“People are angry here in West Virginia.
They’re non-violent but they’re angry…they said ‘This man Joe Manchin is lying’ on them.
79% of people in this state want to see the For the People Act, and they want to see the Voting Rights Act restored.
But in addition to that we had coal miners here today.
We had poor people from the…Black folk from the ‘hood. We had veterans here today, we had ministers.
And they say not only about voting rights, they understand the connection between voting rights and living wages. They say Manchin is wrong on living wages.
That’s 350,000 people here who make less than $15 an hour. He’s wrong when it comes to poor people.
They say he’s wrong when it comes to infrastructure.
Because 46.7% of West Virginians who stay in…can’t even afford water.”
Bishop Barber:
“These are mountaineers. And mountaineers say ‘we are always free’…
They’re coming to D.C. on the 23rd. They are angry. They are bothered.
And they are saying this is not what their senator should be doing. And he should stop lying on them and saying he’s doing it for West Virginians.”
Reid:
“West Virginia is a very poor state overall. But it’s also not a very Black state.
I see behind you, you have a very multiracial coalition. So we’re talking about people who work in the mining industry, people who are working low wage jobs.
Who are white.
So you know the perception has been that these people are right-wing, that they’re conservative, that Joe Manchin is doing what he’s doing because they are conservative, these voters. You’re saying that’s not what you’re finding.”
Bishop Barber:
“That’s a bunch of foolishness.
And the fact of the matter, we make a mistake when we make voting rights and restoring the Voting Rights Act, and the People’s Act, and the filibuster all about race.
It is about race but it’s also about class.
Dr. King said you have to understand the aristocracy in this country. They fear poor and low wealth Black people and White people and Brown people forming a fusion coalition to change a nation. That’s how it always happens.
And so by him (Manchin) doing what he’s doing, he’s forcing us to show that this is about a battle for democracy. It’s racist, but it’s also class based.
We’ve got to challenge it.
And I’m telling you the people here in this state:
The coal miners are just as hot as the people in the ‘hood.
The nurses are just as hot as the teachers.
And what they’re saying is look, ‘He’s serving the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and not the U.S. Constitution’.
And by filibustering – he’s BLOCKING the things that this state needs.
He’s standing against his OWN state.
They didn’t send him to the Senate for that. And they are coming to DC, Joy!
Let me tell you.
When you look at this state, you’re right. It’s one of the poorest states in the nation.
But also West Virginia has a history. They split from Virginia because they didn’t want to be like the rest of the South. And what they are saying is ‘Do right by us in this state’.

“Because when you suppress the vote, guess what, you hurt poor folk in the mountains.
You hurt Black folk in the city.

“Oh absolutely it’s all connected. I think what we’re seeing in Arizona is just the beginning.
And until, again, there’s real accountability at the ballot box for republican leaders who have continued to spread these lies, we’re going to see this these efforts to continue to undermine people’s faith in the process. To try to spread audits, fake audits like this to other states. And to also change the rules of the game to make it harder for people to vote, and strip election officials of their authority and ability to protect the integrity of elections.
And the other thing that’s really pernicious about all of this,
is they’re claiming that it’s in furtherance of protecting the security of the elections, protecting the integrity of the vote. And people need to know that that’s really not what is happening behind the scenes. These individuals who are pushing for more fake audits around the country are really just trying to undermine democracy and threaten the security of our elections.
And it’s going to take ALL of us standing up, speaking the truth, and pushing back and holding everyone accountable who’s spreading these lies if our democracy is going to make it through this moment.”

”And we have to, because presidents set the tone for the country,
and the tone Donald Trump sent was one of being a bully and a phony tough guy.
But that has presented and manifested itself in the way that everyday Americans are acting, right?
You’re seeing the treatment of public health officials,
the disdainful way that NBA players are having bottles thrown at them.
The breakdown in decency on the House floor.
And my fear is that if the president is spying on his political opponents or weaponizing the Department of Justice, that it’s not just in Washington that that could happen. That across America people may think well, that’s cool now. You have a permission slip to do this because Donald Trump did it.
And so that’s why not only is an Inspector General investigation needed,
but in Congress to interview and to find out what happened through places that the Inspector General can’t go.
We should also simultaneously have our own investigation.”
Congressman Swalwell:
”Well over the last 4 years we saw that the actual cancer was the president.
Whether it was the rule of law, our system of justice, or even our democracy, Donald Trump was willing to destroy any of them if they got in his way.
And so this is not a 500-year flood situation.
Nothing Donald Trump hates more than being a loser.
And in the last year he was the biggest loser of all.
Not just because he lost in a landslide Ali, but also because he tried to test our democracy.
And he failed. He barely failed.
And so if he comes back as president, or if one of his wannabe cronies gets into office,
we have to make sure that we have rules and regulations that never let anyone get this close.

Bishop William Barber, co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign and National Call for Moral Revival, yesterday leading a Moral Monday March to demand that Senator Manchin do the right thing. Speaking to Joy Reid.
Bishop Barber:
“People are angry here in West Virginia.
They’re non-violent but they’re angry…they said ‘This man Joe Manchin is lying’ on them.
79% of people in this state want to see the For the People Act, and they want to see the Voting Rights Act restored.
But in addition to that we had coal miners here today.
We had poor people from the…Black folk from the ‘hood. We had veterans here today, we had ministers.
And they say not only about voting rights, they understand the connection between voting rights and living wages. They say Manchin is wrong on living wages.
That’s 350,000 people here who make less than $15 an hour. He’s wrong when it comes to poor people.
They say he’s wrong when it comes to infrastructure.
Because 46.7% of West Virginians who stay in…can’t even afford water.”
Bishop Barber:
“These are mountaineers. And mountaineers say ‘we are always free’…
They’re coming to D.C. on the 23rd. They are angry. They are bothered.
And they are saying this is not what their senator should be doing. And he should stop lying on them and saying he’s doing it for West Virginians.”
Reid:
“West Virginia is a very poor state overall. But it’s also not a very Black state.
I see behind you, you have a very multiracial coalition. So we’re talking about people who work in the mining industry, people who are working low wage jobs.
Who are white.
So you know the perception has been that these people are right-wing, that they’re conservative, that Joe Manchin is doing what he’s doing because they are conservative, these voters. You’re saying that’s not what you’re finding.”
Bishop Barber:
“That’s a bunch of foolishness.
And the fact of the matter, we make a mistake when we make voting rights and restoring the Voting Rights Act, and the People’s Act, and the filibuster all about race.
It is about race but it’s also about class.
Dr. King said you have to understand the aristocracy in this country. They fear poor and low wealth Black people and White people and Brown people forming a fusion coalition to change a nation. That’s how it always happens.
And so by him (Manchin) doing what he’s doing, he’s forcing us to show that this is about a battle for democracy. It’s racist, but it’s also class based.
We’ve got to challenge it.
And I’m telling you the people here in this state:
The coal miners are just as hot as the people in the ‘hood.
The nurses are just as hot as the teachers.
And what they’re saying is look, ‘He’s serving the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and not the U.S. Constitution’.
And by filibustering – he’s BLOCKING the things that this state needs.
He’s standing against his OWN state.
They didn’t send him to the Senate for that. And they are coming to DC, Joy!
Let me tell you.
When you look at this state, you’re right. It’s one of the poorest states in the nation.
But also West Virginia has a history. They split from Virginia because they didn’t want to be like the rest of the South. And what they are saying is ‘Do right by us in this state’.
Bishop Barber:
“Because when you suppress the vote, guess what, you hurt poor folk in the mountains.
You hurt Black folk in the city.
You hurt everybody.
This is not about Democrat versus Republican, and left versus right, and conservative versus liberal.
This is about right versus wrong. This is a moral issue, a constitutional issue. And we’re going to stand and fight against it.’
