It never fails, no matter their religious affiliation. But some look for the distinction of catching COVID-19 when 3 vaccines are available.

“Burke has turned his attention away from the operations of the Catholic Church to how governments around the world have handled the ongoing COVID pandemic. In December 2020, he referred to it as the “Wuhan virus,” and warned the pandemic was a ploy for governments to manipulate them. Later, in May 2020, he spoke out against mandatory vaccinations, saying “some” in society want to implant microchips in people.”

      I mean, really???

Only three embassies left in Kabul as India also departs

India has become the latest country to evacuate its embassy in Kabul, with a special flight bringing the country’s ambassador and other staff members back to India.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Arimdam Bagchi, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said the decision had been made to move them back “immediately”.

That leaves only three embassies operating in Kabul – Russia, China, and Pakistan.

Indonesia has said it will retain a “small diplomatic mission” in the country although it is also evacuating its embassy.

Russia earlier said it would only partially evacuate its embassy staff. Its ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov is set to meet the Taliban later today.

The three embassies tells us the whole story.

Remarks by President Biden on Afghanistan

“I stand squarely behind my decision.
After 20 years, I’ve learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw U.S. forces.”

“We will continue to support the Afghan people.
We will lead with our diplomacy, our international influence, and our humanitarian aid.
We’ll continue to push for regional diplomacy and engagement to prevent violence and instability.
We’ll continue to speak out for the basic rights of the Afghan people — of women and girls — just as we speak out all over the world.
I have been clear that human rights must be the center of our foreign policy, not the periphery.
    But the way to do it is not through endless military deployments;
it’s with our diplomacy, our economic tools, and rallying the world to join us.’

“Our current military mission will be short in time, limited in scope, and focused in its objectives:
Get our people and our allies to safety as quickly as possible.
And once we have completed this mission,
we will conclude our military withdrawal.
We will end America’s longest war after 20 long years of bloodshed.”

Michael Beschloss, presidential historian, author “Presidents of War”,
    to Mehdi Hasan:

“Yes I think in terms of defending his decision, Joe Biden did the right thing and defended it really bluntly today. Oftentimes presidents as you know Mehdi, don’t tell you what’s really on their mind. He said what is the absolute truth. And I would say as an historian and Joe Biden studies history too – you look at presidents get involved in wars. They should never carry on a war and put American young people at risk if the American people no longer support that war, and if they don’t understand why we’re there.

We have been an America’s longest war – 20 years in Afghanistan.
And the public support as public opinion polls will show in both parties and everyone else, ran out for the war in Afghanistan a long time ago. So essentially Joe Biden was faced with a decision between ‘Can I convince Americans it’s a great idea to keep this going?’- which I don’t think he felt he could because he certainly didn’t believe it. Or ‘Do I take the troops out?’ And basically end this, reflecting the movement of American public opinion.”

Afghan women look for escape from Taliban:

“Atia Abawi, former Kabul bureau chief for NBC News,
talks with Rachel Maddow about desperation of Afghan women facing a Taliban crackdown with no means of escape unless the U.S. or its allies can evacuate them. “‘There’s no one to help. They’re stuck there.’

    Here: (https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow/watch/-there-s-no-one-to-help-they-re-stuck-there-afghan-women-look-for-escape-from-taliban-118840901912)

    • August 17, 2021 at 1:01 pm

      Atia Abawi:
“But we saw a lot of achievements the last 20 years.
We saw girls going to school. We saw women in the workplace, in the government, running for president. These last 20 years were worth it for the Afghan people. And unfortunately right now it is mourning. They are mourning. Anyone who knows Afghanistan, who has been to Afghanistan, met an Afghan from Afghanistan who has achieved so much these last 20 years, they are in mourning as well.”

“And I personally don’t know what to do but I’m trying. I’m trying.
I’m talking to a female commando, two sisters who are part of the Afghan special operations who are trained by U.S. service members, who are now hiding from the Taliban. The Taliban went into their home. Luckily they escaped just minutes beforehand because they saw them outside. This is in Kabul. I’m begging people to let them come in to the Kabul military airport. They said they would sleep on the ground.
They said they know they would die outside of those gates.
But there is no one to help. They’re stuck there.

A female politician that I was talking to, she had no idea this was going to happen.
And now the Taliban have sent people to stay right in front of her house, trapping her inside with her three daughters. She can’t get out. She could try to get out, but the problem is she said “Even if I try to get out right now, I couldn’t make it to the airport. No one is there to let me in”.
So these are our friends we left without any way out.”

    Michael Hinojosa,
Superintendent for the Dallas Independent School District yesterday:

“It was nothing short of phenomenal.
We had over 140,000 students go to school today,
and I have reports that there were 3 students who were not compliant.
Two at one high school and another student..
We asked them to comply, we told them we were going to make them do it, but we had no confrontations today. So that tells me we have a lot of support in this community and in this city.”

—-Congrats, well done! Wow, imo just shows to go you that we want our children to live. And we want to be here to see them grow up.

    Last week.

Senator Chris Murphy, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism:
“The Taliban surge is a reason to stick to the withdrawal plan.
Staying one more year in Afghanistan means we stay forever. Because if 20 years of laborious training and equipping of the Afghan security forces have this little impact on their ability to fight, then another 50 years wouldn’t change anything.”

  48. August 17, 2021 at 2:08 pm

Major Matt Zeller, cofounder of No One Left Behind,
an organization dedicated to bringing Afghan Interpreters safely to the U.S.,
Captain in the US Army Reserve, former CIA officer, speaking to Rachel Maddow.

    Maddow:
“Tell me about what can be done. I ask you that first because I am so clear that you have been sounding the alarm warning that it was going to go this way for so long. You were right for weeks and months before this finally happened…what can be done now?”

    Major Zeller:
“The first thing I’d ask is that the President of the United States takes a meeting with our team.
We want to be proactive partners in this, we’ve wanted to be proactive partners this whole time.
And we have a plan and a solution. There is an army of Americans right now. At work. There are private organizations, private citizens, human rights organization, veterans organizations, faith based organizations. From all walks of life. There are people in the government who are busting their butts right now from all sides of the aisle. This is a whole of America effort. It’s probably the thing I’m most proud of is to see how much our American citizens are rallying. And how we’re finally trying to get this right.

There’s a will to do this.
The President needs to understand that the American people want to exit honorably,
and that we have thus far screwed it up but we can still fix it. So here’s how we do it.
We have a beachhead in Kabul right now. And I know this is going to sound crazy, but the Taliban are afraid of us. They’re afraid that if we stay, they could lose the country.
They’re not going to fight us for these people and I’m willing to risk that bet.
We have the largest military in the planet. Let’s use it for one good purpose, to get these people out. We have a beachhead in Kabul. We need to keep it open for as long as we can and put as many people on to as many planes as we possibly can.

And then we need to go to places that we don’t have beachheads…”

    • August 17, 2021 at 2:13 pm

      Major Zeller:
“There’s a guy I’m talking to right now in Mazar-i-Sharif…
I talked to him the night the Taliban took over his city…
They have hope in the American people.
I told him “Brother, I don’t know what’s going to happen, I can’t advise you.
I only know that we have one airport in Kabul that doesn’t even seem to be functioning at this point. It is now but wasn’t then. I said ‘I can’t tell what you to do.”
He said “Well I’m going to have to think on it.” (Major Zeller breaks down…)
He said he still loved us,
he was still proud of the service he did with us
      and he wouldn’t change it
and he thanked us for a good life.
That guy is worth fighting for. Those are our people.
We can go in and get them.
      He’s still alive.
They haven’t killed these people yet.
And the places they’re going door to door in cities where we are not, they’re just taking them away.
In Kabul they’re just telling them “Hey, we’re putting you on a list and we’re going to be coming back when the Americans are gone”.
And in some cases yes, it sounds like according to what your correspondent said they’re not actually starting take people away…

…We just got to keep this beachhead open for as long as possible.
And the only person in the world who can order that is the President of the United States.

      And so I’m asking,
“Please sir. We have a solution in place. We can tell you how to do it. Our team wants to be of help. We’re trying our best. We just wanted to solve this this whole time. This is a disaster that still hasn’t fully unfolded yet. We can still save these people.”

My heart goes out to the young State Department spokesman who remains calm under the storm, knowing full well that that is their conduct, now that they have identified a bone to chew on (or so they think): the military airliner and the zillions of Afghans flocked to its body, nose, wings, and wheels, rushing to leave their zealous brethren behind, the Taliban.

Malala: I Fear for My Afghan Sisters

Ms. Yousafzai, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt,
is an activist for girls’ education and the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

“Some members of the Taliban say they will not deny women and girls education or the right to work.
But given the Taliban’s history of violently suppressing women’s rights, Afghan women’s fears are real. Already, we are hearing reports of female students being turned away from their universities, female workers from their offices.”

“Regional powers should be actively assisting in the protection of women and children. Neighboring countries — China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan — must open their doors to fleeing civilians. That will save lives and help stabilize the region. They must also allow refugee children to enroll in local schools and humanitarian organizations to set up temporary learning centers in camps and settlements.”

“We will have time to debate what went wrong in the war in Afghanistan, but in this critical moment we must listen to the voices of Afghan women and girls. They are asking for protection, for education, for the freedom and the future they were promised. We cannot continue to fail them. We have no time to spare.”
