And Colin Powell at only 84. He had multiple myeloma which complicated treatment for Covid, despite being fully vaccinated. He didn’t get the protection from herd immunity because we haven’t gotten close to achieving it; there are too many anti-vaxxers refusing the dictates of public health

      The future of our planet
      must not depend on
      Manchin’s preoccupation with
nine thousand coal miners in his state
      = 9,000 coal miners.

—-West Virginians want the 3.5T infrastructure bill—-

    The Guardian:
In deep red West Virginia, Biden’s $3.5tn spending proposal is immensely popular
Working-class people – even Trump voters – understand the Build Back Better plan will benefit them.”

“Conservative backing appears even more robust in West Virginia, home of Manchin,
a moderate Democrat who is one of the critical holdouts on the budget bill and whose efforts could derail the entire plan – or see large chunks of it scrapped as he balks at the budget’s price tag.

But according to the survey, 80% of more than 800 people surveyed in his home state
believe he should vote to pass the bill.

That includes 77% of conservatives who responded to the survey.”

The National Hockey League has suspended San Jose Sharks’ forward Evander Kane after an investigation found that he submitted a forged vaccination card earlier this year. He will be barred from playing for 21 games and forgo $1.68 million of his $7 million salary, with the forfeited cash going toward the league’s Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. “We are extremely disappointed by his disregard for the health and safety protocols put in place by the NHL and the [National Hockey League Players’ Association],” the San Jose Sharks said in a statement following the announcement by the league. Kane, who did not play in Sunday’s season opener, said in his own statement that he “made a mistake, one I sincerely regret and take responsibility for.”

I have a very difficult time watching the mainstream press as they do their very best to demean and sabotage Biden’s anything…esp after the insurrectionist named Donald Trump damn near overthrew the election and continues to use a battering ram on the door of democracy MSNBC…still uses the same stale white faces to push that agenda…i just can’t any more…

I’ve been bothered by that for a long time, too … but what I’m really enjoying lately is that when a guest is on MSNBC who’s asked one of those leading questions about Biden, so many of the Democratic elected officials on camera speak in respectful, glowing and friendly terms about him instead. This week, in particular. The damn media can take a hike, but the reps and senators are seeing the good. Tonight a couple of them were quoting Joe, and acting like they understand what he’s been telling them in these closed-door meetings. I hope that keeps up.

      Hang in there!

Good West Coast morning Nerdy & TOD family.

My thoughts are on the late Gen. Colin Powell this morning.

Over his long career in the military, he was a Black man who was a willing member of the GOP. He was also the one who spoke publicly that there were “weapons of mass destruction” that led us into a needless war. He carried the water. He struck the match.

    For. The. GOP.

He didn’t “see the light” and renounce the GOP until late in his life. I would like to think that he had regrets about his missteps (as we all do regarding our own).

    Canonize tho’, I think not.

These are my own personal Opinion.

House Jan. 6 committee votes to hold Bannon in contempt

“Lawmakers on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol unanimously voted
in support of holding Stephen K. Bannon in contempt on Tuesday. The seven Democrats and two Republicans tasked with investigating the insurrection all supported the resolution recommending that the House find the former adviser to Donald Trump in criminal contempt of Congress for refusal to comply with a subpoena issued by the committee.

The vote could be taken up by the full House as early as this week.
The matter would then be referred to the Justice Department. Contempt of Congress is a misdemeanor criminal offense that can result in up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

“We believe Mr. Bannon has information relevant to our probe, and we’ll use the tools at our disposal to get that information,” committee Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.)
said in opening remarks before the vote Tuesday.

“I expect that the House will quickly adopt this referral to the Justice Department and that the U.S. attorney will do his duty and prosecute Mr. Bannon for criminal contempt of Congress.”

    “People vs. Fossil Fuels”:
Over 530 Arrested in Historic Indigenous-Led Climate Protests in D.C.

“This week over 530 climate activists were arrested
during Indigenous-led civil disobedience actions in Washington, D.C.,
calling on President Joe Biden to declare a climate emergency and stop approving fossil fuel projects.
Indigenous leaders have issued a series of demands, including the abolition of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, whose offices they occupied on Thursday for the first time since the 1970s. The protests come just weeks before the start of the critical U.N. climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, which President Biden and senior Cabinet members are expected to attend. “We’re not going anywhere,” says Siqiñiq Maupin, with Sovereign Iñupiat for a Living Arctic, who traveled from Alaska to D.C. and was among those arrested during the BIA occupation.
“We do not have time for negotiations, for compromises. We need to take this serious and take action now.”
We also speak with Joye Braun, with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the Indigenous Environmental Network, who was deeply involved in the Standing Rock protests to stop the Dakota Access pipeline. “
The United States government brought the frontlines to us, to the Indigenous people, to our doorsteps,”
says Braun. “And we wanted to bring the frontlines to his doorstep to let him see that we are very serious about climate change and declaring a climate emergency.”

Ian Bassin, founder and executive director, Protect Democracy,
    to Chris Hayes:

“And I think it’s important to remember what the stakes are here,
which is that Steve Bannon and Donald Trump
very much want the failed Coup attempt of last fall to be practice for a future successful Coup attempt.
And one way to do that is to do what Trump and Bannon have been trying to do since day one,
which is to prove that rules don’t matter,
that laws are for losers that,
    they are above the law.
And for a long time, they’ve really gotten away with that…”

    • October 20, 2021 at 1:31 pm

      Bassin:
“But for most of the leadership of this country,
they are looking at what is a 5-alarm fire
      that is engulfing our democracy
and walking slowly over to it with a bucket of water.
And that is NOT what it is going to take to protect our democracy right now.

If you look at what’s going on –
what is leading to this January 6 Committee and the Bannon defiance of a subpoena.
It is straight out of a playbook that every scholar that has studied the downfall of democracy around the world warned is the playbook, right?

There’s six things that every autocrat around the world
      has done to dismantle democracies:
They have politicized independent institutions, like law enforcement, the civil service.
      They’ve spread disinformation.
      They’ve quashed dissent.
      They’ve corrupted elections.
      They’ve attacked vulnerable populations,
and they’ve sought to undermine checks and balances.
Donald Trump has tried to do all of them.

And he’s trying to do the undermining of checks and balances with his accomplice Steve Bannon right here.
And unless our institutions starts stepping up,
we are going to see a successful coup in the future
In the way that the last one failed.”
