which is something I feel like has fallen out of the national discussion recently, is testing.
He said that he will use the Defense Production Act to increase the supply of rapid at-home tests and make them more affordable. He said places like Walmart, Amazon, and Kroger will begin to supply those tests
at cost as soon as next week.
Can you talk from a scientific perspective about how testing fits into this muscular new approach?
How Americans in our private lives, particularly if we have access to tests we can buy ourselves at an affordable rate, how we should think about testing in our lives now moving forward?”
Dr. Kessler:
“I can talk just personally as a pediatrician, as a grandfather. I get a phone call it’s 9:00 at night:
‘My grandchild has a fever, has some symptoms’. Kids get runny noses, fevers always all the time, but you want to know. You want to know whether this is COVID because there are things you can do.
And the fact is having at-home tests, this is a big deal. Getting a real discount by these companies that you can order, these in-home tests. You want to have an in-home test.
You run it and you can know in 15, 30 minutes whether this is COVID or this is just a typical cold.
It’s very important.
We have to give people the tools, especially when it comes to our kids.
You know we have to create environments that protect them. Most important thing to protect them is having communities that are vaccinated, families that are vaccinated. These tests can make a real difference in people’s lives, in families’ lives.”
Maddow:
“Dr. Kessler, one of the other reasons that testing is so important, and you and I talked about this.
I think you and I had one of the earliest televised conversations on this topic since the start of the pandemic. But if you do know that you have COVID early enough, if you can catch it before you become seriously ill enough that you need to be hospitalized, you do have a treatment option
that you don’t have if you wait until you get sicker, later on in the course of the disease.
And that is these monoclonal antibody treatments….they need to take those treatments before they are too terribly sick.
The President today talked about increasing the pace of monoclonal antibody shipments across the country, upping it by 50%. We’ve seen demand for these treatments go way up over the summer,
a lot more uptake of these treatments. How do you think that part of the pandemic response is going, and how hopeful do you feel about those treatments?”
Kessler:
“I’m very hopeful about those treatment treatments. Those treatments work.
The fact is on July 1st, we were shipping 10,000 of these regimens a week. We increased that dramatically to over 100,000. And we’re committed to sending out 150,000 a week.” So a big uptake.
Obviously the downside of that is Delta is requiring us to use more. We want to get that curve down.
But if you test positive and you are at risk for hospitalization, if you are at high risk, you should get monoclonal antibodies.”
Had a fab conversation recently with an elderly man who turned out to be a pretty famous chess player.
As we parted ways the topic turned to the virus. He called Trump names and had a lot of negative towards the pharmaceutical industry, which he said is making too much profit. And he was sour on the vaccine.

Dr. David Kessler, Chief Science Officer of the Biden Administration’s Covid Response,
talks with Rachel Maddow about the importance of easy access to rapid Covid tests, especially for parents who are frequently faced with the question of whether their child’s cold symptoms are typical sniffles or something more serious.”
Affordable rapid home testing.
Rachel Maddow:
“The other thing that the President talked about today,
which is something I feel like has fallen out of the national discussion recently, is testing.
He said that he will use the Defense Production Act to increase the supply of rapid at-home tests and make them more affordable. He said places like Walmart, Amazon, and Kroger will begin to supply those tests
at cost as soon as next week.
Can you talk from a scientific perspective about how testing fits into this muscular new approach?
How Americans in our private lives, particularly if we have access to tests we can buy ourselves at an affordable rate, how we should think about testing in our lives now moving forward?”
Dr. Kessler:
“I can talk just personally as a pediatrician, as a grandfather. I get a phone call it’s 9:00 at night:
‘My grandchild has a fever, has some symptoms’. Kids get runny noses, fevers always all the time, but you want to know. You want to know whether this is COVID because there are things you can do.
And the fact is having at-home tests, this is a big deal. Getting a real discount by these companies that you can order, these in-home tests. You want to have an in-home test.
You run it and you can know in 15, 30 minutes whether this is COVID or this is just a typical cold.
It’s very important.
We have to give people the tools, especially when it comes to our kids.
You know we have to create environments that protect them. Most important thing to protect them is having communities that are vaccinated, families that are vaccinated. These tests can make a real difference in people’s lives, in families’ lives.”
Monoclonal antibody treatments work.
Maddow:
“Dr. Kessler, one of the other reasons that testing is so important, and you and I talked about this.
I think you and I had one of the earliest televised conversations on this topic since the start of the pandemic. But if you do know that you have COVID early enough, if you can catch it before you become seriously ill enough that you need to be hospitalized, you do have a treatment option
that you don’t have if you wait until you get sicker, later on in the course of the disease.
And that is these monoclonal antibody treatments….they need to take those treatments before they are too terribly sick.
The President today talked about increasing the pace of monoclonal antibody shipments across the country, upping it by 50%. We’ve seen demand for these treatments go way up over the summer,
a lot more uptake of these treatments. How do you think that part of the pandemic response is going, and how hopeful do you feel about those treatments?”
Kessler:
“I’m very hopeful about those treatment treatments. Those treatments work.
The fact is on July 1st, we were shipping 10,000 of these regimens a week. We increased that dramatically to over 100,000. And we’re committed to sending out 150,000 a week.” So a big uptake.
Obviously the downside of that is Delta is requiring us to use more. We want to get that curve down.
But if you test positive and you are at risk for hospitalization, if you are at high risk, you should get monoclonal antibodies.”
Had a fab conversation recently with an elderly man who turned out to be a pretty famous chess player.
As we parted ways the topic turned to the virus. He called Trump names and had a lot of negative towards the pharmaceutical industry, which he said is making too much profit. And he was sour on the vaccine.
As he is math minded obviously, I asked him to look at the global data and high death toll. Then said i hoped to see him again, but might not if he went unvaccinated. But quickly, how quickly he relented and was open to the data and the vaccine…
Am thinking that as the home-style rapid tests will not be government sponsored and will be available at cost, some of this kind of thinking about profiteering might change.

LA County voted to mandate vaccinations for all students 12 years and over.

“This fall as our schools have reopened, despite all of those multi layered protection strategies,
we’re seeing increased case rates due to the Delta variant and outbreaks at our schools.
So we know that if we want to keep our schools safe and open for students to learn and thrive, this is a necessary step. And vaccinations are the single best way to protect our students individually and collectively from the threat of COVID-19.”
HAYES: “Was it a unanimous vote?”
GOMEZ: “It was unanimous vote, yes.”
HAYES:
“And what is parent reception been like as you move towards this process in the wake of this sort of previewing of the announcement yesterday?”
GOMEZ:
“You know I’m a Mom of two young kids myself too young to be vaccinated.
And I know how hard it is as a parent in this pandemic, to know exactly what’s the best way to keep your children safe. So we know in a district where we serve 500,000 kids that not every family is going to agree with this step.
And there’s legitimate reasons why. There`s been intentional misinformation from people like Donald Trump and his allies. We know that our Black and Brown communities have experienced discrimination and the medical system in the past. And so it`s understandable that parents have legitimate questions and concerns.
And we are here to answer them, to have compassionate conversations with every family.
So that they know the science and the facts about the vaccine, and that they can meet this mandate when it kicks in January of 2022.”
HAYES:
“So it’s going to be January 2022. Are you also offering on school site vaccination? Or are you relying on the network that exists already?”
GOMEZ:
“So we have already provided opportunities to be vaccinated at all of our secondary schools.
We relaunched mobile vaccination clinics which are going to every Middle and High school in the district this fall. And we have community vaccination clinics where students can get vaccinated as well as their family members.
And we really want to emphasize to our community that these vaccines are free, they’re safe, effective.
It doesn`t matter if you have health insurance or what your immigration status is. The vaccine is available to you
at your local public school.”
