“MT Supreme Court upholds controversial judicial-appointment law
Gianforte can appoint new judges directly”

“The new law abolishes the 48-year-old state Judicial Nomination Commission, which had vetted judicial candidates and forwarded a list of finalists to the governor, who had to choose from the list.

Now, the governor can essentially appoint whoever he or she wants, to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court or state district courts.”

      A direct gubernatorial appointment:
Justice Laurie McKinnon (only dissenter): “Unfortunately, 50 years after the 1972 Constitutional Convention, this court reaches a conclusion contrary to the framers’ intent and which enables what the framers clearly sought to prevent – a direct gubernatorial appointment,”

    Word is…

Attorney General Merrick Garland has scheduled a speech today.

  27. June 11, 2021 at 11:16 am

    Remarks by President Biden
on the COVID-19 Vaccination Program and the Effort to Defeat COVID-19 Globally

“Over the past four months, we have taken a number of steps toward this historic effort. We have contributed more than any nation to COVAX — a collective global effort that is delivering COVID-19 vaccines across the world.

We have supported manufacturing efforts abroad through our partnerships with Japan, India, and Australia — known as the “Quad.” We’ve shared doses with our neighbors Canada and Mexico.

And in addition, three weeks ago, with America’s vaccines — America’s vaccine supply secured and with confidence we have enough vaccines to cover every American who wants one, we announced that we would donate 80 million doses of our own vaccine — in house now — to supply the world by the end of June. Many of these doses are shipping to countries around the world as we speak.

And today, we’re taking a major step that will supercharge the global fight against this pandemic. At my direction, the United States will purchase an additional half billion doses from Pfizer — the Pfizer vaccine — that we’ll donate nearly 100 low- and lower-middle-income countries. They will be the beneficiaries.

Let me say that again: The United States will purchase a half a billion doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to donate to nearly 100 nations that are in dire need in the fight against this pandemic. That’s a historic step. The largest single purchase and donation of COVID-19 vaccines by any single country ever.

Importantly, this is an mRNA vaccine, which is proven to be extremely effective against COVID-19 and every known variant of that virus thus far.

These half a billion vaccines will start to be shipped in August as quickly as they roll off the manufacturing line. Two hundred million of these doses will be delivered this year, in 2021, and 300 million more will be delivered in the first half of 2022.

Let me be clear: Just as with the 80 million doses we previously announced, the United States is providing these half…[billion] doses with no strings attached.”

A treasure map for an American tyrant

“Donald Trump exposed the weaknesses in our system of government
that could now be exploited by a corrupt leader with control of the White House. In this series, the Globe editorial board outlines the urgent reforms needed to prevent the rise of an American tyrant — and to protect our democracy for posterity.”

“…While there are supposed to be laws and limits on the presidency, Trump was unrestrained, exposing just how toothless those safeguards have become and just how urgently the nation needs to reform the office of the presidency itself.

Presidents in a democratic system of government are not meant to be able to extract personal profits from government service — or hand out pardons to imprisoned buddies, pervert justice, or foment an insurrection. That’s the promise of democracy: that it will be superior to these authoritarian tendencies of tyrants and kings. When these laws and norms are violated, they should be backed up by severe consequences if that democracy is to maintain its integrity. But right now, as it stands after Trump’s four years in office, American presidents can, in fact, commit all those abuses — and suffer little more than losing their Twitter account.

Trump may not have destroyed the American presidency, but he did put the institution on a perilous path.”

“The nation can, and must, prevent the rise of an American tyrant.”

—multi-part series by the Boston Globe, wow, thank you.

“Our norms only go so far in protecting the democracy. Our laws only go so far.”
    Adam Schiff

  35. June 11, 2021 at 12:26 pm

    imho thoughts, questions:

    1) Who in the Capitol was behind the Insurrection in any way?
    2) Was the Jan 6 response delay partly about waiting for a chance for trump to impose the Insurrection Act?
    3) Why haven’t Proud Boys been designated a Domestic Terrorist group? (Canada has done so.)

    Clint Watts to Joy Reid:
“There is no domestic terrorism statute by which there’s a designation process allowing the FBI or any investigators for that matter in the domestic space to develop intelligence. Even anticipating that a group might mobilize to something, you have to have a probable cause to start investigations on each individual case.”

    Rachel Maddow:
“But the home front is wobbly, in terms of whether we are successfully fighting off our own rapidly consolidating authoritarian movement inside our own politics. And whether we are establishing the necessary deterrence for would-be authoritarian leaders here, who have proven pretty good at grabbing the reins in our own country.”

President Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson have signed a new Atlantic Charter:
“…renewing an updating a commitment our countries made to each other as free nations in 1941 as Hitler rose. And FDR and Churchill wanted to shore up the alliance of the free world against him, and against fascism, and against authoritarianism. When we learned that Biden and Johnson will be signing this new Atlantic compact today, we called NBC presidential historian Michael Beschloss to get his take on where these two leaders are at right now with this update of that compact, compared with FDR and Churchill fighting fascism 80 years ago.”

    • June 11, 2021 at 1:05 pm

      Michael Beschloss, presidential historian:
“Well you know, a couple of moments in history our democracy has been almost taken away. That happened in the 1860s, there was a Southern insurrection. That happened in 1940, when Americans had to decide whether we’d stand up to Hitler and Mussolini and the Japanese, to make sure that we and freedom survived.
The Cold War, especially a moment like 1960, when John Kennedy became president. He said, ‘We are in an hour of maximum danger that our system may not survive.”
We have lived, you and I and all of us watching, for four years through Donald Trump.
Our democracy was almost taken away.
But here we are – he is gone, the danger remains.
You were talking about the fact that the Russians and Chinese would love nothing better than to chase democracy out of our country. They’re uncomfortable with it.
But the worst thing, just as you were saying Rachel, is that we have at the same time what we didn’t have a 1940 or 1960. And that is a danger to democracy from within.
Another insurrection like January 6th. Maybe another attempt at coup d`état or worse, just as you’ve been saying. We’re seeing these state legislatures stealing voting rights from people in state after state. We are in danger of American elections and the presidency, and other offices, being something like the elections for Mussolini which he won with about 90%”

Collapse of Infrastructure Talks Puts Climate Action at Risk
“The planet cannot survive another successful Republican obstructionist strategy,” said Senator Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat who wrote climate legislation that died in Congress in 2010. “We have to have climate at the center of any infrastructure package in order to have my vote. No climate, no deal.”

    Senator Ed Markey to Hayes:
“Well, it sounds like to me that they have a package which is climate denial masquerading as bipartisanship.
We can’t have an infrastructure bill in 2021 that doesn’t have climate at its center.
And any other bill that we are going to consider that does not have aggressive solutions to the climate crisis
will just have that response which I`ve been giving which is no climate, no deal.
That’s the only way in which we can respond.
This bill has to meet the magnitude of the challenges which the climate crisis is presenting to our country and to the planet.”

“80% of the airline employees have a Union.
And so we were able to get the best Covid relief package of any industry.”

“the American worker…working more to make more, not making more to have a better life.”

“But the fact of the matter is that we have to grow the labor movement.
This is what President Biden is saying, and he’s absolutely right.
If we don’t grow that sustained labor movement where workers can actually bargain for their wages, and their health care, and their secure retirement, and the other benefits, and vacation,
and things that make it a meaningful life,
    then those things can change.
The corporate elite can change them any day!!!
So you could have a whole bunch of worker power that gained something on in one month,
and is taken away in the next month, if you don’t have a union and those rights and that contract… just like those executives demand for themselves.”

Chairman Frazier statement regarding TC Energy’s KXL Pipeline
    by Harold Frazier
Statement from Chairman Harold Frazier of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.
    Eagle Butte, South Dakota —

“I have heard news today that has given me a sense of relief that I have not felt in a long time. It has been reported that TC Energy has cancelled the proposed Keystone XL pipeline which would run right through the middle of Great Sioux Nation treaty territory.

I would like to thank all the people who sacrificed, stood up, took action, worked and prayed for to protect our nation and Unci Maka. Jim Picotte and Leon Red Dog shall always be in my thoughts and prayers for their commitment to protecting our land.

To the countless water protectors who have fought the constant battles in a thousand places to defeat this existential threat to us all, every action you took was an answer to a prayer.

I would like to thank United States President Joseph Biden
for understanding the damage to this planet projects like this would cause and cancelling the permit needed to cross the medicine line with Canada. An acknowledgement of the importance our actions have to this planet was provided when you took the bold step of action making you a champion for all of us.”

I so want Val to eat little Marco and spit him out. He is a slimy prick…but the Cubans in Florida love him.

I was a huge fan of JER’s posts of arrival/departure of AF1! OK, OK, I was addicted! 😂😎 That ended for us all w/ Virus45. Uggh! Effing gargantuan nightmare!

Just saw AF1 on runway, & addiction is back, not going to rehab. This is my sheer joy! I love these overseas trips! 💞💞

😂😂 I was so silly during 8 years of PBO. Kinda bad as Tattoo in Fantasy Island series: “Da plane”. Ah geez! That was funny, as if I had shares in that plane! Guess we all did! 😇💞

Now am beginning to feel that joy again. What’s the name given to Dr. Jill’s plane? First Lady.

Does her plane really have a name, other than AF1 when she flies with The President? I couldn’t find anything about a plane name for her, just mentions of what kind of plane she might use.

I also went down a rabbit hole trying to find Second Gentleman Doug’s secret service name. All I could find was:

          President Joe – Celtic
First Lady Dr. Jill – Capri
          MVP Kamala – Pioneer
Second Gentleman Doug – To be announced but something that starts with a “P”

Looks like no one in the press bothered to follow-up after the inauguration.

Euro 2020: Boos drowned out by applause as England take the knee

Boos from a “large number” of fans were drowned out by “loud and prolonged applause” when England’s players took the knee before their opening Euro 2020 game with Croatia at Wembley Stadium.

The Football Association had asked fans to respect the players’ wishes over the gesture to highlight racial injustice.

Boos on Sunday were met by an ovation from other members of the 22,500 crowd.

Before Euro 2020, England boss Gareth Southgate said his players were “more determined than ever” to take the knee.
