Remarks by President Biden on the End of the War in Afghanistan
    (excerpts)

    “The bottom line:
Ninety [Ninety-eight] percent of Americans in Afghanistan who wanted to leave were able to leave.

And for those remaining Americans, there is no deadline. We remain committed to get them out if they want to come out. Secretary of State Blinken is leading the continued diplomatic efforts to ensure a safe passage for any American, Afghan partner, or foreign national who wants to leave Afghanistan.”

“The Taliban has made public commitments, broadcast on television and radio across Afghanistan,
on safe passage for anyone wanting to leave, including those who worked alongside Americans. We don’t take them by their word alone but by their actions, and we have leverage to make sure those commitments are met.

    Let me be clear:
Leaving August the 31st is not due to an arbitrary deadline; it was designed to save American lives.”

“My predecessor, the former President, signed an agreement with the Taliban to remove U.S. troops by May the 1st, just months after I was inaugurated. It included no requirement that the Taliban work out a cooperative governing arrangement with the Afghan government, but it did authorize the release of 5,000 prisoners last year, including some of the Taliban’s top war commanders, among those who just took control of Afghanistan.

And by the time I came to office, the Taliban was in its strongest military position since 2001, controlling or contesting nearly half of the country.

The previous administration’s agreement said that if we stuck to the May 1st deadline that they had signed on to leave by, the Taliban wouldn’t attack any American forces, but if we stayed, all bets were off.

So we were left with a simple decision:
Either follow through on the commitment made by the last administration and leave Afghanistan, or say we weren’t leaving and commit another tens of thousands more troops going back to war.

That was the choice — the real choice — between leaving or escalating.

I was not going to extend this forever war, and I was not extending a forever exit.
The decision to end the military airlift operations at Kabul airport was based on the unanimous recommendation of my civilian and military advisors — the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and all the service chiefs, and the commanders in the field.”

“And to ISIS-K: We are not done with you yet.”

“This decision about Afghanistan is not just about Afghanistan. It’s about ending an era of major military operations to remake other countries.”

“After 20 years of war in Afghanistan, I refused to send another generation of America’s sons and daughters to fight a war that should have ended long ago.

After more than $2 trillion spent in Afghanistan — a cost that researchers at Brown University estimated would be over $300 million a day for 20 years in Afghanistan — for two decades — yes, the American people should hear this: $300 million a day for two decades.”

    “I give you my word:
With all of my heart, I believe this is the right decision, a wise decision, and the best decision for America.”

Good morning friends, Every day sees a little improvement. The fatigue is REAL though. I finally got my infusion for psoriatic arthritis yesterday morning. The pain in my toes is lessened considerably! I’m back to cooking and do okay with that though am ready to rest by the time I finish. This morning, I’ve done a little cleaning. Whew, that’s different than cooking. My husband and I together will get it done by the end of the day.

Male Dominated Mainstream Media Virtually Ignores SCOTUS Letting Texas Kill Roe v. Wade
“The Supreme Court conservative majority’s refusal to act should have been the biggest story in the country this morning.

THE MAJORITY OF THE US POPULATION JUST LOST A FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT.

Sarah Jones noted that control of reproductive rights is a cornerstone of authoritarianism:
“Controlling reproduction has nothing to do with Christianity.
The Bible is being used as cover for the power grab.
Women will die as a result of this SCOTUS.
Women will be terrorized. It incentivized rape by controlling men.
We knew this was coming. Sorry so few people cared.”

Statement by President Joe Biden on Texas Law SB8

“Today, Texas law SB8 went into effect.
This extreme Texas law blatantly violates the constitutional right established under Roe v. Wade and upheld as precedent for nearly half a century.

The Texas law will significantly impair women’s access to the health care they need,
particularly for communities of color and individuals with low incomes. And, outrageously,
it deputizes private citizens to bring lawsuits against anyone who they believe has helped another person get an abortion, which might even include family members, health care workers, front desk staff at a health care clinic,
or strangers with no connection to the individual.

My administration is deeply committed to the constitutional right established in Roe v. Wade nearly five decades ago and will protect and defend that right.”

Montana rule urges schools to give parents say on masks

“HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte announced a rule Tuesday that encourages schools to give parents final say on whether children should wear facial coverings after several large districts imposed mask requirements amid surging COVID-19 infections in the state.

It comes a day after the U.S. Department of Education opened civil rights investigations into five Republican-led states that have banned or limited mask requirements in schools, saying the policies could amount to discrimination against students with disabilities or health conditions.

Gianforte, a Republican, stopped short of issuing an outright order. Still, medical experts said the rule would likely weaken public trust in masks as an effective tool to combat COVID-19.”

    Chris Hayes and Ian Ba
ssin on “Sheer intimidation politics” (Hayes)
McCarthy and Greene threatened the telecommunication companies after congressional phone records were subpoenaed, which is routine.

    Ian Bassin,
Former Associate WH Counsel under President Obama:

“I think it’s worse than an ethics violation.
What McCarthy essentially did is something that I`ve been calling “autocratic capture”.
Which is when authoritarian government actors use government power to bully private businesses
into being their political allies. Or in this case their political lackeys.
It’s something the Mubarak regime did in Egypt for decades.
It`s what Vladimir Putin does in Russia.
It`s what Tucker Carlson’s hero Viktor Orbán does in Hungary.
It’s not a dynamic that ANY American CEO should want to take hold here.
And if they give in to this behavior they’re going to embolden it. So I think what the American private sector needs to be talking about is forming a NATO Article 5 mutual defense pact. That if autocratic politicians are going to come after one of them, they’re going to come after all of them.
Let McCarthy take on the entire American private sector.”

    • September 2, 2021 at 2:15 pm

      Hayes:
“…the private sector…the major elements of it are hugely lobbying against the Biden reconciliation proposal. They have been very aligned with Mitch McConnell. They’ve been very aligned with the Republican Party in many respects…

But Marjorie Taylor Greene was on Tucker Carlson last night and goes even further…
Greene: “These telecommunications companies, if they go along with this, they will be shut down, and that’s a promise.” Carlson: “Good. I hope they’re afraid of you. They should be…”

      Bassin:
“Yes and I think it actually may send a different message than they intend to American companies,
because CEOs are now faced with the choice. They can have a future in which they take direction from Donald Trump, and Marjorie Taylor-Greene, and Kevin McCarthy. Or they can have a future in which they take direction from markets and customers and their bottom line.
And I think for a long time these CEOs have tried to stay on the sidelines or even handed, right?
As you mentioned they donate to both sides. They’ve tried to stay above what they consider the partisan fray because they don’t want to alienate their employees or customers.

I think what McCarthy is basically making clear to them is they can stay above that fray no longer.
They (CEOs) need to double down on the rule of law and democracy
if they want to actually operate in a free society in the future.
Because if they try to avoid what they think of as the partisan trade, it`s going to come and find them at a time of its choosing, not theirs.”

Trump Supporters Use The Taliban As A Role Model For Overthrowing The Government

“Extremist Trump supporters are praising the Taliban and citing them as inspiration for overthrowing the US government.”

“”Several concerning trends have emerged in recent weeks on online platforms commonly used by
anti-government, White supremacist and other domestic violent extremist groups, including “framing the activities of the Taliban as a success,” and a model for those who believe in the need for a civil war in the US,
the head of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis, John Cohen,
said on a call Friday with local and state law enforcement, obtained by CNN.””

      Easley:
“The Republican Party Is Fostering A Growing Threat To The US Government
The Republican Party has become a safe haven for domestic terrorists.
It is a place where they can openly advance their agenda of overthrowing democracy in the United States,
and they get support from members of Congress.
Extremists who view themselves as kindred spirits with the Taliban are a danger to America.

    imvho,
The anti-vaccine trump suicide terrorists have given us a taste of what they’re prepared to do.
In what’s left of their minds, Trump the chosen one is anointed by Jesus. Of course their Jesus only loves white men who reject women, LGBTQ, people of color, willing to die for the cause, willing to die unvaccinated and take their families with them because they’re going to heaven. Not wrapping themselves in explosives yet
but saving you from pretend ‘liberal fascists’. McCarthy and McConnell knowingly manipulate the worker bees who believe they’re invincible = no mask or vaccine required. Not quite ready to blow themselves up with bombs, but they’re willing to blow YOU up and the planet, with a virus, a never ending pandemic, deadly insurrection.

(Now they’re all upset for being arrested. Putin and his lackeys play American right wing populists for fools
but apparently they don’t see it.)
