It exists somewhere.”

Gov. Greg Abbott’s pick for top Texas election post worked with Trump
    to fight 2020 results

“As secretary of state, Scott would oversee election administration in Texas —
a task complicated in recent years by baseless claims of widespread election fraud from Republicans in the highest levels of government, fueled by Trump. The former president has filed a flurry of lawsuits nationwide and called for audits in Texas and elsewhere to review the results of the 2020 presidential elections.

reduces influence of voters of color

“The Texas Legislature has signed off on new congressional districts that shore up the GOP’s dominance and yield little ground to the people of color who have driven the state’s growth.”

“Texas lawmakers have redrawn political maps for the state’s congressional, House, Senate and Board of Education districts. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has not signed these maps into law yet,
      though he is expected to.”

      District 33
In 2020, this district voted 25.6% for Trump and 73% for Biden, and Biden won by 47.4 percentage points. This district is represented by U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey D.
–Among eligible voters, this district has: No race or ethnicity more than 50%

      District 6

Veterans on Sen. Sinema’s advisory council quit,
accusing her of being ‘one of the principal obstacles to progress’

“Five veterans on Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s advisory council resigned,
accusing the centrist Arizona Democrat of being “one of the principal obstacles to progress” because she refuses to back key provisions of President Biden’s agenda that “support our veteran community and protect the very heart and soul of our nation.”

    • October 22, 2021 at 12:18 pm

“In a scathing letter obtained by The New York Times,
the veterans took Ms. Sinema to task for her refusal to abolish the filibuster
and her opposition to parts of Mr. Biden’s multitrillion-dollar social safety net, education, climate and tax plan, stances that have stymied some of his top priorities.

“You have become one of the principal obstacles to progress,
answering to big donors rather than your own people,”
the veterans wrote in a letter that is to be featured in a new advertisement by Common Defense,
a progressive veterans’ activist group that has targeted Ms. Sinema.

“We shouldn’t have to buy representation from you, and your failure to stand by your people and see their urgent needs is alarming.”
