Rudy Giuliani, under oath, reveals baseless origins of Trump Big Lie claims

“Rachel Maddow reads excerpts from the transcript of a deposition, under oath,
of Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani in which he explains that he can’t remember but thinks some of the conspiracy theories he pushed about the 2020 election came from social media and he didn’t bother to check the truthfulness of the claims from his bombshell source who claimed the election was stolen.”

“The bad faith election reviews in Wisconsin
are part of a larger trend in states across the country
sparked by the conspiracy theory-fueled work of the Cyber Ninjas in Maricopa County, Arizona.
States United and Law Forward are national leaders in tracking these 2020 election reviews and convening bipartisan election experts to expose the legal, procedural, and cultural risks to states attempting these operations. Earlier this month, States United released an interested parties memo
outlining the key ways in which the election reviews in Wisconsin mirror
the problematic Cyber Ninjas effort in Arizona,
    including the lack of credibility,
    lack of transparency,
    cost to taxpayers,
    the bipartisan opposition,
    security risks and legal concerns,
and lack of public support. ”

Obama Scholars meet President and Mrs. Obama in Chicago

As part of our groundbreaking festivities, the newest class of Obama Scholars at the University of Chicago joined President and Mrs. Obama for a conversation about leadership, self-care, and the future Obama Presidential Center that will call the South Side of Chicago home. You can learn more about the Scholars program at Obama.org/scholars.

Read Mrs. Obamaโ€™s remarks at the Centerโ€™s groundbreaking!

On Tuesday, September 28, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot joined President and Mrs. Obama at the ceremonial groundbreaking for the Obama Presidential Center.

“Too often, this gorgeous park felt like something to drive through or go around to get somewhere else.
And as I grew up and left my neighborhood to attend Whitney Young, I gained greater exposure to this magical city, riding hours, and I mean hours, every day, back and forth on the Number 6 Jeffery Express, I was able to see more of what Chicago had to offer, but I continued to ask myself, why didnโ€™t we have more places to gather and connect in our neighborhood? Why didnโ€™t our part of town draw people from around the world, just like Grant Park or Navy Pier or the Art Institute. Why wasnโ€™t there more investment in us?

So, when it came time to decide where weโ€™d build the OPC, Barack and I knew this was a unique opportunity to change that narrative, to help elevate the way kids, like me and like Zell, felt about their neighborhoods and, in turn, about themselves. Because this center is not about us. Itโ€™s about the generations that came before us,
the folks who did the heavy lifting, the ones who made Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama possible.”

NASA held a virtual media briefing last Tuesday:
“to preview the launch of the agencyโ€™s first spacecraft to study Jupiterโ€™s Trojan asteroids.
The Trojan asteroids are remnants of the early solar system clustered in two โ€œswarmsโ€ leading and following Jupiter in its path around the Sun.”

Launch period opens October 16th for 21 days.
In a virtual platform five panelists discuss the science of Lucy.

“Lucy will pass the main belt asteroid on the way out to the Trojans (2025),
then 5 Trojan encounters between 2027 and 2033 for a total of seven objects, because one of our objects recently been discovered to have a satellite by the Hubble Space Telescope…my favorite is a binary asteroid, two objects roughly the same size in circular orbits from one another…”

Women’s March targets Supreme Court, with abortion on line

Politico: Many thousands of women filled a square near the White House for a rally before the march.
“The first Women’s March of the Biden administration headed straight for the steps of the Supreme Court on Saturday, part of nationwide protests that drew thousands to Washington to demand continued access to abortion in a year when conservative lawmakers and judges have put it in jeopardy.”

“Before heading out on the march, they rallied in a square near the White House, waving signs that said
    โ€œMind your own uterus.””

    Senator Sanders:
‘Not my understanding’ that Biden called for lower price on reconciliation bill

“That is not my understanding of what he said,” Sanders replied. “What he said is there’s going to have to be give and take on both sides. I’m not clear that he did bring forth a specific number.”

“But what the president also said, and what all of us are saying, is that maybe the time is now for us to stand up to powerful special interests who are currently spending hundreds of millions of dollars trying to prevent us from doing what the American people want,” he added.

“this is not a wish list. Climate change and cutting carbon emissions has everything to do with whether or not we leave this planet to future generations that is healthy and is habitable,” said Sanders.

“You have to have a skilled workforce. We can’t have a skilled workforce and do the good jobs that are out there unless we train young people. That’s why we want to make community colleges tuition-free. So this is not a wish list. This is what the working families of this country want and what the economy needs.”

A former Facebook whistleblower responsible for a series of bombshell leaks has revealed her identity.

Frances Haugen, 37, who worked as a product manager on the vivid misinformation team at Facebook, was interviewed on Sunday by CBS.

She said the documents she leaked proved that Facebook repeatedly prioritised “growth over safety”.

Facebook said the leaks were misleading and glossed over positive research conducted by the company.

In the interview, on CBS’s 60 Minutes programme, Ms Haugen said she had left Facebook earlier this year after becoming exasperated with the company. Before departing, she copied a series of internal memos and documents.

She shared those documents with the Wall Street Journal, which has been releasing the material in batches over the last three weeks – sometimes referred to as the Facebook Files.

Revelations included documents that showed that celebrities, politicians and high profile Facebook users were treated differently by the company. The leaks revealed that moderation policies were applied differently or not at all to such accounts – a system known as XCheck (cross-check).

Another leak showed that Facebook was also facing a complex lawsuit from a group of its own shareholders.

The group alleges, among other things, that Facebook’s $5bn (ยฃ3.65bn) payment to the US Federal Trade Commission to resolve the Cambridge Analytica data scandal was so high because it was designed to protect Mark Zuckerberg from personal liability.

But its allegations about Instagram that have been particularly worrying to US politicians.

nternal research by Facebook (which owns Instagram) found that Instagram was impacting the mental health of teenagers but did not share its findings when they suggested that the platform was a “toxic” place for many youngsters.

According to slides reported by the Wall Street Journal, 32% of teenage girls surveyed said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse.

Ms Haugen will testify before a Senate subcommittee on Tuesday in a hearing titled “Protecting Kids Online”, about the company’s research into Instagram’s effect on the mental health of young users.

    thrilla from pramila
    by Sarah Lazarus on Crooked.

    Meanwhile, it is now October,
the spooky month in which the government will default on its debt and cause a disastrous recession unless somebody does something. Senior White House officials have reportedly decided that it will need to be Congress, having reviewed alternative options to raising the debt limit like โ€œminting the sickest coin in the worldโ€ and โ€œignoring the debt limit, which is stupid, and continuing to make payments anyway.โ€ Since Democratic leaders have ruled out creating more borrowing authority via reconciliation, and Republicans have blocked them from doing so with a majority vote, it increasingly looks like Democrats will either reform the filibuster or the economy will blow up.

Texas is determined to send no Hurricane Harvey relief funding whatsoever to Houston,
which sustained the most deaths and damage in Hurricane Harvey. The Texas General Land Office released a revised plan for distributing billions in federal aid, after first awarding $0 to both Harris County and the city of Houston.

The new proposal would send $750 million to Harris County, and still nothing at all to Houston, when both county and city leaders say they need $1 billion each to complete flood control projects in the most vulnerable communities. The Houston Chronicle found that the GLO, when distributing the federal funding, used scoring criteria that disproportionately awarded aid to less populous inland counties over the larger coastal counties that are most exposed to hurricanes and flooding. Could the fact that those coastal counties tend to elect Democrats have anything to do with it? Alas, a mystery for the ages.

Some 60,000 members of the International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE)
have begun voting on whether to authorize a strike, which would be the first in the unionโ€™s history. IATSEs primary issue is workersโ€™ ungodly long work days: Production workers in film and TV have long been expected to put in 14-hour days, and the growth of the streaming industry has erased any downtime between projects. IATSE is fighting for a 10-hour minimum turnaround between production days, better rest periods within the work day, and higher pay, among other improvements, and negotiations have broken down with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers after four months of talks. The authorization vote is expected to pass by a huge margin, which wouldnโ€™t necessarily mean the union will go on strike. If it does, production on the vast majority of movies and TV shows will be forced to shut down.
