NASA at Your Table: Where Food Meets Methane

“Today, human sources are responsible for 60% of global methane emissions,
coming primarily from the burning of fossil fuels,
decomposition in landfills and the agriculture sector.
Nearly a quarter of methane emissions can be attributed to agriculture, much of which is from raising livestock. Rice cultivation and food waste are also important sources of agricultural methane, as nearly a third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted.

At NASA, scientists study the global methane budget to better understand the primary sources of methane emissions and how they contribute to climate change. In addition to the human sources, methane is also produced in natural settings. The greatest natural source of methane is wetlands, which contribute 30% of global methane emissions. Other natural sources of methane emissions include the oceans, termites, permafrost, vegetation and wildfires.

Atmospheric methane concentrations have more than doubled since the Industrial Revolution
because of intensive use of oil, gas and coal,
rising demand for beef and dairy products and increased production of food and organic waste.
Although the increase in atmospheric methane concentrations slowed appreciably near the end of the 20th Century, concentrations have been increasing substantially since 2006, likely as a result of rising emissions from raising livestock, renewed reliance on natural gas and, in recent years, wetlands and global warming”

Because of two meds I take for arthritis, makes me compromised. My test was Thursday. Booster approved for those people Friday. I am waiting on a call from UT hospital to get the monoclonal antibody infusion. Once over that, will see if Dr says to also get the booster.

“Certainly if the child we’re talking about 12 years of age are older,
that person should be vaccinated just as every adult should be vaccinated.
For children under 12 it’s a little bit more difficult because there’s only one group in the United States today that has a zero percent rate of vaccination, and that’s children under the age of 12.
    They’re not eligible for vaccines.”

Dr. Dobbs Explains Why The Delta Variant Is Exploding In Mississippi, What To Do

“On the Monday that Mississippi saw a report of almost 5,000 new COVID-19 cases,
most of them due to the delta variant, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs joined Mississippi Free Press Publisher Kimberly Griffin and Editor Donna Ladd on a special edition of MFP Live.

    During the afternoon of Aug. 2, 2021, Dr. Dobbs gave unblinking safety advice;
talked about his fears about flying now (it’s not about the plane itself); why masks are essential in schools, and what activities shouldn’t happen there; praised Black leaders for vaccine efforts while the virus shifted into “predominantly a white disease in Mississippi”…

      Don’t use the term “Squad”.
Squad is a derivative of the word squaw, an ethnic and sexual slur on Native American Women.

      • 98 Dudette
        August 16, 2021 at 2:57 pm

Um, no. Squad is derivative of the word squadron as an a small tactic group.

      • 99 Dudette
        August 16, 2021 at 3:08 pm

        Also this.
It’s a military term. I’ve never heard of anyone using that as a slur toward Native American women. You might be thinking of a different word that has no “d” some used in old John Wayne movies – a word which I will not post – but that is most certainly not this one.

        • August 16, 2021 at 3:46 pm

“The English word squaw is an ethnic and sexual slur historically used for Indigenous North American women.Contemporary use of the term, especially by non-Natives, is considered offensive, derogatory, misogynist and racist.” The word is not used among Native American, First Nations, Inuit, or Métis peoples.”

You are right that the military word ‘squadron’ is of Italian origin and is distantly related to Latin quadrare (“to make square”).

But you don’t see the connection between dominant white male culture and the way Trump and friends like to employ the word ‘squad’ to describe 4 women of color in Congress.

          • 101 Dudette
            August 16, 2021 at 5:29 pm

I’m familiar with the slur that you mentioned. I didn’t use it, neither did the author of the tweet. In common usage, “squad” refers to a small close-knit group of people – as in my buddies, my friends, my crew. I’m sure you know that. That’s how it was applied to AOC and her colleagues in Congress who work together as a progressive bloc, which btw is not exclusively female or persons of color. As a Black woman, I am particularly sensitive to ethnic slurs. I have heard most of them – quite a few of them aimed at me. However, in my almost 61 years of years of life, never have I heard, in any context, “squad” used as a slur. I don’t get how one leaps to that either by context or by definition. But if you are offended by that particular word, my apologies.

          • August 16, 2021 at 7:23 pm

Will let this go now Dudette –.
Know that my response “Don’t use the term Squad” was not directed at you, Dudette.
But at us and the person who wrote the tweet.

When the trump media in 2020 used the word ‘Squad’ repeatedly, it was specifically aimed at AOC
and her 3 women colleagues. The fact is AOC has been pushing hard for Immigration reform and went after the barbaric treatment under Trump of children on the border.

Despite the disinformation campaigns over the last few years, thanks to AOC and the Progressive Caucus we’re seeing progressive bills go forward.

A supporter of the far-right Proud Boys group from New York pleaded guilty in federal court Monday to making threats against Sen-elect. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga.

The man, Eduard Florea, 40, of Queens, admitted posting statements online threatening to kill Warnock, who had just won a runoff election for the Senate in Georgia. “Dead man can’t pass s— laws. … I will fight so help me god,” he said in one message, according to prosecutors.

When the FBI searched Florea’s house in January, agents found more than a thousand rifle and shotgun rounds. He also pleaded guilty to illegally possessing the ammunition because he had previously been convicted of a felony.
