—Political operative Rufo created a political cudgel—

Thx to Joy Reid for concluding her interview with Christoper Rufo, imo great pretender, creator of manifesto full of lies about an established theoretical model called critical race theory with:
“And I’m going to give you credit for one thing.
You did create your own thing…labeled it something that already existed as a name, slapped that brand name on it, and turned it into a successful political strategy. You’ve done that. It’s creating a lot of hell at school board meetings.”

    • June 24, 2021 at 1:54 pm

      Joy Reid to Jelani Cobb:
“Christopher was very upset that I didn’t let him read his talking points.
These are his talking points, we printed them out…
The reason that I did not let him continue is, in this manifesto, in this talking points memo, he wanted to start to read some of the stories that he has put in here to claim that they’re critical race theory. He wants to read them on tv with people. So that he can then advance his own version…he made up a version…and he called it ‘critical race theory’.”

      Jelani Cobb, New Yorker.
“So many lies I don’t know where to start. I mean just lying.
And it’s a very difficult thing to hear. Because as scholars we actually care about definitions.
We care about meaning. We care about nuance. We care about scholarship and historiography.
And for a person who just wants to throw grenades and play with shrapnel, he’s been able to take an idea devoted to the pursuit of equality, devoted to understanding why equality has been so evasive in the span of our history, and then turn it into a weapon to further the inequality that was the problem in the first place. So there’s so many things to start with.
Let’s start with the idea of whiteness.
So we are looking at a project which is trying to understand the power afforded to a political category.
And that is the political category of whiteness. We’re not talking about individual white people. We’re not talking about the person at your job, or your next door neighbor, or your friend who you went to school with. But that’s what you would believe, the idea that ‘We’re trying to have a crusade which is going to marginalize Americans, white Americans and turn the rest of the country into Wakanda’.
And they’re playing on these fears in that way.
That is not what critical race theory was concerned with.
If we look at the 1790 immigration act at the beginning of the country, which relegated immigration, restricted immigration to people that they categorized as white. Making the contention that only white people, this fictional category, could hold the rights of citizens.
And so this is the ancestral legacy of the country that we’re grappling with.”

    • June 24, 2021 at 1:58 pm

“And so there’s a few things that I want to say about it in terms of reading.
Go back and read Linnaeus and the founder of taxonomy, and his role in creating the categories of race. And Blumenbach. Read Thomas Jefferson’s notes on Virginia, where he as an intellectual is looking at the cutting edge currents of racial theory in Europe, and the creation of these subordination ideas of Africans, and applying them to the context of this newly created country.
Read Nell Irvin Painter’s book “The History of White People.”
Read Ibram Kendi’s book “Stamped from the Beginning”.
Read Gossett’s “Race: The History of an Idea in America.”
We could talk about this for another 15 minutes with me just listing historiography. There’s an entire body of knowledge that will explain what this is.
And Mr. Rufo is just lying.
It upsets me as a historian to see someone just lie about work we care so diligently for.”

“And the thing about it is that, you know, he even admits that he doesn’t give an S about these things, right? He’s not going to go read these books. He doesn’t care about it. He literally said and he tweeted and admitted at the Claremont Institute while sitting next to Michael Anton, by the way, “The Flight 93 Election” guy who said that the immigrants coming into this country who were nonwhite have no sense or feel for democracy. Basically they shouldn’t be here and then ended up in the Trump administration.
He admitted that he’s just taking the things that irritate white conservatives
and just conservatives in general. They don’t like woke-ness. They don’t like trainings on white Americans being sensitive to non-white Americans. They don’t like woke capital. They don’t like those things.
And so they’re going to call them all ‘critical race theory’ and use them, as he said,
as a political cudgel to get Republicans elected.”

99.2 Percent of All U.S. Covid Deaths Are Unvaccinated, New Analysis Shows
If you’re pushing anti-vax bullshit, you’re getting people killed
This week CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said adult deaths from Covid-19 are “at this point entirely preventable” due to the effectiveness of vaccines. And a new analysis from the AP confirms what Walensky said.

According to the analysis of government data from May, released on Thursday, out of the 18,000 Covid-19 deaths during the month, approximately 150 were fully vaccinated people. That comes out to 0.8 percent, or an average of five deaths per day out of more than 200 average daily deaths. At the height of the pandemic in January of this year, average daily deaths were above 3,400 per day. Additionally, fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 hospitalized with the virus (0.1 percent).

Coronavirus: Israel reimposes masks amid new virus fears.

Israel has reintroduced a requirement to wear masks indoors amid a rise in coronavirus cases, just days after it lifted the measure.

Concern has grown after the country recorded more than 100 new daily cases in successive days after registering zero earlier this month.

Most of the cases have been linked to the Delta variant from abroad.

Israel has been one of the most successful countries in the world in tackling the pandemic.

It implemented the fastest vaccination programme, under which well over half the population of 9.3m has been partially or fully immunised.

Feds sue Georgia over new voting law
Attorney General Merrick Garland Friday announced the department will file a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn portions of Senate Bill 202, which imposes new voter identification requirements, limits the use of ballot drop boxes and includes other requirements that critics say will disproportionately affect minority voters.
The federal action is the eighth lawsuit seeking to overturn provisions of the new law. Various voting rights groups filed the other lawsuits. But the latest would devote the resources of the federal government to overturning SB 202.

“After George Floyd’s murder, police departments across the country faced criticisms of systemic bias and a failure to reflect the communities they patrol and so they worked to enact reforms. But diversifying efforts have been underway for years inside the Miami Police Department. Roughly a quarter of all officers in Miami PD are Black, which is a much greater percentage than the city’s overall Black population. Over the past year, Black officers have been pushing for even more reform within the department, from the top down.”

“From 1810 to 1917 the U.S. federal government subsidized mission and boarding schools:

“By 1885, 106 [Indian Schools] had been established, many of them on abandoned military installations”.
Using military personnel and Indian prisoners, boarding schools were seen as a means for the government to achieve assimilation of Native Americans into mainstream American culture. Assimilation efforts included forcibly removing Native Americans from their families, converting them to Christianity, preventing them from learning or practicing indigenous culture and customs, and living in a strict military fashion.
When students arrived at boarding schools, the routine was typically the same.
First, the students were forced to give up their tribal clothing and their hair was cut. Second, “[t]o instill the necessary discipline, the entire school routine was organized in martial fashion, and every facet of student life followed a strict timetable”.

    Continue to operate…
Some off reservation schools, such as St. Joseph’s Indian School in South Dakota, continue to operate.

    “In a 2015 interview
    for the National Catholic Reporter,
Zigmund Hollow Horn (Cheyenne River Lakota) told Vinnie Rotandaro of being abused during his eight years spent at the St. Joseph’s, along with other Native children.[34] He said his father had sent him there after his mother died in childbirth. Hollow Horn reports that the children, in addition to chores and schoolwork, “went to church three times a day, constantly, day in, day out”. Rotondaro summarized, “Standing in the pews, away from their family, their culture banished and condemned, some children would faint”.

    Hollow Horn continued:
“And when they faint, there’s no mercy.
They just drag you out, take you to the back of the pews somewhere, and they slap you up, wake you up, give you water or whatever. … Then they take you back again, put you in your pew. Classmates were regularly hit or whipped with a belt. The older classmates would hold you down. They had to hold you down. That’s an order. They got us when we were young. I used to speak my native tongue when I went down there, and I can’t even talk now. They beat it out of me. If you spoke your language, they held you down, put a bar of soap in your mouth.”
