Happy Father’s Day to caring fathers wherever they are.
And happy Father’s Day to AG Garland. We need strong protections and enforcement of the law, imo we’re
    fading without it.

We need Fraudit to be shut down before it becomes an out-of-control wildfire.

We knew all who gathered had their shots.

That story about the Cheneys reminded me of a comment an evangelical right wing friend posted last night on a post I did about Selma. Her comment was about how she and I were protected growing up in a very small rural community in northeast TN. She said it was a sad time but these men and women were very courageous. ……..There’s been a lot of positive changes………Hopefully time will prove that changes continued throughout time. Equality is for all human beings no matter what race…….and this is the ‘topper’—She hopes that our legacy proves we have changed. But……..how does she vote?! STRAIGHT GOP! She would NEVER vote for a Democrat. What hypocrites they are, whether it is the Cheney family or my childhood friend. None of them ever put two and two together and see their own hypocrisy. They can talk a good game, but their words means nothing.

Does it not rain or snow wherever this is? So much for bringing anything with you. Do you put a pulley system beside it for your groceries? You could put a lift in the space this thing takes up, so this is pretty much a fuck you to the disabled. Vigorous and sweaty hard pass.

    Beto O’Rourke to Joy Reid:
The first For the People Act vote today in the Senate, is a chance for voters to push their senators on voting rights.

    BETO:
“You’re absolutely right. They are trying to distract us while they steal elections and the very democracy that we should be fighting so hard to protect and expand.

Texas is already the toughest state in the country in which to vote.
Hundreds of polling place closures, racial gerrymandering, the worst voter I.D. law on the books. And on top of that they want to make it harder for those big cities to vote, harder for Black voters to cast a ballot, harder for the disabled.

And there’s a provision Joy, in the S.B.7 Elections Bill that the governor supports,
that would allow Texas to overturn elections based on the allegation of fraud. And you saw how hard the former president Rudy Giuliani, tried to overturn elections in Pennsylvania, and Georgia, and Michigan. And they’re still maybe recounting the votes in Arizona.

Texas could very well have a law, a statute, that would allow this state to overturn them in a future election.
So we have got to stay focused on this. And we have got to fight back. And that fight now has to be in the United States Senate, where we need the For the People Act to become law. Because it protects us against these forms of voter suppression.

And it expands access to the ballot box for eligible voters by the tens of millions, through automatic voter registration, same-day voter registration, making Election Day a national holiday. All of these very popular across this country among Democrats and Republicans as well.

This is the thing to do if you want to save democracy in Texas.”

  40. June 22, 2021 at 9:51 am

Kimberle Crenshaw, co-founder and executive director of the African American Policy Forum,
coined the term critical race theory.

(Joy Reid: “Ah, so it’s your fault Madam.”)

    Kimberle Crenshaw:
“Well you know what? Here’s the thing, Joy. Critical race theory is not so much a thing.
It’s a way of looking at a thing. It’s a way of looking at race. It’s a way of looking at why after so many decades, centuries actually since the emancipation, we have patterns of inequality that are enduring. They’re stubborn.

And the point of critical race theory originally, was to think and talk about how law contributed to the subordinate status of African-Americans, of indigenous people, and of an entire group of people who were coming to our shores from Asia.

And the point was quite frankly, to understand the problem in order to intervene in it. To understand why the greatest hopes for our Republic were not being realized, even though these hopes were encoded in law.

So critical race theory just inherits the beliefs and the hopes of Frederick Douglass, of Martin Luther King, Who basically want the law to do for the freed people what the law did for enslavers. And we picked that up in the `70s and ‘80s after the civil rights movement to say, OK so now we’ve had this big civil rights movement, we have all these laws on the books. But things really aren’t looking as different as they should, if we are really the society that we say we are. So we put about the task of understanding how law wasn’t just the neutral referee. Law wasn’t always on our side. In fact, law was less on our side than for on our side.

And we wanted to tell these stories in order to do better with the promises that are embedded in the Constitution. That’s what’s in critical race theory.”

Major Ocean-Observing Satellite Starts Providing Science Data

“Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, the latest spacecraft to monitor sea surface height, releases its first science measurements to users.

After six months of check-out and calibration in orbit, the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite will make its first two data streams available to the public on June 22. It launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Nov. 21, 2020, and is a U.S.-European collaboration to measure sea surface height and other key ocean features, such as ocean surface wind speed and wave height.

One of the sea surface height data streams that will be released is accurate to 2.3 inches (5.8 centimeters)
and will be available within hours of when the instruments aboard Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich collect it.
A second stream of data, accurate to 1.4 inches (3.5 centimeters), will be released two days after collection.
The difference in when the products become available balances accuracy with delivery timeliness for tasks like forecasting the weather and helping to monitor the formation of hurricanes. More datasets, which will be accurate to about 1.2 inches (2.9 centimeters), are slated for distribution later this year and are intended for research activities and climate science including tracking global mean sea level rise.”

    • June 22, 2021 at 10:26 am

The ocean absorbs more than 90% of the heat trapped in the Earth system
by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases, which causes seawater to expand and sea level to rise. Monitoring ocean height is important because it helps forecasters predict things, including ocean currents and potential hurricane strength…

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Maryland. “In a changing climate, it’s a great achievement that these data are ready for release….

“The altimetry data are now being processed at EUMESAT headquarters in Darmstadt, from where the satellite is also being controlled, and released to ocean and weather forecasting data users around the world for their operational usage,” Saldana said.

Scientists also anticipate using the data to gauge how fast sea levels are rising because of climate change.
The expansion of warm seawater accounts for about one-third of modern-day sea level rise,
while meltwater from glaciers and ice sheets accounts for the rest.
The rate at which the oceans are rising has accelerated over the past two decades,
and researchers expect it to speed up more in the years to come.
Sea level rise will change coastlines and increase flooding from tides and storms.
To better understand how rising seas will impact humanity, researchers need long climate records – something Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich will help provide.”

  49. June 22, 2021 at 10:43 am

    Ari Berman to Chris Hayes:
“The entire point of voter suppression is to make it harder for your opponents to be able to vote.
And so there’s just 2 standards here:

There’s the game being played by Republicans in the states,
they do whatever they can to undermine democracy.

Then there’s a game being played by Democrats in Washington,
where they fail to protect American democracy because of these arcane rules that nobody actually cares about.

And in a hundred years, nobody is going to care about the filibuster if the right to vote is undermined for decades.”

    • 76 marleysperson
      June 22, 2021 at 10:50 am

Exactly right. We all need to be outraged and bring that outrage to your reps.

    • June 22, 2021 at 1:49 pm

the democrats are not playing a game…but when you do not have 51 votes to overturn the filibuster…what do you do…

that was harsh of Ari Berman to paint all Dems with the same brush….this is a nuanced struggle

and for the record…the voting rights of blk folks have always been in peril…even with the constitutional amendments of Reconstruction and the 1965 VRA….WE..STILL..HAD..TO FIGHT…..

the laws passed in GA are like the laws that were passed to bring an end to Reconstruction…
