    A Family Affair…

Five members of a Texas family were arrested on Tuesday for entering the US Capitol together during the January 6 insurrection.
Federal investigators pointed to extensive social media posts from many members of the family in order to make the arrests on Tuesday, in one of the largest single-day sweeps of defendants in one Capitol riot case to date.
The Justice Department said that Thomas “Tom” Munn had encouraged people on social media to travel to DC in the weeks before the riot. In a December Facebook post, Tom Munn wrote, “Our President has only asked two things from us, so far… #1 Vote #2 January 6, 2021.” In another post cited in court documents, Tom Munn wrote “The time has come!”

    President Joe Biden
Goes ‘Full Blast’ On Republican Attacks On Democracy

“Rachel Maddow notes that Arizona Republicans are set to move into the next phase of delegitimizing elections with the announcement of purported results from their sham “audit,” and shares powerful remarks from President Joe Biden denouncing the Republican attacks on elections as “unpatriotic.”

  49. July 14, 2021 at 9:00 am

    Remarks by President Biden
on Protecting the Sacred, Constitutional Right to Vote.
    (excerpt)

“They voted early. They voted absentee. They voted in person. They voted by mail.
They voted by drop box. And then they got their families and friends to go out and vote.

Election officials, the entire electoral system, withstood unrelenting political attacks, physical threats, intimidation, and pressure. They did so with unyielding courage and faith in our democracy.

With recount after recount after recount, court case after court case, the 2020 election was the most scrutinized election ever in American history. Challenge after challenge brought to local, state, and election officials; state legislatures; state and federal courts — even to the United States Supreme Court not once, but twice.

More than 80 judges, including those appointed by my predecessor, heard the arguments. In every case, neither cause nor evidence was found to undermine the national achievement of administering this historic election in the face of such extraordinary challenges.

Audits, recounts were conducted in Arizona, in Wisconsin. In Georgia, it was recounted three times.

It’s clear. For those who challenge the results and question the integrity of the election: No other election has ever been held under such scrutiny and such high standards.

The Big Lie is just that: a big lie.

The 2020 election — it’s not hyperbole to suggest — the most examined and the fullest expression of the will of the people in the history of this nation. This should be celebrated — the example of America at its best. But instead, we continue to see an example of human nature at its worst — something darker and more sinister.

In America, if you lose, you accept the results. You follow the Constitution. You try again. You don’t call facts “fake” and then try to bring down the American experiment just because you’re unhappy. That’s not statesmanship. (Applause.)

That’s not statesmanship; that’s selfishness. That’s not democracy; it’s the denial of the right to vote. It suppresses. It subjugates.

The denial of full and free and fair elections is the most un-American thing that any of us can imagine,
the most undemocratic, the most unpatriotic, and yet, sadly, not unprecedented.

From denying enslaved people fu- — full citizenship until the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments after the Civil War; to denying women the right to vote until the 19th Amendment 100 years ago; to poll taxes and literacy tests, and the Ku Klux Klan campaigns of violence and terror that lasted into the ‘50s and ‘60s; to the Supreme Court decision in 2013 and then again just two weeks ago –- a decision that weakened the landmark Voting Rights Act; to the willful attacks — election attacks in 2020; and then to a whole other level of threat — the violence
and the deadly insurrection on the Capitol on January 6th.”

    President BIden:
“There is an unfolding assault taking place in America today — an attempt to suppress and subvert the right to vote in fair and free elections, an assault on democracy, an assault on liberty, an assault on who we are — who we are as Americans. For, make no mistake, bullies and merchants of fear and peddlers of lies are threatening the very foundation of our country.”

    President BIden:
“God bless you all and may God protect our troops, and all those who stand to watch over our democracy.
But act. We`ve got to act. Thank you.”

Doom won every county in Oklahoma, so why is the state election board secretary calling for a forensic and independent audit to the 2020 election? (Same in 2 doom PA counties as well as Antrim County MI where lawyers face potential disbarment for spewing election garbage)…

    (Rachel Maddow:
“The point of what they are doing with stunts like this, the latest one now in Oklahoma, is not to find anything wrong with any particular election or even to cast doubt specifically on places that Biden won.
They just want to make it seem like there is no trustworthy results of any election anywhere.

Like elections are all crime scenes full of fraud.
And if you just let Republicans have access to the ballots and the machinery, they can prove it.

The overall aim is to effectively illegitimize election results anywhere they can, even in places Trump won,
it doesn’t matter. As a way to cast doubt on all elections. They are trying to rewire Americans’ brains and expectations so we no longer think of elections as things that have an objective knowable result that we can agree on whether or not we like that outcome.”

“The idea is that they want us to not believe that any election result can be known, that it’s all subject to post-facto political manipulation and they would like to be the ones doing the manipulating.”

“The filibuster isn’s something that’s existed since the Constitution.
It’s a relatively recent invention and it has changed a lot, including in recent years as there have been carve-outs for all sorts of things. Including judicial nominees, Supreme Court justices, cabinet nominees.
There’s all sorts of things that the filibuster used to apply to things that it doesn’t anymore.
Why not voting rights? It’s within Democrats’ power to make that change.” (Rachel Maddow)

    • July 14, 2021 at 10:58 am

      Congressman Clyburn:
Hopeful Joe Manchin Will See Wisdom Of Scrapping Filibuster For Voting Rights

“Rep. James Clyburn talks with Rachel Maddow about the idea of making an exception to the Senate filibuster for constitutional issues like voting rights and the prospect of Senator Joe Manchin agreeing that his support for the filibuster can sustain this new specification.”

    • July 14, 2021 at 11:00 am

Congressman Jim Clyburn this weekend publicly called on President Biden to endorse
a carve out for the filibuster for Voting Rights legislation:
“I’m pleased to hear the Vice President to whom the President has given this responsibility is in fact having those discussions with members of the Senate. Because we all know that the filibuster is not in the Constitution. It’s not a law.”

—Must pass HR-1 and HR-4 the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act w/50 votes.

A new Texas abortion law effectively deputizes citizens as bounty hunters for its enforcement, as anyone under this statute can now sue parties who assist women seeking abortions, earning $10,000 if the lawsuit is successful. Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood, joins Joy Reid on the lawsuit filed to block this law by her organization among others.

Archaeology Department closure confirmed at University of Sheffield, UK.
“A world-renowned archaeology department is to close despite a campaign to keep it open, it has been confirmed.”
“When the review was announced, the Council for British Archaeology said any kind of closure would be “devastating…The university has a very high profile in the archaeological and academic world and has made huge contributions to the country’s higher education profile.”
    (bbc.com)

    • July 14, 2021 at 2:25 pm

There is a a steady organized right wing movement to cut down University education, cut funding and departments. The Archaeology Department in Sheffield UK at its height had 29 faculty. It was slowly reduced by attrition to 11 faculty. Now it has been closed entirely.

This is a warning/example for the U.S. particularly to social science and humanities departments constantly targeted for cut backs by the right wing. Some areas like Archaeology are classified as social science when they’re as much hard science as any other lab-based disciplines. And currently very popular with students. Covid has been tough on enrollment in a lot of places…but now there’s a 6%+ projected growth of U.S. economy. Don’t let them cut precious faculty and resources. We need Universities as well as job focused community Colleges. We need both.
