“Remarks by President Biden at a Virtual Meeting with a Bipartisan Group of Governors”

“Now, cases and hospitalizations and deaths are all down. Tens of thousands of moms and dads, brothers and sisters, grandparents, neighbors, friends are still with us who, I believe — whom would have otherwise — we would have lost but for the work of these governors.
And millions of Americans are starting to live life more normally after more than a year of sacrifice. And I know everybody is tired of hearing me say this online here, but it isn’t Democratic progress or Republican progress, it’s American progress.”

It is hard for me to garner sympathy for any heartless Republican. Her voting record with Trump and the fact that she voted to put him in the office in the first place says it all for me.

Liz voted 98% for Trump policies, voted for him TWICE, was cool with ALL GOP lies pre-Trump, ok with Trumps lies through until he started down the road of stealing the election. Sorry Liz, your monster just killed your career…lucky for Democracy.

Elie Mystal, Justice Correspondent, the Nation,
    talks to Chris Hayes:
    Mystal:
“This was wrought by John Roberts.
The problem with everything happening in Congress today, everything happening in the Senate,
the For The People Act, or the John Lewis Act, is that John Roberts is still there!
Nothing has happened to make him go away!
Anthony Kennedy was part of the majority in Shelby County, joining Roberts in eviscerating the Voting Rights Act. Anthony Kennedy is being replaced by alleged attempted rapist Brett Kavanaugh.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg who opposed John Roberts’ decision in Shelby Count,
has been replaced by Amy Coney Barrett. I cannot count to five. I cannot count to 5 votes on the Supreme Court that would uphold anything that gets passed by this Congress to secure the Voting Rights Act.
So I don’t know what we’re doing. If we’re not expanding the court.
If we’re not aggressively reforming the court, we are doing NOTHING to protect voting rights, because John Roberts and now SIX conservatives can destroy whatever Congress passes out of this Congress, just as easily as they destroyed the initial Voting Rights Act.”

    • May 12, 2021 at 12:40 pm

      Hayes:
“We have to do some deep work to keep democracy going right now, in a bunch of different directions.”
      Mystal:
“This is the battle that we’re always fighting right?
Look there are as I count them, 4 amendments to the Constitution trying to get over our original sin of having a democracy where only rich, white people could vote. Right? We have the 15th Amendment, the 19th Amendment, the 24th Amendment which eliminated the poll tax, the 26th Amendment which dropped the voting age to 18. I could throw in the 17th Amendment which made popular elections…
That’s 4 to 5 amendments trying to expand the franchise.
Who’s been against them at every point? Conservatives. Whether those Conservatives called themselves Democrats in the 1860s, whether they call themselves Republicans today, whether they call themselves Democrats from West Virginia today, Conservatives are the ones who are against expanding the franchise. Why? Because when everybody votes, Conservatives can’t win. That’s just – they know it, I know it, everybody knows it. When everybody votes and everybody’s vote is counted, the current Conservative Party as it is currently constituted cannot win.”
So they’re not playing chess, right?
They’re not trying to arrange the white pieces so they can outflank the black pieces.
They are trying to throw the black pieces off the board and say check mate. Like that’s their actual political strategy and it has worked at various times in our country’s history very well.”

“Red-state Republicans to ignore voters, reject Medicaid expansion”

“Most Missouri voters backed Medicaid expansion.”
“Missouri’s Republican-dominated legislature has decided not to care.”

“Medicaid expansion would cost Missouri roughly $130 million,
but the state would also secure a federal match of about $1.4 billion to pay for the program.
Just as importantly, thanks to the Democrats’ COVID relief package, states adopting Medicaid expansion would get additional federal resources for the next two years, more than covering Missouri’s $130 million commitment.”

    “Leaked Video:
Dark Money Group Brags About Writing GOP Voter Suppression Bills Across the Country”

“We did it quickly, and we did it quietly” said the executive director of Heritage Action.

    (Ari Berman, Nick Surgey)

    • May 14, 2021 at 11:33 am

      Ari Berman to Chris Hayes:
“Heritage is literally writing these bills for Republican state legislators in Texas, in Arizona, in Georgia, in Florida. And that’s why we’ve seen so many bills suppressing the right to vote in such a short period of time, that are all basically exactly the same. It’s not a coincidence that’s happening. Heritage is literally co-ordinating this effort and bragging about it at this donor meet.”

(Jessica Anderson on video: “I was able to sit down with Governor Kemp three days before he signed the election package in Georgia and I had one message for him. ‘Do not wait to sign that bill. If you wait even an hour, you will look weak. This bill needs to be signed immediately.'”)

    • May 14, 2021 at 11:35 am

      Berman:
”Yes, she (Anderson) was a Trump administration official.
I think what’s so revealing about that is Heritage from the very beginning, co-ordinated the entire campaign to pass voter suppression in Georgia. They helped write the legislation. They lobbied for the legislation. And then once the legislation passed they said to Brian Kemp ‘You have to sign it immediately’. And that’s what he did. He signed it within an hour.

They gave the same message to Republican governors in Arizona, in Florida, in Texas. They’ve done the same thing. The governor of Arizona rushed to sign a new voter suppression law just an hour after it passed in Arizona this week. Ron DeSantis signed the voter suppression bill in Florida as a ‘fox and friends’ exclusive.

So what you have here is one of the most influential dark money groups in Republican circles writing voter suppression laws in secret to make it harder for Black, Brown, and young people to be able to vote.
I mean this is a really shocking development for democracy.”

    • May 14, 2021 at 11:37 am

Hayes: “Jessica Anderson…who runs that heritage sister network…she talks about killing H.R.1 and S.1
      as top priorities for them.”

      Berman:
“She does. She says ‘if they don’t kill S.1 we lose our republic, period’. That’s the language she used. So they have a two-pronged approach here. They’re spending $24 million to make it harder to vote in 8 battleground states. And they’re trying to block the federal legislation that would make it easier to vote.

And the fascinating thing here is that you have dark money funding and organizing voter suppression. That’s the exact thing the For the People Act would stop!!

That’s why the For the People Act has money in politics and voting rights COMBINED because this is what we’re seeing. We are seeing an attack on voting rights that’s being organized and FUNDED by millions and millions of dollars in dark money.

So, these issues are connected. The only way to fix our democracy is to look at these issues holistically. And that’s why Conservatives and Republicans are so terrified of the For the People Act because they know it affects our democracy in the very ways that they’re trying to undermine it.”
